Dobbins ARB Rec Area & FamCamp Introduce
Nestled in the heart of Marietta, Georgia, within the secure confines of Dobbins Air Reserve Base, lies the Dobbins ARB Rec Area & FamCamp. This unique campground offers a tranquil and convenient escape for local users seeking "camping near me." More than just a place to park your RV or set up camp, Dobbins FamCamp provides a sense of community and security that sets it apart from typical campgrounds in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
For veterans and military families searching for a reliable and comfortable place to stay, Dobbins FamCamp emerges as an ideal choice. As one reviewer aptly notes, its location is "incredibly convenient—close to everything you need while still providing a peaceful and well-maintained environment." This strategic positioning allows campers to easily access local amenities, attractions, and services in Marietta and the broader Atlanta region, making it a perfect base for exploring the area or simply enjoying a relaxing getaway close to home.
One of the most significant advantages of choosing Dobbins FamCamp is the unparalleled security afforded by its location on a military base. This feature provides a "level of comfort and peace of mind that you just don’t get at most other RV parks." For those who value safety and a secure environment, this campground offers a unique and reassuring experience. The well-maintained facilities further contribute to a comfortable stay, ensuring that basic needs are met with cleanliness and care.
The campground fosters a welcoming atmosphere, particularly for fellow service members and veterans. This sense of community can be a significant draw for those who appreciate camaraderie and shared experiences. Whether you are in the area for a short visit or planning an extended stay, Dobbins FamCamp strives to offer a balanced blend of accessibility, security, and a strong sense of belonging.
While the convenience and security are major highlights, it's important to understand the nature of the camping experience at Dobbins FamCamp. As one long-time visitor describes it, the campground has been "pretty much left to nature" since its establishment when campers and trailers were smaller. This means that while the location is central, the individual campsites offer a more rustic, "back in the woods experience."
This natural setting can present both advantages and challenges. The mature trees provide ample shade and contribute to the peaceful ambiance. However, their growth over time can sometimes make maneuvering larger RVs into sites a bit tricky. The Rec staff has identified some problematic trees with red "danger" tape, indicating potential obstacles. Campers with larger rigs should exercise caution and may find some sites more accessible than others.
The natural environment also means that some light maintenance on individual sites might be necessary upon arrival. This could involve clearing away fallen debris like pine cones, pine needles, and small branches to ensure a comfortable and safe setup, especially around amenities like the provided grills with stepping stone pads. While this requires a bit of initial effort, it's part of the more natural camping experience offered here.
Despite these aspects, many find the "back in the woods experience, in the heart of Atlanta" to be a significant draw. The campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in nature while still being close to urban conveniences. The main cross-base roadway situated on the north side generally experiences quiet traffic, further enhancing the peaceful atmosphere.
Conveniently located across the road from the campground is the Base Exchange (BX), providing easy access to shopping and essential supplies. This proximity adds another layer of convenience for campers, allowing them to quickly pick up necessities without having to venture far from their site. Interestingly, even with this accessibility, the BX parking lot typically doesn't see heavy traffic.
The bathhouse facilities at Dobbins FamCamp are reported to be nice and offer the valuable amenity of free laundry. This can be particularly beneficial for longer stays, allowing campers to maintain their laundry without incurring extra costs or leaving the campground. However, it's important to note that the campground itself has limited lighting. Under the dense tree canopy, it gets quite dark at night, so bringing flashlights and lanterns is highly recommended for navigating the area safely after sunset.
Dobbins FamCamp features a relatively small number of sites, with only 18 available. Despite this limited capacity, one reviewer noted that there were even open slots over Memorial Day weekend, suggesting that with proper planning and advance booking, securing a site is often possible. It is always advisable to "Plan ahead. Call ahead" to ensure availability, especially during peak seasons and holiday weekends. The phone number for Dobbins ARB Rec Area & FamCamp is (678) 655-4870 or +1 678-655-4870.
In conclusion, Dobbins ARB Rec Area & FamCamp offers a distinctive camping experience for local users seeking "camping near me," particularly veterans, military families, and those who appreciate a secure and more natural setting close to urban amenities. While some sites may require a bit of initial setup due to the surrounding environment and maneuvering larger RVs requires care, the convenience of its location, the added security of being on a military base, the welcoming community, and the availability of facilities like a nice bathhouse with free laundry make it a compelling option. For those looking for a "back in the woods" feel within easy reach of Atlanta, Dobbins FamCamp presents a unique and valuable opportunity. Be sure to call ahead to plan your visit and experience this hidden gem for yourself.

Apr 01, 2025 · D. MorganA glass half full, half empty issue. How far back in history do have to go when campers and trailers where relatively small. That's when this Fam Camp was created. Pretty much left to nature. Each time we come I need to do work on the site. One time the site, like most, was cut into an embankment. Much erosion made it hard to move around in back of our trailer. Did some shoveling. This time was similar. The grills have pads of stepping stones. This one was totally obscured by dirt and a mound of pine cones, pine needles, boken branches & twigs. Had to clear it all away lest an ember start a conflagration. Biggest issue are the trees. Left to grow over time they make it often very difficult to maneuver a rig into a site. Had a big "Grand Design" come in this week and it lost an encounter with a tree. Rec staff have tied red "danger" tape around many trees. Not much help there. BUT it is a back in the woods experience, in the heart of Atlanta. The main cross base roadway is on the north side but traffic is quiet. And the BX is across the road. Never seen more than a few cars in the lot. Bathhouse is nice. With free laundry. Bring flaslights and lanterns because there are no lights. Under the tree canopy it gets really dark at night. Only 18 sites, yet over Memorial Day weekend there were open slots. Plan ahead. Call ahead. For us it is the more than half full variety.
Jun 01, 2021 · Homer PadenOnly $25 per night. Close to many things. Parks, restaurants, shops and more. My only complaint is that they change the bathhouse code daily. I don't understand why. It's a secure military base. Who's out there waiting to break into the bathrooms??? Ridiculous!
Apr 01, 2024 · Sha'ronUpdate. With new management, prices have gone up from $16/night to $25/night from Oct.-Mar. and $30/night from Apr.- Sept. with no new amenities. With New Management, its back to being a campground again. No more permanent residents, sites are now well marked. The park is quiet and roads are paved. Bathhouse is old but clean with free washers and dryers.
May 16, 2023 · Reyne TallentsI was assigned site 12 and when I arrived someone else had parked in it. When I went to the office the lady was not very friendly. When I asked her a question she pointed me to Terry. Terry was very helpful, like he really liked his job. I would give Terry 5 stars. The directions I received were vague and the signage to the office could have been better.
