Bowman Lake Campground Introduce
Are you a local resident of Montana or the surrounding region searching for a breathtaking "camping near me" experience, particularly if you enjoy tent camping? Look no further than Bowman Lake Campground, located in West Glacier, MT 59936, USA. This campground has received high praise from visitors for its stunning natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere, especially for those who prefer tent camping. While RV access is strongly discouraged by at least one reviewer, the allure for tent campers and even day visitors seems undeniable.
Environment and Location: Absolutely Beautiful Lakeside Setting
Multiple reviewers describe Bowman Lake Campground and Bowman Lake itself as "absolutely beautiful" and "gorgeous." Even with the presence of smoke from nearby fires, one visitor who went up for the evening to see the sunset still found it "absolutely gorgeous," highlighting the inherent beauty of the location. The campground is situated by Bowman Lake, offering campers and visitors access to its extremely peaceful waters. The lake's tranquility was specifically noted, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a serene natural environment. One reviewer wished they had a paddleboard to fully experience the lake, further indicating its calm and inviting waters.
The journey to Bowman Lake is also part of the experience. The road leading to the campground is described as a single lane, narrow, dirt road that is "windy as hell." While this might be a bit of a challenge for some drivers, especially those not accustomed to mountain roads, others from mountainous areas would likely find it manageable. It's advised to start navigation prior to losing cell service or to download offline maps, as the route from the park entrance can be a little unusual, passing through some private residential areas if entering from the west gate of the park first. Despite the road conditions, many seem to agree that the destination is well worth the trek.
Services and Amenities: Focused on a Natural Experience
While the reviews don't extensively detail the services and amenities of Bowman Lake Campground, the strong recommendation for tent camping and the warning against bringing an RV suggest a more rustic camping experience. Typically, such campgrounds in scenic natural areas offer basic amenities like tent sites, perhaps with picnic tables and fire rings. Restroom facilities are usually available, though the type (e.g., vault toilets vs. flush toilets) is not mentioned in the provided reviews.
The easy and plentiful parking mentioned by one visitor who went to see the sunset suggests that day visitors are also accommodated, at least in terms of parking. However, the focus of the positive feedback is primarily on the beauty of the lake and the suitability for tent camping, implying that the main draw is the natural environment rather than extensive campground amenities.
Given the recommendation against RVs, it's likely that the campsites are more geared towards tents and may not easily accommodate larger vehicles or offer extensive RV hookups. Local users specifically looking for "camping near me" for tenting will likely find the setup more appealing.
Features: Stunning Lake Views and Peaceful Tent Camping
The standout features of Bowman Lake Campground are undoubtedly the "absolutely beautiful" Bowman Lake and the peaceful atmosphere that seems to pervade the area. The lake's clear and calm waters are ideal for enjoying the scenery and potentially for non-motorized water activities (though this is inferred rather than explicitly stated). The fact that one reviewer highly recommends at least stopping by the lake, even if not camping, speaks to its significant appeal.
For tent campers, the campground is described as "absolutely delightful," suggesting well-situated tent sites that allow for an immersive experience in this beautiful setting. The more challenging access road might also be seen as a feature by some, as it likely contributes to the more remote and less crowded feel of the area, especially once you arrive at the peaceful lake.
The easy parking for day visitors also makes it a great option for locals who might just want to spend an evening by the lake to enjoy the sunset and the tranquility. The combination of stunning natural beauty and a peaceful environment makes Bowman Lake Campground a highly recommended "camping near me" destination, particularly for tent campers willing to navigate the access road.

Bowman Lake Campground Reviews
There is zero chance I'd take my RV to this campground, but it is an absolutely delightful place to visit and tent camp. I highly recommend making the trek. The road had more traffic than expected for a week day in September, but make an adventure of it.
Oct 11, 2024 · Camp CatsAbsolutely beautiful campground!I went up for the evening to check out the lake for sunset. As you can tell in the photos, the smoke from the fires was pretty intense but it was still absolutely gorgeous.Parking was easy and plentiful. The lake was extremely peaceful. I wish I had a paddleboard to be able to go out onto the water to get the full experience.Note that the single road up to the campsite is narrow, dirt, and windy as hell. If you're from south florida, be ready for a bit of a challenge if you're a nervous driver. If you're from mountainess areas, you'll be fine. Be sure to start your navigation PRIOR to losing service or download offline maps as the road from the park in is a little strange since it cuts through some private residential areas if you enter from the west gate of the park first.14/10 recommend at least stopping by lake Bowman.
Sep 04, 2023 · Ryan DavisThe views here are top tier! Very highly recommended even if you spend 5 minutes soaking up the view after a short walk from the parking lot. There is one disabled/handicapped parking spot near the lake so everyone can see the view. I did not experience any bugs/mosquitoes except for seeing a few tiny houseflies and an occasional butterfly. You won’t be disappointed.
Sep 16, 2021 · Tim HaightGreat place in Glacier NP to camp and spend time! The lake is super nice and perfect for paddling or swimming. Campground is well maintained and a bit out of the way so it's less busy than the main Glacier campgrounds. There were still a few spots open on a Saturday night in mid July. The road to get there is somewhat bumpy but pretty good compared to most forest service roads.
Jul 25, 2023 · Tim WickBeautiful. One of my new favorites in glacier. Rough road to get there, 6 miles of bumps, dust, tight tree lines, switchbacks, hills, and potholes. Wish I would have brought a kayake or something because this lake is just gorgeous. Consult the visitors center before choosing a hike because oh my God we made a mistake by taking a "short" 6 mile hike that was extremely strenuous. Pit toulets available. Water pumps throughout. 2 tents per campsite. Ranger station very close and were present during waking hours. Bring your own firewood as gathering is not permitted here.
