Based on the feedback from previous renters, we can compile an objective overview of the environment, services, and features of this camping cabin to help local users decide if it's the right fit for their next "camping near me" adventure.
Environment: Natural Montana Beauty with Wildlife
The Bull River Guard Station is situated in a natural environment where wildlife, particularly bears, are present. One reviewer cautioned about bears being attracted to the berries and apples in the area, noting that they were seen sleeping near the cabin nightly. This highlights the importance of being bear-aware while staying here. The surrounding area, being part of the Cabinet Ranger District, likely offers the scenic beauty typical of western Montana, with potential for hiking and exploring the outdoors.
Another reviewer described the location as providing "no phone service," which could be seen as a downside for those needing to stay connected but a bonus for those seeking a digital detox and immersion in nature. The presence of a bat living upstairs, which helps control the insect population, is an interesting natural element of the cabin experience.
As a historic site, the environment around the Bull River Guard Station carries a sense of the past, adding a unique dimension to the stay.
Services and Amenities: Basic Comforts Provided
According to one review, the cabin is "completely stocked with all amenities," including a coffee pot. However, renters need to bring their own blankets and water. This suggests that while the cabin offers essential items for a comfortable stay, some personal provisions are necessary.
Regarding furniture, one reviewer found it "not that comfortable" overall but noted that the bed downstairs was nice. This is something to consider for those who prioritize comfort indoors.
A notable downside mentioned was that the "outhouse smelt terrible." This is an important piece of information for prospective renters to be aware of regarding the sanitation facilities.
Features: Historic Charm, Wildlife Encounters, and Potential Visitors
The unique features of the Bull River Guard Station include:
- Historic Site: Being a historic guard station adds a special character to the rental experience. However, this also means that "people will stop by to check the place out" while you are renting it. Renters should be prepared for potential visitors who may even ask to look around inside, with the decision to allow them being entirely up to the renter.
- Wildlife Presence: The area is home to bears, requiring vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines. The presence of a bat upstairs for insect control is another natural feature.
- Basic Amenities Provided: Including a coffee pot, but requiring guests to bring blankets and water.
- Downstairs Bed: Noted as being comfortable.
- Lack of Phone Service: Offering a chance to disconnect.
The combination of its historical significance and natural setting makes the Bull River Guard Station a distinctive choice for "camping near me."

Bull River Guard Station Reviews
Nice little Guard Station to rend from the US government. Watch out for bears they love all the berries and apples in the area. We had them sleeping near the cabin every night we were there. The furniture was not that comfortable but the bed downstairs was nice. There is a bat living upstairs that keeps the insect population to a minimum.Be aware that since its a historic site people will stop by to check the place out while you are renting it. You don't need to interact with them but they may ask to come in and look around. Its up to you if you let them or not.
