Quartz Lake Campground Introduce
For local users in the West Glacier, Montana area and those seeking 'camping near me' with the allure of pristine lake views and access to the wilderness, Quartz Lake Campground, located in West Glacier, MT 59936, USA, presents a destination with both significant natural beauty and some important considerations for potential visitors. You can reach them at (406) 888-7895 or +1 406-888-7895 for inquiries, although specific details about reservations and accessibility based on the reviews are limited.
One of the most prominent features of Quartz Lake Campground, as highlighted by a reviewer, is the "beautiful view right on the beach." This suggests a picturesque setting directly adjacent to Quartz Lake, offering campers the opportunity to enjoy waterfront scenery and potentially engage in lakeside activities. The allure of waking up to or relaxing by a beautiful lake is a significant draw for many seeking a natural camping experience within the 'camping near me' category.
The campground also offers a loop trail for hikers. One reviewer who experienced this loop recommended taking the "south to north route." This suggests that the direction of travel can impact the hiking experience, possibly due to terrain, views, or other factors. For local users who enjoy hiking as part of their camping trip, the presence of a loop trail around Quartz Lake is a notable feature, offering opportunities for exploration and exercise.
However, it is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of some significant drawbacks reported by a camper who stayed in late June of 2018. This reviewer described the insect situation as "very bad," specifically mentioning mosquitoes that were biting through multiple layers of clothing. The swarms were reportedly intense, making stopping during the hike in particularly unpleasant. This suggests that during certain times of the year, particularly late spring and early summer, insect repellent, netting, and protective clothing are essential for a visit to Quartz Lake Campground.
Another critical piece of information from the same reviewer is the restriction on building fires. It is stated that "it's illegal to build a fire and there are no fire pits either." This is a significant consideration for many campers, as campfires often play a central role in the camping experience for cooking, warmth, and ambiance. The absence of fire pits and the prohibition of fires mean that campers will need to rely on alternative methods for cooking (such as camp stoves) and should be prepared for potentially cooler evenings without the warmth of a fire. This regulation is likely in place to protect the natural environment and reduce the risk of wildfires.
The same reviewer also described the hike into the campground as "very brutal," characterized by a "narrow track" that was "uneven." This suggests that accessing the campsites may involve a challenging hike, requiring a certain level of physical fitness and appropriate footwear. The intense mosquito activity further compounded the difficulty of the hike. This information is particularly important for local users considering camping at Quartz Lake Campground, as the accessibility of the sites may be a significant factor in their decision.
Despite the negative aspects, the reviewer did acknowledge that "the views were nice." This reinforces the earlier point about the scenic beauty of the location. However, the overall experience for this camper was significantly marred by the severe mosquito problem, even with precautions like layers of clothing, a bug net, and bug spray. The reviewer concluded that they "would not repeat this hike," indicating a strongly negative experience due to the insects and the challenging trail.
Considering Quartz Lake Campground within the 'camping near me' category, local users should weigh the following features and drawbacks:
Beautiful Lake Views: The campground offers scenic views right on Quartz Lake.
Hiking Opportunities: A loop trail around the lake is available for hiking.
However, significant drawbacks include:
Severe Insect Problems: Particularly in late June (and potentially other times of the year), mosquitoes can be extremely aggressive and abundant.
No Campfires Allowed: Building fires is illegal, and no fire pits are provided, impacting cooking and warmth options.
Brutal Hike In: Accessing the campground involves a challenging hike on a narrow and uneven trail.
Information regarding specific services and amenities at Quartz Lake Campground is limited in the provided reviews. Details about restrooms, water availability, designated campsites, or permit requirements are not mentioned. Local users will need to seek this information through other channels, such as the managing agency (likely associated with Glacier National Park or the National Forest Service) or by contacting the provided phone number.
Similarly, no promotional information is included in the reviews. Any potential fees, reservation procedures, or special offers would need to be obtained from official sources. Given its location near West Glacier, it's possible that fees associated with National Park or Forest Service campgrounds may apply.
In conclusion, Quartz Lake Campground near West Glacier, Montana, offers the allure of beautiful lake views and a hiking trail. However, potential local users considering this 'camping near me' option must be prepared for potentially severe insect problems, especially during certain times of the year, and the strict prohibition of campfires. The challenging hike in to the campground is another significant factor to consider regarding accessibility. While the scenery may be rewarding, the overall experience, as described by at least one visitor, can be quite difficult due to these factors. It is highly recommended that local users conduct further research regarding current conditions (especially insect activity), regulations, required permits, and available amenities before planning a trip to Quartz Lake Campground. Contacting the provided phone number or checking with the relevant land management agency would be crucial steps in this research process.

Quartz Lake Campground Reviews
I was here in late June of 2018. The bugs were very bad. Mosquitos were biting me through several layers of clothes. It's illegal to build a fire and there are no fire pits either. The hike in was very brutal, narrow track, uneven and the mosquitos swarm you if you stop for even a second. I would not repeat this hike. The views were nice but even with layers of clothes, a bug net, and bug spray the mosquitos really made this one a rough journey.
