Bloody Dick Cabin Introduce
Are you a local user in Montana searching for a unique "camping near me" experience that goes beyond traditional tent camping or RV parks? Consider Bloody Dick Cabin, a rustic rental cabin located near Jackson, MT 59736, USA. Managed by the US Forest Service (specifically the Dillon Ranger District), this cabin offers a more sheltered and amenity-rich alternative to primitive camping, providing a base for exploring the beautiful Montana wilderness. You can reach them at (406) 683-3900 or +1 406-683-3900 for booking inquiries and the most up-to-date information.
It's important to understand, as highlighted by a reviewer, that USFS cabins and lookouts typically offer a more rustic experience compared to commercial, for-profit rentals. Guests often rely on previous renters to have cleaned the cabin, and amenities can vary. A 5-star rating for a USFS cabin should be viewed through the lens of a "rustic cabin experience," which might equate to a 2 or 3-star rating for a standard commercial rental. With this in mind, Bloody Dick Cabin offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature with some basic comforts.
Recent updates indicate that the Dillon Ranger District has undertaken some much-needed maintenance and improvements at Bloody Dick Cabin as of June 2023. These positive changes address some of the concerns raised in earlier reviews and enhance the overall usability of the cabin. Noteworthy improvements include the replacement of the tarp ceiling with wood, repainting of the interior, ensuring the sink now drains properly, and cleaning the windows. Additionally, the USFS has provided screws in the cooking area and what appear to be new cooking items, along with a metal bucket and poker for the wood stove. These updates demonstrate a commitment to maintaining and improving the cabin for future renters.
Despite these improvements, some aspects of the cabin still require attention. As of the latest update, the propane oven remains non-functional, and one of the two propane lights is also not working. Additionally, while the ceiling has been addressed, there's still a suggestion that the floor could benefit from plywood being placed over it for easier cleaning due to cracks between the planks. It's also important to note that, as in previous years, the water supply to the cabin is typically turned off before September 30th, which was considered a discrepancy by a reviewer whose booking information suggested water would be available through September.
However, the reviewer who provided the update still rates their stay as 5 stars, indicating that the recent improvements significantly outweigh the remaining issues. They also commend the Dillon Ranger District for their helpfulness in resolving a separate issue, contrasting their positive experience with other ranger districts.
Looking back at earlier reviews provides further insight into the features and environment of Bloody Dick Cabin. The cabin is equipped with a two-unit propane light (though one is currently not working) and a 4-burner propane stove with an oven (the oven burner is noted as non-functional). A portable propane lantern is also available, but renters need to bring their own mantles and standard small camping propane fuel.
The cabin has a sink that drains outside, and typically water is available (though seasonal shut-offs occur). There are two bunk beds, but it's important to note that ladders are not provided, which could be a consideration for those with mobility issues needing to access the top bunk. A table with chairs is provided for dining and other activities, along with a wood stove for heating. Firewood is typically plentiful, making the wood stove a valuable amenity, especially during colder months.
The cooking situation includes "some good cooking items," and there are shelves and a storage unit for organizing belongings. Outside, there is a non-ADA pit toilet with a privacy screen, a fire pit with benches for enjoying outdoor fires, but no picnic table is mentioned. For those interested in hiking, a 4-mile trail behind the cabin leads to the Idaho border, offering opportunities for exploration and enjoying the surrounding wilderness.
Connectivity is limited in the area. The last reliable Verizon signal noted was 3 bar 3G in Grant, MT, and a stronger 4 bar 4G signal was found about 2 miles from I-15. This remoteness contributes to the cabin's appeal for those seeking a true escape but also means limited communication options.
A practical tip for summer visitors is to bring fly traps. The cabin also has an "OK size porch" and partial curtains over some windows, but complete privacy might be limited. A locked gate provides some sense of privacy, although hunters have been known to drive up behind the cabin.
An older review from September 2021 mentioned a price increase from $20 to $55 per night, plus an $8 fee. This significant price change was a point of concern for the reviewer at the time, especially given the cabin's condition. However, with the recent renovations, the increased fee might now be more justifiable for the improved experience.
In summary, Bloody Dick Cabin offers a rustic and remote "camping near me" experience in the beautiful Montana wilderness near Jackson. Recent improvements by the Dillon Ranger District have addressed some key maintenance issues, making it a more comfortable stay. Key features include a wood stove, propane stove (oven non-functional), propane lights (one non-functional), bunk beds, a table and chairs, a sink with drainage, a pit toilet, a fire pit, and access to a hiking trail. While some minor issues remain, the overall experience, particularly with the recent upgrades, seems to be positive for those seeking a traditional and somewhat primitive cabin stay. Contact the Dillon Ranger District at (406) 683-3900 to inquire about availability, current pricing, and any further updates on the cabin's condition. Be prepared for a rustic experience and the beauty of Montana's backcountry.

Bloody Dick Cabin Reviews
UPDATE from our August 25 stay:Updated review since our last two stays. Thank you Dillon Ranger District for redoing the cabin on June 23!The tarp ceiling was replaced with wood, interior repainted, sink now drains, windows cleaned and other misc cleaning done. They also put screws in the cooking area with what appears to be new cooking items. Also there now is a metal bucket and poker to use with the wood stove. We are still rating this as a 5 star stay even though the propane oven still does not work, one propane light does not work and we still think the floor needs plywood placed over it for easier cleaning. Also they cut the water off as last year before September 30. The improvements are enough that we think it overcomes the still needed repairs.A big shout out to the Dillon Ranger District for helping us with an issue we had. We wish the Butte Ranger District was as nice and helpful as you!UPDATE from our May 16, 2022 stay:For this stay we have upgraded our review from 3 to 4 stars as the broken windows have been replaced. On top of this we were told by some nice USFS employees that stopped by that this cabin was to be blocked off from rentals for an entire week to have the ceiling fixed, floor possibly replaced and various other maintenance and rebuilding done!Funny. Last time we did not try the radio but this time we did and the only AM or FM station we could get was 550 AM. That shows how remote you are.September 22, 2021 review:USFS cabins and lookouts are not comparable to commercial for profit rentals. You are relying on previous renters to clean the cabin before you arrive which sometimes does not happen. Our star review is based upon a rustic cabin experience and some cabins have electricity, propane or just a wood stove. A 5 star for a USFS cabin or lookout could equal a 2 or 3 star review to a regular for profit cabin.PRICE INCREASE! Going from $20 a night to $55 plus $8 fee.The good:Two unit propane light with 4 burner propane stove & oven although oven burner would not work.Portable propane lantern but needs mantles. Uses standard small camping propane fuel.Has sink that drains outside & water although water already turned off for winter on our Sept 22 stay. Site says water through September. FALSE.2 bunk beds but no ladders if you are not physically able to raise yourself.Table with chairs.Wood stove. Some good cooking items.Shelves & storage unit.Lots of wood.Nice non ADA pit toilet with privacy screen.Fire pit with benches but no picnic table.4 mile trail in back of cabin to Idaho border.Last Verizon signal on way to cabin was 3 bar 3G in Grant MT & 4 bar 4G about 2 miles from I-15.Bring fly traps during summer.OK size porch.Partial curtains supplied over a couple of windows but not really private.Locked gate for privacy but hunters were driving up behind the cabin. The bad:We put 3 stars as this unit is not being maintained & due to the new pricing. The pit toilet was nice & the exterior of the cabin was nicely painted. However the front door was covered with wood due to 2 windows being busted out & the window over the sink was broken as well due to previous renters. A journal entry was made saying they were measured at the first of September by the USFS for replacement. Hopefully that takes place. The sink needs to be replaced and over half the ceiling was gone and was covered with a blue tarp. The floor also needs to be painted or even better plywood to cover it all so sweeping is easier due to deep cracks between planks. We hope that the USFS will be using the higher fee to specifically repair this little cabin as it deserves it. While we know USFS cabins are mostly primitive this unit has fallen below the standard when compared to other units.Rent now at $20 to save but not at $55 if repairs are not done. An hour drive from I-15 has to be worth it!
Oct 20, 2022 · Tripper DudesThe cabin is nice, plenty of firewood and a sweet put for fires. Has a propane range and wood stove inside too.
