The campground's history, as noted by a long-time visitor who remembers it as Goynes' Canoe Livery since the 1980s, speaks to its established presence and connection to river recreation in the area. This legacy suggests a deep understanding of the river environment and the needs of those who come to enjoy it.
One review highlights the beautiful location of Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground directly on the river. While the reviewer hadn't personally stayed at the campground, they mentioned that it "looks nice," indicating that the camping facilities are likely well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing. This positive initial impression from someone familiar with the location for boating suggests that the campground offers a welcoming environment for overnight stays.
Another reviewer shared a positive first-time experience renting kayaks from Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground. They specifically praised the owner for being "very accommodating and very welcoming," which underscores the friendly and helpful service provided. This personal touch can significantly enhance a visitor's experience, especially for those new to river activities. The seamless rental process, facilitated by the owner, made it easy for a beginner to get out on the water quickly and confidently.
The reviewer provided valuable details about the kayaking trip, noting that it cost $35 per kayak and covered a distance of approximately 3 miles. This information is crucial for local users planning a visit and considering renting equipment. The duration of the trip suggests a leisurely paddle that allows for ample time to enjoy the scenery and the river environment. The strong emphasis to "BRING LOTS OF WATER!!!!" is a practical tip for anyone venturing out on the San Marcos River, especially during warmer months, highlighting the importance of staying hydrated during outdoor activities.
The kayaking experience itself was described as "excellent for beginners," which is a significant draw for those who are new to the sport or looking for a gentle introduction to paddling. The presence of "a few baby rapids in the beginning" adds a touch of mild excitement without being overly challenging, leading to "smooth sailing from there." This combination of gentle rapids and calm stretches makes the San Marcos River accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of skill levels. The unexpected sighting of "some cows along the river" adds a touch of local charm and highlights the natural environment surrounding the waterway.
Based on these reviews and the campground's name, the "environment" of Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground is clearly defined by its location on the San Marcos River. Expect a riparian environment with trees lining the banks, providing shade for both the campground and the river. The river itself will be the central feature, offering clear flowing water and opportunities to observe local flora and fauna. The "shady grove" part of the name suggests that the campground itself benefits from mature trees, creating a cooler and more comfortable camping experience, especially during the hot Texas summers. The surrounding area is likely to be rural, offering a peaceful and natural setting away from urban congestion.
The "services" offered at Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground include, at a minimum, canoe and kayak rentals, as indicated by the reviews. The welcoming and accommodating owner suggests that guest service is a priority. While specific details about camping amenities are limited in the reviews, we can infer that they likely include designated campsites for tents, and possibly RVs. Given the mention of a "nice looking" campground, it's reasonable to expect basic facilities such as restrooms and possibly showers. Access to potable water and trash disposal are also likely. The primary service beyond camping appears to be facilitating access to and enjoyment of the San Marcos River through boat rentals and potentially guidance on river trips.
The key "features" of Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground are its direct access to the San Marcos River, the availability of canoe and kayak rentals on-site, and its suitability for beginner paddlers. The beautiful river location and the shady environment of the campground are also significant features that enhance the overall experience. The friendly and accommodating owner and staff contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. The 3-mile kayaking trip offers a manageable and enjoyable adventure for a reasonable price. The gentle nature of the river in this section, with mild rapids at the start, makes it ideal for those new to kayaking. The potential for wildlife sightings along the river adds an element of natural discovery.
For "promotional information" aimed at local users searching "camping near me," Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground can highlight its prime location on the beautiful San Marcos River, its convenient and affordable canoe and kayak rentals, and its welcoming atmosphere for both experienced boaters and beginners. Emphasizing the scenic beauty of the river and the shady comfort of the campground would be beneficial. The fact that the river in this area is well-suited for families and those new to kayaking is a significant selling point. Promoting the 3-mile paddling trip as a relaxing and enjoyable way to experience the river, with potential wildlife sightings, could attract many visitors. The campground's long-standing reputation in the area, dating back to its days as Goynes' Canoe Livery, adds a sense of reliability and local history. Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground Reviews
I love this place and have been coming to boat the San Marcos since the 1980's when it was Goynes' Canoe Livery. Its a beautiful location on the river and the campground looks nice even though I havent stayed there.
Jan 23, 2025 · Steve TakataThe owner was very accommodating and very welcoming! It was my first time visiting and wasnt sure how to go about renting kayaks but he made the process seemless! I paid $35 per kayak and the trip itself is about 3 miles long give or take. I cannot emphasize this enough: BRING LOTS OF WATER!!!! Since it was my first time, I didnt realize how long the trip was but I warned you! It is excellent for beginners. It has a few baby rapids in the begining but is smooth sailing from there! We saw some cows along the river too!
Jun 11, 2024 · Angel BeltranI normally don't get upset over places. There are not alot of places to camp on the river in San marcos. I called in and the campsite sounded perfect for us until they said no "aggressive breeds". I have a Doberman and a German Shepard that will just about lick you to death.. I have never came across this issue with my babies.. I felt insulted. I know it's just thier rules and that's fine. I wish this terrible stigma will change. Aggression is MADE not born..
Aug 21, 2024 · Nicole FosterThanks to Spencer Canoes & Shady Grove Campground for offering free of charge accommodations for everyone who participated in the river cleanup last weekend! They are just off the river, have restrooms and warm showers which is always appreciated when you have been paddling all day.Great place for camping and canoeing. They also offer canoe rentals.
Mar 06, 2023 · Jim ParkerJack was very very nice and helpful! I spoke to him on the phone and in person a few times to get information on their place and fees since they don’t have a website. He was very kind and friendly. The river was running slow so it took us 4 hrs with paddling the majority of the way. $35 for single kayaks and I think $70 for tandem. Camping and restrooms were temporarily closed due to COVID but it would be a nice quiet place one it’s fully open. Great location and lots of shade. This is not a fancy 5star commercial location. It’s a mom n pop (actually mom n son) place that is convenient with nice people.
