Rhododendron Camping Area

Unnamed Road, Masontown, WV 26542, USA

Very well maintained, clean campground with spacious campsites and clean, well stocked bathroom (no showers). Very close to Cooper’s Rock overlook, playground, hiking/biking trails, Cheat Lake, marinas, etc.Definitely bring your own wood. And pop-up tents are a good idea. (Apparently due to the geography it rains there quite a bit so the extra layer of shelter was key.)Most of the sites have at least one close-ish neighboring site so don’t expect tons of privacy if it’s booked, but it is a heavily wooded campground so there is some privacy and lots of shade. Fire pits have a built-in grill, and are pretty close to the one-way little road loop. The road is nicely paved and in good shape (so it’s nice and quiet). There are ***no RVs*** allowed in this campground and two tents max per site.Dogs allowed but must be leashed. Two walking trails lead to the toilet house which is in the center of the campground (see map photo attached) - one trail starts from campsite #4 (and passes the water point) and one is next to campsite #14 (which is directly across from #13). It’s just a few minutes walk through the woods (our campsite #13 was about 630 ft away - see photo), but note that the path is dirt so very bumpy with roots/rocks and muddy in the rain etc (FYI for those with mobility issues. The walk was shorter from #4 I believe). Some sites had a hook for garbage bags, others didn’t.There are group sites available as well, which would have been nice for us, but we didn’t see that in the reservation site so I have no idea how to book those (or whether RVs are allowed there or not). We had a group of people - some with tents and a party with an RV, so the RV folks had to go to McCollum campground down the road, which was a slight bummer. We called the number on the reservation site and they gave us all conflicting information almost every time, so beware of that.We didn’t have any issue with creatures messing around with our stuff overnight, but there were signs that bears have been seen in the campground and warnings to be “bear safe” (ie lock food/fragranced/cooking items in the car overnight when possible).Overall the campground is great even though the booking process was confusing - we had a great time there and enjoyed it! - Elena Facchini

Rhododendron Camping Area Introduce

Are you searching for the ideal "camping near me" in the picturesque landscapes of West Virginia? Look no further than the Rhododendron Camping Area, nestled near Masontown, WV. This well-regarded campground offers a fantastic escape for local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a tranquil and nature-rich experience. While it focuses primarily on tent camping, its prime location and excellent maintenance make it a top choice for those looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Mountain State.

Embrace the Natural Environment

Rhododendron Camping Area is lauded for its heavily wooded environment, providing ample shade and a genuine feeling of being surrounded by nature. The spacious campsites offer a comfortable setup for your tents, allowing you to spread out and enjoy your surroundings. While some sites are close to their neighbors, the dense woodland still provides a degree of privacy, especially during less crowded times. You'll appreciate the quiet ambiance, enhanced by the paved and well-maintained one-way road loop within the campground, minimizing traffic noise and ensuring a peaceful stay.

Essential Amenities and Services

The campground prides itself on its cleanliness and upkeep. You'll find a well-maintained and clean bathroom facility, although it's important to note that showers are not available on-site. Each campsite is equipped with a fire pit featuring a built-in grill, perfect for cooking delicious meals under the open sky. Some sites also include a convenient hook for garbage bags, adding to the ease of maintaining a tidy campsite. A water point is also available for campers' convenience, located near campsite #4.

Features and Activities at Your Doorstep

One of the standout features of Rhododendron Camping Area is its exceptional location. Situated very close to the renowned Cooper’s Rock overlook, you'll have easy access to breathtaking panoramic views of the Cheat River Gorge. Adventure awaits with nearby hiking and biking trails, catering to various skill levels and offering opportunities to explore the stunning natural beauty of the area. For those who enjoy water activities, Cheat Lake and its marinas are also within close proximity, providing options for boating, fishing, and other recreational pursuits.

Important Considerations for Your Stay

It's crucial to be aware of a few specific details to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping experience at Rhododendron Camping Area. Firstly, RVs are strictly not permitted within the campground. The focus here is on tent camping, with a maximum of two tents allowed per site. Additionally, it is highly recommended to bring your own firewood, as it is not readily available within the campground itself. Given the local geography, it's also wise to consider bringing a pop-up tent or an extra layer of shelter, as rain can be a frequent occurrence.

For those with mobility considerations, it's worth noting that the walking trails leading to the toilet house are unpaved, with uneven terrain including roots and rocks, and can become muddy during wet weather. The walk to the toilet house from some campsites, such as campsite #13 (approximately 630 feet), involves a short trek through the woods. The trail starting from campsite #4 is reportedly shorter.

While dogs are welcome at Rhododendron Camping Area, they must be kept on a leash at all times to ensure the safety and comfort of all campers.

Group Camping Options

For larger groups, Rhododendron Camping Area does offer group campsites. These could be an excellent option for families or friends looking to camp together. However, information regarding the booking process for these group sites and whether RVs are permitted in these specific areas is currently unclear. It is advisable to inquire directly with the campground for details on group site availability and regulations.

A Note on Booking

Based on recent experiences, it's important to be aware that contacting the campground via phone for booking information may result in inconsistent or conflicting details. It is recommended to exercise caution and potentially seek clarification from multiple sources if possible when making reservations.

Wildlife Awareness

While recent campers have not reported issues with wildlife disturbing their belongings, it's important to be aware that bears have been sighted in the campground. Campers are strongly advised to practice "bear safe" habits, which includes securely storing all food, fragrant items, and cooking equipment inside their vehicles overnight whenever feasible. This simple precaution will help ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife.

Choosing the Right Campsite

As noted by fellow campers, the individual campsites at Rhododendron Camping Area can vary significantly. Factors such as the presence of a constructed tent pad, the location of the fire ring and picnic table, and the ground surface (ranging from flat dirt to rocky and slightly slanted) can differ from site to site. When making your booking, it is highly recommended to zoom in on the available site photos as much as possible to get a clear understanding of the specific characteristics of each site and choose one that best suits your needs and preferences. If possible, consider camping during the weekdays when prices may be lower and the campground less crowded.

Your Ideal "Camping Near Me" Experience Awaits

Despite some potential challenges with the booking process and the variability of individual campsites, the overwhelming consensus is that Rhododendron Camping Area offers a fantastic camping experience for local users. Its well-maintained facilities, coupled with its incredible proximity to natural attractions like Cooper’s Rock and Cheat Lake, make it a highly desirable destination for tent campers seeking a peaceful and convenient escape into the beauty of West Virginia. So, if you're looking for quality "camping near me," consider Rhododendron Camping Area for your next outdoor adventure!
