Campground: Forlorn Lakes

Trout Lake, WA 98650, USA

4.0
It was a cute place, very tranquil for sure. Unfortunately we ended up camping at one of the smaller lakes instead of a bigger one, and the views weren’t as pretty as some of the other pictures I seen. Lots of flying beetles and mosquitoes that wouldn’t leave us alone, and leeches in the lake that kept sticking to our poor dogs. The bathroom near our site (site 2) was absolutely disgusting with stains everywhere, a horrible smell, and lots of flies. But, it is a vault toilet, so what are you gonna do. Luckily we brought our own portable toilet so didn’t need to use it. It was definitely an okay place to camp, just don’t know if I’d wanna go here again. I think I’m just someone more interested in camping where theres running water, like at a river! - Julia

Campground: Forlorn Lakes Introduce

For local users in Washington State and beyond searching for "camping near me," Campground: Forlorn Lakes, located in Trout Lake, WA 98650, presents a unique option characterized by tranquility, exceptional stargazing, and a remote wilderness setting. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground offers a blend of natural beauty and potential challenges that prospective campers should be aware of.

The environment of Forlorn Lakes Campground is described as "cute" and "very tranquil," appealing to those seeking a peaceful escape. The name itself suggests a secluded location, and one reviewer confirms its remoteness, emphasizing the darkness and quiet at night. This makes it particularly attractive for stargazers, with the stars reportedly reflecting in the water due to the minimal light pollution. While occasional light from other campers might be present, the overall atmosphere is conducive to observing the night sky. However, one camper noted that the views might vary depending on the specific lake accessed, as the campground encompasses multiple lakes of different sizes and scenic qualities.

Despite the tranquility, some environmental aspects might pose challenges. One reviewer mentioned a significant presence of "flying beetles and mosquitoes that wouldn’t leave us alone," indicating that insect repellent is likely a necessity. Additionally, leeches were reported in at least one of the lakes, sticking to dogs that entered the water, which is a crucial consideration for pet owners. These factors suggest that while the setting is natural and serene, campers should come prepared for potential encounters with insects and aquatic life.

The services and facilities at Forlorn Lakes Campground appear to be basic, consistent with a more remote camping experience. One reviewer described the bathroom near their site (site 2) as "absolutely disgusting" with stains, a horrible smell, and numerous flies, noting that it was a vault toilet. While acknowledging the nature of vault toilets, the description suggests that the maintenance of these facilities might be subpar. The fact that this camper brought their own portable toilet underscores the potential need for self-sufficiency regarding sanitation. Conversely, another reviewer noted the availability of fire pits and picnic tables at most campsites they observed, which are standard and welcome amenities for any camping experience. The campground also seems to offer wide camp areas capable of accommodating large or multiple tents, depending on the site.

Wildlife encounters are a notable feature of Forlorn Lakes Campground, adding to the wilderness experience but also requiring caution. One reviewer mentioned occasional sightings of bears or dark-colored cougars and advised maintaining a clean camp as a preventative measure. They also recommended carrying bear spray and an air horn as precautions. Another reviewer corroborated the presence of a dark cougar seen in broad daylight near a restroom, emphasizing the need to be prepared for the unexpected encounters with wildlife that can occur in a remote forest setting.

Adding an unusual element to the environment is the reported presence of "Big Foot hoaxers" who occasionally visit the area, seemingly to scare campers and create content. One reviewer recounted an incident of loud knocks in the night followed by large, fabricated footprints on the trail, which caused another camping group to leave in distress. This bizarre phenomenon, while not a natural part of the environment, is something that past campers have experienced and potential visitors should be aware of as a possibility, albeit an unlikely one.

In terms of promotional information, the campground's primary appeal lies in its tranquility, exceptional stargazing opportunities due to the dark skies, and the sense of privacy offered by the wide camp areas. The remoteness itself can be a significant draw for those seeking an escape from more crowded campgrounds. The low cost, while not explicitly mentioned, is often associated with more basic and remote camping facilities. The natural beauty of the lakes, despite potential variations in views, is also a key attraction. However, there are no specific promotions or discounts mentioned in the reviews.

For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize privacy, dark skies for stargazing, and a tranquil natural setting, Forlorn Lakes Campground offers a compelling option. The spacious campsites are also a plus for larger groups or those with multiple tents. However, prospective campers must be prepared for potential downsides such as insects, the possibility of leeches in the water, and basic, potentially unpleasant toilet facilities. Additionally, awareness of potential wildlife encounters, including bears and cougars, and the unusual phenomenon of Bigfoot hoaxers is advisable.

To obtain the most current information on campsite availability, specific conditions, and any relevant advisories regarding wildlife or other factors, local users are encouraged to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers, (509) 395-3400 or +1 509-395-3400. They may also be able to inquire about the specific lakes within the campground and which ones offer the most scenic views or have fewer issues with insects or leeches.

In conclusion, Campground: Forlorn Lakes near Trout Lake, WA, offers a unique camping experience characterized by tranquility, exceptional stargazing, and a remote natural environment. It is ideal for campers who value privacy and a wilderness setting. However, potential visitors should be prepared for basic amenities, potential issues with insects and leeches, and the possibility of wildlife encounters. The unusual reports of Bigfoot hoaxers add an unexpected element to the overall experience. By being aware of both the positive and negative aspects highlighted in the reviews, local users can make an informed decision about whether Forlorn Lakes Campground aligns with their camping preferences and preparedness.
