Grand Island KOA Journey Introduce
For local residents in Nebraska and travelers in the vicinity of Doniphan, seeking a "camping near me" experience, the Grand Island KOA Journey, located at 904 S B Rd, Doniphan, NE 68832, USA, presents a familiar option under the well-known KOA (Kampgrounds of America) brand. Reachable at the toll-free number (800) 562-0850 or +1 800-562-0850, this campground aims to provide a convenient and potentially amenity-rich stop for various types of campers.
Examining recent customer reviews offers a balanced perspective on what local users might expect at the Grand Island KOA Journey. One positive review highlights a "wonderful stay," emphasizing the campground's cleanliness and well-maintained environment. This suggests that for some visitors, the park meets the standards of a comfortable and tidy camping destination. The reviewer also specifically commends Heidi and Candy at the front desk for their exceptional friendliness and helpfulness during check-in, as well as for providing valuable information about the campground's amenities. Such positive interactions with staff can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, making guests feel welcome and well-supported. This positive feedback serves as a strong recommendation for those who value a pleasant and well-serviced "camping near me" option.
However, another more critical review presents a contrasting experience, indicating potential inconsistencies or areas where the campground may fall short for some visitors. This guest expressed disappointment, noting that the KOA "felt more like a trailer park." This observation suggests a potentially high number of long-term or permanent residents, which can sometimes alter the atmosphere and feel of a campground compared to one primarily catering to short-term travelers and vacationers. For local users seeking a traditional camping ambiance focused on temporary stays and recreational use, this "trailer park" feel might be a significant consideration.
Furthermore, this reviewer raised concerns about the condition of the facilities, stating that "the bathrooms were run down and there was no hot water in the showers." These are significant drawbacks that can severely impact the comfort and satisfaction of campers, regardless of their accommodation type (RV or tent). The lack of hot water in showers, in particular, is a basic amenity that many campers expect, especially at a branded campground like KOA. The description of the bathrooms as "run down" also suggests a potential need for maintenance and upgrades. For local users prioritizing clean and functional facilities as part of their "camping near me" experience, these comments are important to consider.
Considering these two contrasting reviews, local users interested in the Grand Island KOA Journey should weigh the positive feedback regarding cleanliness and friendly staff against the negative comments about the overall atmosphere and the condition of the bathrooms, particularly the lack of hot water. It's possible that the experiences vary depending on the specific site location within the campground, the time of year, or the individual expectations of the campers.
As a KOA Journey campground, it typically aims to provide a comfortable stop for travelers with amenities such as pull-through RV sites, clean restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and often some recreational options. However, the recent review suggests that the actual condition and quality of some of these amenities at the Grand Island KOA Journey may not consistently meet the expected KOA standards. Local users accustomed to the general reputation of KOA campgrounds might find this feedback surprising and should perhaps inquire specifically about the current status of the bathroom and shower facilities before making a reservation.
To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Grand Island KOA Journey, local users could also explore other online reviews from various platforms to see if a consistent pattern emerges regarding the campground's strengths and weaknesses. Checking recent reviews would be particularly helpful to get the most up-to-date information on the current conditions and services.
When considering "camping near me," local users often look for a balance of convenience, amenities, and a pleasant environment. The Grand Island KOA Journey's location in Doniphan, NE, might be convenient for those in the area or passing through. The positive mention of friendly and helpful staff is definitely a plus. However, the concerns raised about the "trailer park" feel and the condition of the bathrooms, especially the lack of hot water, are significant factors that could deter some campers.
Potential promotional aspects that KOA campgrounds often highlight include their family-friendly atmosphere, pet-friendly policies, and various amenities. Local users interested in these aspects should verify if the Grand Island KOA Journey currently offers and maintains these features to a satisfactory level, given the recent negative feedback on some basic facilities.
In conclusion, the Grand Island KOA Journey in Doniphan, NE, presents a mixed picture for local users seeking "camping near me." While some guests have experienced a clean campground with friendly and helpful staff, others have been disappointed by what they perceived as a "trailer park" atmosphere and significant issues with the bathroom facilities, including the lack of hot water. Local residents considering this KOA should weigh these contrasting experiences and potentially seek more recent and comprehensive reviews or contact the campground directly to inquire about the current status of their amenities and the overall environment before making a booking decision.

Apr 10, 2025 · W BThis was the first time we were disappointed in a KOA. It felt more like a trailer park. Obviously, most of the trailers were more permanent. The bathrooms were run down and there was no hot water in the showers.
Apr 08, 2025 · Lori ShannonWe stayed at this KOA for a little over a week, had to unexpectedly leave because of a work layoff. We asked for a refund for time not stayed… staff refused, very inconsiderate of our situation, so now we are out $800 for only staying a week and a half. We have stayed at many KOAs around the country and all of them have been very accommodating with our stays and if we needed to leave early we were able to be refunded accordingly. I wouldn’t stay here again.
Nov 25, 2024 · Liz KeelingPretty nice KOA! Lots of shady spots. The pool was already closed for the season, but I enjoyed walking my dog around the grounds. Nice views of the surrounding corn fields. Really friendly staff as well! Showers were good as well.
Sep 20, 2024 · Nicki BondsWe stayed here overnight while traveling across Nebraska. The campground is just south of I-80: soon after the pavement road changes over to gravel, you'll make a left turn and then a right turn to drive up to the office. All of the roads and pads in the campground are gravel, while the sites have grass lawns. Most of the sites are pull-throughs with full-hooks, though there are a few water and electric sites. Some sites have shade trees while others do not. Some of the roads are narrow and meant for one-way travel, but they were clearly marked on the map and maneuvering our large rig was not a problem. We stayed in site 83 in the southern section of the park (beyond the office): the site more than long enough for our 37-foot fifth wheel and 21-foot truck and pretty much level side-to-side, but the overall site was narrow, leaving us pretty close to the neighboring rig. The hookups were located near the center of the site. The campground has many of the typical amenities found at KOAs: a small convenience store and laundry room within the office building, along with bathrooms and showers, a jump pad and playground for the kids, a swimming pool, and a horseshoe pit. There are two other bathhouses located in the center of the campground with individual rooms, and a dump station on the north end of the park along the exit road. One of the two enclosed dog parks (the one with an airlock gate) is located near the dump station, while the other larger dog park with a single gate is located near the southwest corner. There is also a lot of open grass on the west and south sides of the campgrounds for walking dogs. There are no other commercial properties besides the campground at this exit on I-80, but fuel and food options can be found a few minutes west in Grand Island. The campground does serve Hunt Brothers Pizza, which you can have delivered to your rig. I will note that they don't sell propane at this KOA.In terms of cell service, the best speed I saw on my Verizon Jetpack with MIMO antenna was 58 Mbps down and 23 up, and we had no trouble streaming video. The best speed I saw on my AT&T smartphone with 5G was 49 Mbps down and 5 up. There is WiFi at the campground, but I was unable to connect to it for some reason, despite only being two sites away from an obvious WiFi tower. We would stay here again if we were in the area.
