Fort Custer Equestrian Camp & Trailhead

Augusta Climax Rd, Augusta, MI 49053, USA

1/2 mile west of the rustic Equestrian Campground, in the Recreation Area Campground, I had the best camp shower experience in my 60 years of camping. It's just off the 5,000 mile long North Country Trail. All 5 shower booths in this new restroom building (c. 2024) are wheelchair accessible (large unisex shower also has its own toilet and sink). Shower rooms' celestory ventilation prevents those cold drafts through a door vent. Smooth terrazzo stone floors can be slippery when wet. Air hand dryers in the toilet area, with transom windows for fresh summer breezes. ☀️ It's near a swamp, so summer mosquitos are abundant, but not a problem for us "winter" campers. - Jan Katz

The environment surrounding the Fort Custer Equestrian Camp & Trailhead is characterized by the diverse landscapes of the Fort Custer Recreation Area. This large and varied terrain includes woodlands, open fields, lakes, and the winding Kalamazoo River, creating a scenic and engaging backdrop for both camping and horseback riding. The campground's location provides direct access to these natural environments, allowing riders to seamlessly transition from their campsite to the numerous trails that wind through the recreation area. The services and features at the Fort Custer Equestrian Camp are specifically designed to accommodate the needs of horse owners and riders. A significant highlight, based on recent customer feedback, is the availability of "electric sites for the equestrians." This is a valuable amenity, allowing for the use of electrical appliances within horse trailers and providing added comfort during your stay. While specific details about the number of electric sites or other hookups (water, sewer) at the equestrian camp are not mentioned, the presence of electricity is a notable advantage for equestrian campers.

A recent addition to the broader Fort Custer Recreation Area, located approximately half a mile west of the rustic Equestrian Campground within the main Recreation Area Campground, is a new restroom building constructed around 2024. This facility boasts "the best camp shower experience" according to one long-time camper. Notably, all five shower booths in this new restroom are "wheelchair accessible," with a large unisex shower also featuring its own toilet and sink, ensuring inclusivity and convenience for all visitors. The shower rooms are designed with "celestory ventilation" to prevent cold drafts, and while the "smooth terrazzo stone floors can be slippery when wet," this modern amenity significantly enhances the overall camping experience for all users of the recreation area, including those staying at the Equestrian Camp who may find it a convenient option.

The primary feature of the Fort Custer Equestrian Camp & Trailhead is its direct access to the "great" network of riding trails within the Fort Custer Recreation Area. These trails are clearly a major draw for visitors, with one reviewer specifically mentioning how much they "really enjoyed the riding." The variety and quality of these trails likely cater to different riding preferences and skill levels, allowing for leisurely strolls through the woods or more challenging rides across varied terrain. The ability to explore the diverse landscapes of the recreation area on horseback is a unique and compelling feature for those seeking "horse trails Michigan."

It's important to note a potential environmental consideration mentioned in one review: the proximity to a swamp, which can lead to an abundance of "summer mosquitos." However, the reviewer also notes that this was "not a problem for us 'winter' campers," suggesting that the mosquito issue may be seasonal. Campers visiting during the warmer months should likely come prepared with insect repellent.

The mention of the Equestrian Campground being "rustic" by the reviewer who enjoyed the new shower facilities suggests that the amenities directly within the Equestrian Camp itself might be more basic compared to the newer facilities in the main Recreation Area Campground. However, the provision of electric sites specifically for equestrian campers indicates a recognition of their unique needs and a commitment to providing essential services.
