For local adventurers seeking the perfect "camping near me" experience, McCollum Campground, situated within the renowned Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown, West Virginia, offers a compelling blend of natural beauty and essential amenities. This campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the breathtaking landscapes and engaging in various outdoor activities that the state forest is famous for. While it boasts numerous appealing features, it's important for potential visitors, especially those with larger recreational vehicles, to be aware of certain limitations regarding campsite dimensions.
Immerse Yourself in the Stunning Environment of Coopers Rock State Forest
McCollum Campground benefits immensely from its location within Coopers Rock State Forest. This vast natural expanse is celebrated for its spectacular overlooks, offering panoramic vistas of the Cheat River Gorge and the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. The campground itself is characterized by significant tree coverage, providing ample shade and a sense of immersion in the forest environment. For those who appreciate direct access to nature, McCollum Campground is a true haven. Numerous walkable trails are conveniently located near the campsites, inviting campers to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region at their leisure. The proximity to the lake, although not directly within the campground, offers additional recreational opportunities a short drive away.
Essential Services and Amenities for a Comfortable Stay
McCollum Campground strives to provide a comfortable and convenient experience for its guests by offering several key amenities. A well-maintained bath and shower house is available, ensuring campers have access to necessary hygiene facilities. Notably, the campground also features a laundry room, which includes a dish sink equipped with a garbage disposal – a significant convenience for longer stays and managing campsite cleanliness. Each campsite is equipped with electric hookups, allowing campers to power essential devices and appliances, enhancing the overall comfort of their outdoor experience. Additionally, a water pump is available within the campground, providing access to potable water. For those with RVs and trailers, a dump site is conveniently located at the entrance/exit of the camping area.
Highlighting the Features: Hiking, Convenience, and Natural Beauty
One of the standout features of McCollum Campground is its direct access to the extensive network of gorgeous hiking trails within Coopers Rock State Forest. These trails cater to various skill levels and lead to stunning overlooks that are a hallmark of the area. The convenience of having a bath/shower house and a laundry room with a dish sink sets McCollum Campground apart from more rustic camping options in the vicinity. The availability of electric hookups at each site adds a level of comfort that many campers appreciate. The combination of these amenities with the surrounding natural beauty makes McCollum Campground a desirable location for those seeking a balance between outdoor adventure and convenience.
Important Considerations: Campsite Size and Accessibility for Larger RVs
Based on recent feedback from campers, it is crucial to note that the campsites at McCollum Campground are generally narrow, including the designated handicap spots. Furthermore, the orientation of the sites relative to the road path has been described as somewhat "backwards," making backing in larger campers and RVs (especially those around 33 feet or longer) significantly challenging and, in many cases, impossible. This limitation is a key consideration for visitors traveling with bigger rigs. The current infrastructure of McCollum Campground appears to be better suited for tents and smaller camping setups. However, there is ongoing construction within the campground, which offers hope for future improvements, potentially including the addition of larger, pull-through sites that would better accommodate larger recreational vehicles.
Hear from Fellow Campers: A Mix of Praise and Caution
The reviews from fellow campers paint a picture of a campground with significant appeal, particularly regarding its location and amenities. Many praise the "great campgrounds and location," highlighting the convenience of the bath/shower house, laundry facilities, and electric hookups. The easy access to "gorgeous hiking trails with overlooks" is consistently mentioned as a major draw. One enthusiastic camper stated they "will definitely visit again!" However, it's equally important to consider the feedback concerning campsite size. The difficulty of maneuvering and backing in larger trailers is a recurring concern, with one reviewer explicitly stating, "This campsite is not setup for bigger trailers or RVs." While acknowledging the beauty of the area and the proximity to the lake, potential visitors with larger rigs should carefully assess whether their vehicle can be accommodated within the existing campsite layout.
Potential Future Improvements: Construction Underway
It is encouraging to note that there is ongoing construction at McCollum Campground. While the specific details of these improvements are not fully outlined in the provided information, the fact that construction is taking place suggests a commitment to enhancing the campground facilities. One camper expressed hope that the construction would lead to the addition of "some bigger sites and pull thru-s," which would significantly improve accessibility for larger RVs and trailers in the future. Visitors planning trips in the longer term may want to inquire about the progress and nature of these upgrades, as they could address the current limitations regarding campsite size and accessibility.
Plan Your Visit to McCollum Campground: Embrace the Natural Beauty
If you are a local camper in search of "camping near me" and value access to stunning natural landscapes, excellent hiking trails, and essential amenities like a bathhouse, laundry, and electric hookups, McCollum Campground within Coopers Rock State Forest is a destination worth considering. McCollum Campground Reviews
Great campgrounds and location! Amenities include bath/shower house. Laundry room with dish sink that has garage disposal. Electric on site and water pump. Not to mention gorgeous hiking trails with overlooks. Will definitely visit again!
Oct 05, 2024 · Ashley RestuccioThe camp sites are narrow, even the handicap spots. The sites also seemed to be almost backwards compared to the road path, so backing in with a bigger camper (we have a 33') was very difficult and impossible in most of the sites. This campsite is not setup for bigger trailers or RVs. Most of the lots had tree coverage with lots of walkable trails near the camp. There is a dump site at the end/entrance to the camping area. There is construction being done, so hopefully they will be adding some bigger sites and pull thru-s. They only offer electric but there is a small bath house by the handicap sites and general store. The area was beautiful and not far from the lake.
Jun 07, 2024 · Laura LeslieOverall. A nice campground. If you’re going with a camper or RV some of the spots are angled to road poorly so backing in can be tricky. Consider looking at the map of the campground so you know what you’re getting into. All sites have electric hookups and some have water as well. A dump station is located at the entrance.
Jul 16, 2024 · Andrew Eidnier(Using my friends phone for anonymity) My legs got burned badly by the sun when we went White Water Rafting someplace in PA and the people in the gift shop by the campgrounds were super nice about it and gave me burn spray and burn cream completely free! They even gave me medicine to numb the pain which was a massive help. 10/10 service honestly, and the camping is so much fun!
Jul 20, 2024 · Grant MillerQe stayed here 4 nights in our Super C motorhome, Jack the camp host was friendly and helpful and his wife was also so nice to deal with on the office. Bathhouse was clean, old but I used it to shower and have. O complaints!! Hike is the area we're great as well!
