Cunard Lake Campground Introduce
For local residents in the Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin area seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience, Cunard Lake Campground presents a unique and appealing option. Located at 7868-7956 Lake Cunard Campgrove Rd, Lake Tomahawk, WI 54539, USA, this campground distinguishes itself as one of the few generator-free campgrounds within Wisconsin's state forests. This characteristic alone sets it apart for those who prioritize a peaceful and natural ambiance, free from the noise of generators, allowing for a more immersive experience in the sounds of nature.
One of the standout features of Cunard Lake Campground, as highlighted by visitor reviews, is its beautiful swimming area. The lake water is reported to be clear, and the lake bottom is sandy, creating an inviting and pleasant environment for swimming and enjoying the water. This makes Cunard Lake an excellent choice for families and individuals looking for "camping near me" that includes opportunities for refreshing dips in a natural lake. Imagine spending warm summer days swimming in the clear waters and relaxing on the sandy bottom – a perfect way to unwind and enjoy the outdoors.
It's important for potential visitors to be aware of the campground's operating season. As noted in a review, Cunard Lake Campground has a relatively short season, closing for the year immediately after Labor Day. This means that local users planning a late-season camping trip should consider this limitation and make their reservations accordingly for stays within its operating period. This shorter season likely contributes to the preservation of the campground's natural environment and its quiet atmosphere during its open months.
The environment at Cunard Lake Campground offers diverse camping experiences to suit different preferences. Several off-lake campsites are described as providing a very secluded "camping in the woods" experience. These sites offer a high degree of privacy, both from the campground road and from neighboring campsites. For those seeking a more intimate and solitary connection with nature, these secluded wooded spots could be ideal for a peaceful retreat. You can look forward to being surrounded by the tranquility of the forest, with ample space and privacy to truly relax and disconnect.
In contrast, the campsites located directly on the lake offer nice views of Cunard Lake. However, these sites are noted to be more open to the campground road, potentially offering less privacy compared to the wooded sites. While the lake views are undoubtedly a significant draw, especially for those who enjoy waking up to the sight of the water, campers should be aware of the potential for more activity and less seclusion in these lakefront areas.
For those who prefer a bit more of a walk to their campsite and a greater sense of immersion in nature, Cunard Lake Campground features walk-in sites that are reported to be very nice and quite popular among visitors. These sites typically require a short walk from a designated parking area, further enhancing the feeling of being away from it all. One reviewer specifically recommended walk-in site 23, mentioning that it offered even ground, a view of the lake through the trees, and was perfect for hammocks. The popularity of these walk-in sites suggests that they offer a desirable balance of accessibility and a more secluded camping experience.
General feedback from visitors indicates that Cunard Lake Campground is generally a quiet place, further enhancing its appeal for those seeking a peaceful "camping near me" getaway. The friendly campground hosts contribute to a positive atmosphere, and the vault toilets are reportedly kept clean, which is an important aspect of a comfortable camping experience. The availability of a small swimming beach adds another recreational option for campers, allowing for easy access to enjoy the clear waters of Cunard Lake.
One practical tip from a visitor is to be aware that Google directions might lead you slightly past the actual campground entrance. However, the reviewer noted that the campground is easy to find with clear signage once you are in the vicinity. This local knowledge can be helpful for those navigating to the campground for the first time, ensuring a smooth arrival.
In summary, Cunard Lake Campground offers a unique "camping near me" experience in the Lake Tomahawk area, particularly for those who appreciate a generator-free environment and the tranquility of nature. Its clear lake with a sandy bottom is perfect for swimming, and the campground offers a variety of campsite options, from secluded wooded sites to lakefront spots with scenic views, as well as popular walk-in sites for a more immersive experience. While its season is short, closing after Labor Day, the positive reviews regarding its beauty, cleanliness, and peaceful atmosphere make it a highly recommended destination for local camping enthusiasts. Be sure to consider your preference for privacy and proximity to the lake when choosing your campsite and plan your visit within the operating season to enjoy this gem of a Wisconsin state forest campground.

Cunard Lake Campground Reviews
Cunard Lake is one of just several generator-free campgrounds across the state forests in Wisconsin. Here and Starrett Lake are the only two such places offered on this particular state forest. The swimming area is very nice, lake water is clear, lake bottom is sand. The one shortcoming of this campground is that it has a very short season, closing for the year immediately after Labor Day.A couple of the off-lake sites provide a very secluded “camping in the woods” experience with privacy both from the campground road and neighboring sites.Sites on the lake have a nice view but are much more open to the campground road. The walk-in sites are very nice and are quite popular among visitors.
Nov 12, 2022 · Greg KruegerFYI the google directions take you a little down the road from the actually campground but it is really easy to find and there is clear signage when you get to the campground. We stayed at the walk-in site 23 which I highly recommend. You can see the lake through the trees, it was very even ground, and if you bring hammocks it would be the perfect spot for you. The campground is generally quite and the hosts were very friendly, vault toilets kept clean. We took advantage of the little swimming beach too.
Jul 04, 2021 · Joyce KempfThe snails at this campground are downright unhinged. Ever since I found a ceramic snail sculpture (missing its eyes) in the woods on July 7th, 2022, the real snails have been following me EVERYWHERE. They seem to have developed the intelligence required to worship the sculpture that I saw, and that is a danger to our society. If you come here, do NOT get close to a snail if you see one. It's for your own safety. Nice beach tho
Feb 22, 2023 · ornagThis is hands down my most favorite campground. Such a beautiful campground and the campsites are amazing. There's small ones and large ones, walk ins, and there's beautiful campsites overlooking the lake. The lake by the way has HUGE bass and blue gills.
Aug 20, 2022 · Jessa ZimmermannCampground is nice. The hostess for the 2020 season walks into campsites telling campers radios are not allowed but that isn't true. I had 2 other campers ask me about the hostess and her rude tactics. One camper, who was here for 2 weeks said the hostess goes around taking wood left for the next campers for herself and the other camper shared her displeasure about being told she couldn't listen to a baseball game with the volume on low because the hostess told her she couldn't. No campers made complaints to the hostess. The hostess takes her hostessing job way too seriously and takes the fun out of camping there. I was threatened by the hostess to have the ranger called on me. I told her I would wait for the ranger but no one ever showed up and she has since left us alone to where we can actually enjoy our stay now. Heads up, radios are allowed so long as they are not turned up loud, so don't let her ruin your family camping trip. #worstcamphostess. Don't let her bully you. Use up all your wood. Also, the campsite had pee toilet paper and garbage laying around the site when we arrived. Snapped pictures before setting up our tents. Not sure if it's the hostess's job to make sure sites are clean and ready for the next camper but I would assume it is.
