Ely Lake Campground Introduce
For local residents in Michigan and those seeking a more traditional and "off-grid camping near me" experience, Ely Lake Campground, located at 5020 116th Ave, Fennville, MI 49408, USA, offers a rustic retreat in a natural setting. You can reach them at (269) 686-9088 or +1 269-686-9088 for inquiries, although it's important to note that campsites are generally first come, first served, with reservations recommended at least a week in advance. Based on visitor feedback, Ely Lake Campground provides a peaceful environment focused on nature and basic amenities, appealing to those who prefer a more self-sufficient camping style.
The environment at Ely Lake Campground is described as a "hidden jewel" and appreciated for its natural beauty. The presence of Ely Lake suggests opportunities for water-based activities, with one reviewer mentioning plans to bring a boat for fishing. The lake likely contributes to a serene and picturesque setting, ideal for those looking to escape the more developed and amenity-rich campgrounds. The campground is also noted for offering campsites that can be "isolated enough to give us plenty of privacy," which is a significant draw for campers who value seclusion and a more intimate connection with nature during their "camping near me" experience. This sense of privacy enhances the feeling of being away from it all and allows for a more tranquil retreat.
In terms of services and features, Ely Lake Campground embraces a more rustic approach. It's explicitly stated that there are "no hookups at all," meaning campers should not expect electrical, water, or sewer connections at their sites. This characteristic tends to deter larger RVs that rely on these amenities, contributing to the campground's quieter and more natural atmosphere. The basic facilities include "pumped water and vault toilets" (outhouses) located throughout the campground, as well as "hand water pumps." It's also important to note that there are "no dump stations for RVs" available. Campers planning to bring RVs should be aware of these limitations and ensure they are prepared for off-grid camping with self-contained water and waste management.
Despite the lack of hookups, Ely Lake Campground does offer some basic recreational amenities. There is a "beach area with picnic tables and a grill," providing a communal space for swimming, enjoying meals outdoors, and socializing. This area likely serves as a central point for campers to gather and enjoy the lake and the natural surroundings. The availability of picnic tables and a grill makes it easier for campers to prepare and enjoy food in the outdoors, enhancing the overall camping experience.
A significant feature to be aware of when considering Ely Lake Campground for your "camping near me" trip is its policy regarding campsite availability. Sites are "first come, first served," which means that spontaneity is possible, but it also carries the risk of not securing a site, especially during peak seasons or weekends. To mitigate this risk, the recommendation is to "making reservations at least a week in advance." While the review mentions first come, first served, the suggestion to make reservations implies that a reservation system is in place, and it is advisable to utilize it to ensure a spot, particularly if you have specific site preferences or are planning a trip during a busy time.
The fact that Ely Lake Campground is described as a "little off-grid county run campground" provides additional context. Being county-run often means that the focus is on providing access to nature and basic facilities rather than extensive amenities. It also suggests that the campground may adhere to regulations and standards set by the county parks system. The mention of "friendly Rangers" indicates that there is staff presence to oversee the campground and provide assistance to visitors, contributing to a safe and well-managed environment.
For local users specifically seeking an "off-grid camping near me" experience, Ely Lake Campground appears to be an excellent option. The absence of hookups ensures a more traditional and rustic camping feel, attracting those who prefer to rely on their own resources and immerse themselves fully in nature. The presence of a lake for fishing, a beach area for recreation, and private campsites further enhances its appeal. However, potential campers must be prepared for the lack of modern conveniences like electricity and running water at their individual sites and plan accordingly for water needs and waste disposal.
The recommendation to make reservations, despite the first-come-first-served mention, is a crucial piece of information for local users planning a visit. It suggests that while walk-ins might be possible, securing a reservation is the safer route, especially if you are planning a weekend or holiday trip when the campground is likely to be more popular. Checking the specific procedures for reservations with the Ely Lake Campground or the Allegan County Parks and Recreation (if applicable) would be a prudent step in planning your "camping near me" adventure.
In conclusion, Ely Lake Campground offers a charming and rustic "camping near me" experience in Fennville, Michigan, perfect for those who appreciate a more traditional and off-grid style of camping. Its key features include:
- A natural setting with access to Ely Lake for fishing.
- Private campsites offering a sense of seclusion.
- Basic amenities including vault toilets and hand pump water.
- A beach area with picnic tables and a grill for communal use.
- Friendly and helpful park rangers.
- A policy of first come, first served for sites, with strong recommendations for advance reservations.
- Its status as a county-run campground, emphasizing natural preservation and basic facilities.
For local campers looking to disconnect from modern conveniences and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature, Ely Lake Campground provides a "hidden jewel" that promises a peaceful and rewarding "camping near me" experience. Just be sure to plan ahead and consider making a reservation to secure your spot at this popular rustic retreat.

Ely Lake Campground Reviews
My wife and I love coming here. It has pumped water and vault toilets so don't expect a power plug at your camp site. The site we use is isolated enough to give us plenty of privacy and the Rangers have been nothing but friendly to us. I will be bringing my boat next time to do some fishing on the lake.
Apr 04, 2025 · Thomas LeeThis little off-grid county run campground is a hidden jewel. There's no hookups at all, which keeps the bigger rigs away mostly it seems. There are outhouses and hand water pumps throughout the campground. There are no dump stations for RVs. There is a beach area with picnic tables and a grill.Check-out is 3pm, Check-in is 5p. Sites are first come, first served. I recommend making reservations at least a week in advance.
May 04, 2024 · Brandon PrengerI tend to camp alone and this is one of the few places I will not do that. I've driven through a couple of times and have seen some sketchy looking campers. It's a shame, because it's a beautiful rustic park.
Feb 23, 2025 · That Michigan GirlBeautiful! Very rustic so come prepared! Only a vault toliet, no showers. Limited running water.
Jun 01, 2023 · AshThere is a great trail around the lake that makes for an enjoyable walk. It's just over a mile all together. You can bring your dog, needs to be on a leash. Campsites placed all around the lake and appear to be well kept. We plan to come back to camp! It's 17/night from what we saw posted.
