Brown's Owens River Campground Introduce
For those actively searching for "Camping Near Me" in the picturesque Eastern Sierra region of California, Brown's Owens River Campground stands out as a destination particularly favored by anglers and nature enthusiasts. Located at 6766 Benton Crossing Rd, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA, this private campground offers a blend of accessibility and natural beauty, situated directly on the renowned Upper Owens River. For inquiries, you can reach them at (760) 920-0975 or via mobile at +1 760-920-0975.
Environment and Setting:
Brown's Owens River Campground is nestled in a high-desert meadow, offering panoramic views of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. The most prominent feature of its environment is its direct adjacency to the Upper Owens River, making it an ideal location for fly, lure, and bait fishing. The campground is situated in an open, expansive landscape, which while offering breathtaking vistas and spectacular nightly sunsets, means there is limited natural shade from trees at individual campsites. This open setting, however, is excellent for stargazing and provides ample space between sites, preventing the "wall-to-wall RVs" feeling found in some other parks.
While the overall scenery is consistently praised as beautiful, some specific site conditions can vary. For instance, one customer review noted an issue with "a ton of nails right where you would park your truck and RV" at site #20, indicating that while generally well-maintained, attention to detail at individual sites might sometimes be inconsistent. The general impression is of a clean park, with reports of clean bathrooms and showers, even if the "outhouses" in some descriptions might suggest a more rustic feel for certain facilities. The elevation of the area, approximately 7,000 feet above sea level, means that while days can be warm and sunny, nights can be chilly, and strong winds are possible, particularly in the afternoons.
Services and Amenities:
Brown's Owens River Campground offers a range of services and amenities designed to enhance the camping experience, particularly for those focused on fishing and outdoor recreation:
- RV and Tent Sites: The campground provides over 80 sites accommodating both RVs and tents. These are generally described as spacious, offering plenty of room for vehicles, tents, and personal outdoor setups.
- No Hookups (Generally): A significant point noted in customer reviews is the absence of full hookups (water, sewer, electric) at the sites. This makes it primarily a "dry camping" experience for RVs, requiring campers to be self-sufficient with water and power, often relying on generators during permissible hours. There is no dump station directly on the property, which is another factor for RVers to consider regarding waste management.
- Hot Showers and Laundry: Despite the lack of hookups at sites, the campground provides hot showers (available for Owens River Campground guests only) and coin-operated laundry facilities, which are essential conveniences for longer stays in a rustic setting. These facilities are often praised for their cleanliness.
- Camp Store and Cafe: An on-site general store is available, stocked with essential items such as drinks, ice cream, ice, fishing tackle, and wood. Some reviews mention a cafe, implying options for hot food or snacks. The staff at the general store are described as friendly.
- Fire Pits: Fire pits are available at sites, allowing for campfires (subject to local fire regulations and restrictions). Firewood is sold on-site.
- Recreational Activities: The campground is a haven for fishing enthusiasts, with easy access to the Upper Owens River for various types of fishing. Beyond fishing, the area offers opportunities for swimming (in nearby holes or the river), mountain biking, off-roading, hiking, and even kite flying due to the open spaces. It is centrally located to popular fishing spots like Crowley Lake and Convict Lake, and relatively close to Mammoth Mountain for other outdoor pursuits.
- Handicapped Facilities: The campground is noted to have handicapped facilities, indicating an effort to be accessible.
- RV Storage: RV storage is also listed as a facility, providing a potential benefit for seasonal visitors or those needing long-term parking.
Features and Distinctive Aspects:
The standout feature of Brown's Owens River Campground is its prime location along the Upper Owens River, making it a "fisherman's paradise." The consistent presence of the river, even during drought conditions, ensures reliable fishing opportunities. The wide-open spaces and stunning Sierra Nevada backdrop offer a quintessential high-desert camping experience, distinguishing it from more forested campgrounds. The relatively large size of the sites provides a sense of privacy and space, which is highly valued by many campers. The blend of a rustic outdoor experience with essential conveniences like hot showers and a well-stocked store makes it appealing to a broad range of campers, from hardcore anglers to families seeking a natural retreat.
However, the lack of site-specific hookups and a dump station on-site is a significant characteristic that potential visitors, especially RVers, must consider. This defines it more as a traditional camping experience where self-sufficiency is key. The affordability, with reported riverfront sites at $40.00 +TOT and other sites at $35.00 +TOT, may be appealing for those seeking a value-oriented camping experience, though some past reviews found these prices high given the lack of hookups.
Promotional Information and Guest Experiences:
Brown's Owens River Campground is largely promoted through its reputation as a premier fishing destination and its scenic location. Its official website highlights it as "a fisherman's paradise" with "unequaled fly, lure and bait fishing just steps from your campsite." The "panoramic views and breathtaking Sierra sunsets" are also key selling points. It's positioned as a place for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a memorable experience in the Eastern Sierra.
Guest reviews generally corroborate these promotional aspects, emphasizing the beautiful scenery and the excellent fishing. Campers often praise the spacious sites and the cleanliness of the shared facilities like bathrooms and showers. The friendliness of the staff at the general store is also a recurring positive comment. While some visitors have expressed concerns about the pricing relative to the lack of hookups, and isolated issues like nails at a campsite have been reported, the overall sentiment leans positive for those who appreciate a more traditional camping experience focused on outdoor activities and natural beauty. The ability to float down the river and constant swimming opportunities for dogs are also highlighted as enjoyable features, indicating a strong connection to the river as a recreational hub. It's a place where many families return annually, reinforcing its appeal as a peaceful and activity-rich destination.

Brown's Owens River Campground Reviews
The campground is OK. I feel like the prices are kind of high for not having any hookups at the sites or even a dump station on the property. Our site, #20, had a ton of nails right where you would park your truck and rv. Not very happy about that... But the ladies at the general store were friendly and it was a nice store with drinks and ice cream.
May 08, 2025 · RachelFantastic private campground on the river. Tons of fun floating down the river with friends. Beautiful scenery, our dog loved going swimming constantly.
Apr 03, 2025 · Rudy von RavensbergDry camp, wide open, beautiful view of mountains around you. It's mostly RV and fishing by Owens River. The shower and restrooms are clean. Kelly at the check-in was very helpful. Expect generators in the daytime and ATVs. Reminder to outdoorsy dog owners, please pick up your dog poop and don't let them poop in vacant sites. Be a responsible pet owner. No shade and flat. There is no dump station here. Enjoy your stay.
Sep 21, 2024 · Maria E LopezWhat an escape! While we didn't fish, it looks like everyone else was having fun fishing. My only complaint is for a place with. I hookups, I thought it was a little steep on price. Still, we'd go back just for the views and remoteness. Thankfully, there weren't many people in the area.
