Bretz Mill Campground Introduce
Are you in search of a tranquil and secluded "Camping Near Me" destination in the picturesque landscapes surrounding Shaver Lake, California? Consider Bretz Mill Campground, a unique camping area nestled within the Blue Canyon Mountains, near Tollhouse and Shaver Lake (address: Shaver Lake, CA 93664, USA). This campground offers a distinct camping experience characterized by its remote location, first-come-first-serve policy, and proximity to a shallow creek, making it particularly appealing for families.
One of the defining features of Bretz Mill Campground is its "Very remote location." For those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a deeper immersion into nature, this remoteness is a significant draw. It promises a quieter and potentially less crowded camping experience compared to more easily accessible campgrounds.
Adding to its unique character is the "First come, first serve" policy. This means that unlike many campgrounds that require advance reservations, Bretz Mill operates on a non-reservation basis. While this requires a bit more spontaneity and perhaps arriving earlier to secure a spot, it also eliminates the often complex process of booking campsites and associated "No reservation fees" are a welcome bonus for budget-conscious campers.
The campground's proximity to a creek is another major highlight, especially for families with young children. The reviewer specifically noted, "Near the creek. Its very shallow so our children can enjoy the stream, within eye-distance, worry-free." This provides a safe and enjoyable natural play area for kids, allowing them to splash and explore the water under the watchful eyes of their parents. The peace of mind offered by the shallow waters makes Bretz Mill Campground an attractive option for family camping.
Bretz Mill Campground is identified as "a part of the Blue Canyon Mountains near Tollhouse and Shaver Lake, CA." This location suggests a setting of natural beauty, likely surrounded by trees, and potentially offering scenic views and opportunities for exploring the mountainous terrain. The mention of being near both Tollhouse and Shaver Lake indicates that while the campground itself is remote, it might still be within a reasonable driving distance of these areas for supplies or other amenities if needed.
The information provided also includes specific driving directions, highlighting the journey to Bretz Mill Campground as a potentially scenic experience. One route mentioned is "from Trimmer Springs Rd behind Pine Flat Dam take Big Creek Rd at the first green bridge." However, it's important to note that this route involves driving on a "gravel/sand" road. This information is crucial for potential visitors as it suggests that vehicles should be suitable for unpaved road conditions and that the drive might be slower or require more caution.
An alternative and potentially "easier" route is described as driving to "Hwy 168 CA and turn right on Tollhouse Rd at the (Tollhouse lookout)." This suggests a more conventional paved road leading to the vicinity of the campground. It would be advisable for prospective campers to consider their vehicle type and comfort level with unpaved roads when choosing the best route to Bretz Mill Campground.
The combination of its remote location, the absence of reservation fees, the family-friendly shallow creek, and its setting within the Blue Canyon Mountains near Shaver Lake makes Bretz Mill Campground a unique option for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path "Camping Near Me" experience. While the first-come-first-serve policy requires flexibility and the gravel road on one route necessitates appropriate vehicle considerations, the rewards of a peaceful natural setting and a safe creek for children can be significant.
For local users in the Shaver Lake and surrounding areas, Bretz Mill Campground offers an opportunity to escape to a less crowded and more natural environment without the added cost or complexity of reservation systems. The shallow creek is a particularly attractive feature for families with young children looking for a safe way to enjoy the water. The remoteness ensures a quieter camping experience, allowing for a deeper connection with nature.
However, potential visitors should be prepared for the first-come-first-serve nature of the campground and consider the road conditions when planning their journey. It might be beneficial to check local online forums or social media groups for recent reports on campsite availability, especially during peak seasons. Additionally, ensuring your vehicle is suitable for gravel or sandy roads, if opting for the Big Creek Rd route, is essential for a safe and comfortable trip.

Jul 16, 2024 · JackA bit of a drive to get through, but this campground is wonderful. It's very well maintained, has benches, toilets and fire rings, and sits right next to Big Creek.Blue Canyon Work Center sits just a little to the North of it, though it's mostly out of view, so help is never too far away. This area is a funny mixture between remote and note, as it's not crazy hard to get to, it just takes a bit of effort and patience. There are plenty of trees to provide shade and overall, the campground is clean.
Jun 21, 2023 · James LeOur church has a yearly event where the men and boys go up and camp overnight. This campsite is always very well maintained, with plenty of locations to choose from. Big Creek runs alongside the camp, so fishing is not a struggle to find. They have well maintained outhouses as well
