For those primarily seeking a "camping experience without the bother of a tent," as one reviewer put it, the cabins might suffice. The location near the Chain O' Lakes is a significant draw, with reviewers mentioning enjoying activities such as kayaking and swimming.
However, a major concern raised by multiple guests is the cleanliness of the cabins. One reviewer felt compelled to warn others that their family cabin was "FILTHY," emphasizing that this was their assessment as someone accustomed to rustic settings, tent camping, and minimalism. They described "grunge and filth all over the floors, mud in the showers, hairs inside the fridge, thick dust bunnies on all the fans and vents, and handprints on the glass and mirrors," suggesting a lack of thorough cleaning between guests. Another reviewer echoed this, stating that their cabin "could have been cleaner" and noting "black dirt" on a paper towel used to wipe a floor spill. They also found "lots of dark curly hairs" on the mattress covers, which they deemed "kinda gross," indicating a lack of fresh bedding or adequate cleaning of mattress protectors.
Despite the cleanliness issues, reviewers did highlight some positive aspects of the cabins and the surrounding area. The "secluded, quiet location" was appreciated by one guest, contributing to a peaceful retreat. A notable feature of the cabins is the "large screened-in porch," which was described as "so nice to sit on" and even used for dining. For stays in cooler months, the provision of wood for the woodstove was a significant plus, allowing guests to get a "good fire going." Basic utilities like "good water pressure and hot water" were also mentioned positively.
While campfires are not allowed directly by the cabins, fire rings are available a "very short walk" away, along with a "nice playground area," making the location potentially appealing for families with children. One reviewer specifically mentioned that "the park is great for kids" and indicated they would likely return, being more aware of what to expect regarding the cabin conditions.
The environment surrounding Chain O' Lakes Cabins is clearly a significant attraction. Being located near the Chain O' Lakes in Indiana suggests a setting rich in natural beauty and opportunities for water-based recreation. The mention of kayaking and swimming indicates direct or very close access to the lakes. The proximity to the Chain O' Lakes is ideal for kayaking and swimming, and the presence of a playground and communal fire rings adds to its appeal, particularly for families. However, potential guests should be aware of the recurring concerns regarding the cleanliness of the cabins, with multiple reviewers describing them as quite dirty and in need of better upkeep, including issues with floors, showers, appliances, bedding, and overall dust and grime. While the basic accommodations might suit those wanting a step up from tent camping without extensive amenities, the cleanliness issues are a significant drawback that should be considered. If you are looking for a "camping near me" experience focused on the lake and are prepared for potentially unclean cabin conditions, Chain O' Lakes Cabins might still be an option, especially if you bring your own bedding and cleaning supplies. It would be wise to inquire about recent cleaning protocols and cabin conditions when making a reservation.

Chain O' Lakes Cabins Reviews
We enjoyed our time kayaking and swimming out here, but I really feel like I need to warn others that the family cabins are FILTHY (or at least ours was). I say this as someone who enjoys rustic settings and is used to tent camping and minimalism. And I truly enjoyed the layout of the cabin (large screened in porch that we could eat in) and the area it was in. But our cabin looked like it had not been cleaned in years. Grunge and filth all over the floors, mud in the showers, hairs inside the fridge, thick dust bunnies on all the fans and vents, and handprints on the glass and morrors. The support beams under the top bunk bed were cracked and breaking. I really wish that the staff would at least do some basic cleaning in these before the next guest arrives.
Aug 10, 2022 · Nature's CreamThe cabins here are definitely basic accommodations. We were mostly looking for a camping experience without the bother of a tent, so it was fine.Pluses: secluded, quiet location. The screen porch was so nice to sit on. They provide wood for the woodstove in the cool months and we were able to get a good fire going. No campfires allowed by the cabin, but the fire rings and a nice playground area are a very short walk. Good water pressure and hot water.Minuses: Cabin could have been cleaner. Mattress covers had lots of dark curly hairs which was kinda gross even though we brought our sleeping bags. Like someone had just flopped down on the mattress without a sheet...yuck. I wiped up a spill on the floor and my paper towel was black with dirt. Mattresses were old and squishy.I think we would come back because the park is great for kids, but we will know what to expect next time.
