A Potential Haven for OHV Enthusiasts
One of the initial observations from a visitor suggests that Big Scrub Campground "looks like a good campground for ohv." This indicates that the campground may offer facilities and access suitable for off-highway vehicles such as ATVs, dirt bikes, or other similar recreational vehicles. For local users who enjoy the thrill of off-road adventures and are searching for "camping near me" with OHV trails or staging areas, Big Scrub Campground could be an ideal basecamp. The surrounding area of Umatilla and the Ocala National Forest is known for its extensive network of trails and unpaved roads, making it a popular destination for OHV riding. Camping at Big Scrub Campground could provide convenient access to these exciting opportunities.
However, it's important to note that the same reviewer mentioned that the campground was "not open when we were by there." This highlights the necessity of contacting the campground directly to confirm their operating status, seasonal hours, and any specific regulations regarding OHV use within the campground or the surrounding trails. Ensuring the campground is open and understanding their policies will be crucial for planning a successful OHV camping trip.
Proximity to the Region's Natural Springs
Another significant advantage of Big Scrub Campground, as noted by a visitor who "really enjoyed my time there," is its proximity to a wealth of natural springs. Central Florida is famous for its crystal-clear freshwater springs, which offer opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of these unique ecosystems. The reviewer specifically mentioned that "there's so many different springs close to this area," suggesting that Big Scrub Campground serves as a convenient gateway to exploring these natural wonders. After an exhilarating day of OHV riding (if applicable), campers can look forward to relaxing and cooling off in the refreshing waters of a nearby spring.
Some of the well-known springs in the vicinity of Umatilla and the Ocala National Forest include Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, and Silver Glen Springs, each offering its own unique charm and recreational activities. Camping at Big Scrub Campground could provide a cost-effective and convenient way to access and enjoy multiple springs in the area over several days.
Friendly Service at the Store
Adding to the positive aspects of Big Scrub Campground is the mention of friendly service encountered by a visitor at the campground store. The reviewer stated, "The people at the store was very friendly." This suggests that the campground has on-site facilities, likely including a store where campers can purchase essential supplies, snacks, or perhaps even obtain information about the area and local attractions. Friendly and helpful staff can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, making guests feel welcome and providing valuable assistance during their stay.
The Environment and Surrounding Area
While specific details about the immediate environment of Big Scrub Campground are limited in the provided reviews, its location in Umatilla, within close proximity to the Ocala National Forest, offers some insights. The Ocala National Forest is the second-largest nationally protected forest in the U.S. State of Florida, covering over 607 square miles. It is known for its diverse ecosystems, including pine scrub, sandhill, hardwood forests, and numerous lakes, rivers, and springs. Camping in this region provides ample opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities in addition to OHV riding and spring exploration.
The "Big Scrub" itself refers to a specific type of Florida scrub habitat characterized by low-growing vegetation adapted to sandy, nutrient-poor soils and periodic fires. This unique environment is home to a variety of plant and animal species, some of which are found nowhere else. Camping at Big Scrub Campground might offer a chance to experience this distinctive Florida landscape firsthand.

Looks like a good campground for ohv. Unfortunately it was not open when we were by there
Mar 04, 2025 · BNGI really enjoyed my time there. It was pretty cold when we were there. But there's so many different springs close to this area. The people at the store was very friendly.
Apr 30, 2025 · Susan ShepherdFirst come first serve for every site. Multiple bathhouses in excellent condition and well maintained. Campsites aren’t private and are out in the open, but great experience nonetheless. Groundskeepers are so friendly! Great trails for off-roading!!
Feb 14, 2021 · sydney flaniganHad a great time camping here. Bathrooms are clean and have plenty of warm water. The camp also has a dish washing station we found cool if we were to camp in a tent. The camp ground host were great people. Can’t wait to come out and camp again.
Apr 07, 2023 · Rider ShorterFound ourselves down a four wheeler trail and got stuck. Oops. But the area is beautiful and plenty of 4x4 trails to have fun on. But if the trucks small enough and you miss the marker you could ended up like us. Made it about 1000ft from the trailhead when we got stuck.
