This immediate river access eliminates the hassle of long carries, making it particularly appealing to boaters. The campground also offers scenic views, with one reviewer mentioning a "nice 'mountain' view" and appreciating the "pretty" trees on the property. The combination of riverside camping and natural beauty creates a tranquil and enjoyable setting for a local getaway.
The proximity to Cheat Canyon and the Narrows further enhances the environmental appeal. These areas are known for their rugged beauty and opportunities for various outdoor activities, making the campground an ideal basecamp for exploring the region's natural wonders. The "woodsy site" mentioned by one camper suggests a setting that provides shade and a sense of immersion in nature.
Friendly Host and Welcoming Atmosphere
A recurring positive aspect in the reviews is the friendliness of the host, Phil. One guest specifically mentioned him as a "friendly host," adding to the welcoming atmosphere of the campground. This personal touch from the host can significantly enhance the camping experience, making guests feel more comfortable and at home. The owners are also described as "super friendly" by another reviewer, reinforcing the notion of a hospitable and welcoming environment at Cheat Canyon Campground.
Direct River Access for Boaters
For boating enthusiasts, especially those classified as "R1 boaters" (referring to a specific level of whitewater boating), the direct riverside access is a major draw. As one boater enthusiastically stated, "Being an R1 boater, I don't like long carries to the river and this is so close that I'm happy." This convenience is a significant feature for those planning to explore the Cheat River by boat, offering a seamless transition from campsite to water. This caters specifically to a segment of the local outdoor community that values easy access for their recreational activities.
Affordable Rates
One of the most striking features mentioned in the reviews is the incredibly affordable rate. One delighted camper exclaimed, "Amazing rate of $5 a night per person!" This exceptional value makes Cheat Canyon Campground an extremely budget-friendly option for local users looking for an inexpensive camping getaway. This affordability, combined with its other positive attributes, makes it a highly attractive choice for individuals and groups seeking an economical outdoor experience without sacrificing essential amenities and a pleasant environment.
Functional Amenities
While one reviewer noted that "the bathrooms could use a little TLC," they also acknowledged that "they functioned properly and were 10x better than using a port-a-john." This provides an objective assessment, indicating that while the facilities might not be brand new, they are adequate and provide a significant upgrade over more basic options. Another camper mentioned the "shower facility which is nice and clean" and that "the hot water works well too." It's important to note that the showers require quarters, so campers should come prepared with change.
The availability of a functional and clean shower facility with hot water is a significant amenity for any campground, especially at such an affordable rate. This addresses a basic comfort need for campers and enhances the overall experience.
Small and Convenient Campground
The campground is described as "small," which can be both a feature and a consideration. A smaller size often contributes to a more intimate and quieter atmosphere. It can also mean fewer crowds and a more personalized experience. The convenience of its location "for the Cheat Canyon and Narrows" is repeatedly highlighted, making it an ideal base for those planning to explore these nearby attractions. This strategic location adds to its appeal for local users who are familiar with or interested in visiting these specific natural landmarks.
Pet-Friendly (Implied)
The mention of the friendly host's "cute" dogs suggests that Cheat Canyon Campground is likely a pet-friendly establishment. While not explicitly stated, the presence of the host's pets often indicates a welcoming attitude towards animals, making it a potential option for local campers who like to travel with their furry companions.
Promotional Information and Local Appeal
The most significant piece of promotional information evident in the reviews is the incredibly low rate of $5 per person per night. This exceptional affordability is a major selling point for budget-conscious local campers. The positive feedback regarding the friendly host, convenient river access, and scenic location further enhances its appeal.
For local residents in the vicinity of Albright, West Virginia, and even those in nearby areas of Pennsylvania and Ohio looking for a 'camping near me' option that offers direct river access for boating, scenic beauty, and an exceptionally low cost, Cheat Canyon Campground presents a compelling opportunity. Cheat Canyon Campground Reviews
This is a small campground, but was very convenient for the Cheat Canyon and Narrows. Phil is a friendly host and his dogs are cute! He allowed us to put-in (on the river) right from our campsite. There's a nice "mountain" view and the trees on the property are pretty. The bathrooms could use a little TLC, but they functioned properly and were 10x better than using a port-a-john. We will definitely stay here again if we are back in the area.
Aug 14, 2020 · Janna BianculliAmazing rate of $5 a night per person. I love going down there and having a riverside access/woodsy site! Being an R1 boater, I don't like long carries to the river and this is so close that I'm happy. Just don't forget to bring quarters for the shower facility which is nice and clean. The hot water works well too. The owners are super friendly. Can't wait to go back!
Sep 05, 2018 · Erie Creek Rafter JanickiVery large and spacious campground located on West Virginia's Cheat River. Quiet and plenty of room to stretch out. Amazingly, the campground actually has cellular coverage (T-mobile). The price as of 2020 was $5 a head - - hard to beat. Yes, it's a substantial drive from I-68 but worth it!
Aug 30, 2020 · Bill ClugstonGreat and inexpensive place to camp - convenient to Cheat River Outfitters white water rafting company (great rafting company by the way). I just finished doing a white water rafting trip with Cheat River Outfitters up the road about 1/2 mile and wanted a place to stay over for the night. Turned out to be a great place. I tent camped for $5 !! How can you beat that? Also nice are the hot showers (pay showers for 1$ but nice and hot) for cleaning up after a rafting trip. There is a nice wide field to camp and also some camp spots down in the tree line near the river for a quite and private spot. the sites have a fire ring and newer picnic tables. the day i was there, there was only me. during the week i imagine it will always be quite. It would be a nice place if you want privacy and not many loud people/campers/RVs. There are showers in the main building and flush toilets. I would have given it 5 stars if the bathrooms were a little more cleaned up - like a few spider webs. ..lthough at 5$ you aren't getting a Holiday Inn spa. Also you do get some road noise from rt26 from crazy truck/rude truck drivers using their engine breaks. but if you are near the river the rushing water blocks out the noise pretty well. It is about 4 minutes down the road from Cheat River Outfitters. Go South on rt26 to Kingwood about a 10 minute drive to find a supermarket, Chinese Buffet, Catholic Church (St Sebastian 10:30 AM Sunday Mass), and a few stores. i would highly recommend this place if you want a very cheap, flush toilet, hot shower, low key, nice camp site, few people palce to camp. Also - a real nice treat up the road about 1-2 miles north on rt26..check out the old blast furnace site ( small road side sign marking the spot) then walk up stream ~20 yds feet - the best coolest water fall cascades that will surprise you.
