Would be a wonderful campground except for the noisy highway that goes right next to it. Large logging and dump trucks rolling all night long. Had to wear ear plugs to sleep. Other than that there is a nice swimming hole and great hikes through ancient giant redwoods. Campsites are roomy and clean. Coin op showers. - Doug B

Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground Introduce

For local users searching for "Camping Near Me" in Northern California, Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground in Carlotta, CA, offers a compelling blend of majestic ancient redwoods and refreshing river recreation. Part of Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, this campground provides a unique opportunity to camp among some of the region's most iconic trees, offering a serene natural setting perfect for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. While it boasts many advantages, an objective introduction also acknowledges aspects that might impact a stay, such as proximity to a highway.

The environment at Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground is undeniably stunning. The campsites are set within a beautiful grove of towering coastal redwoods, some of which are ancient old-growth trees. This provides a deeply immersive forest experience, with the natural shade and grandeur of the redwoods creating a captivating atmosphere. The Van Duzen River flows adjacent to the campground, offering picturesque river frontage for several sites. A significant feature is the presence of a "nice swimming hole" where the Van Duzen River and Grizzly Creek merge, a popular spot for cooling off during warmer months. The air is often cool and fresh, even on hot days, thanks to the dense tree canopy. The park encompasses 430 acres, providing a sense of seclusion and wilderness, despite its relatively small size for a redwood park. Visitors frequently laud the "beautiful views" and the chance to be surrounded by "ancient giant redwoods." However, it is an important aspect of the environment that State Route 36, a highway, runs right next to the campground. This means that noise from "large logging and dump trucks rolling all night long" can be a factor, as noted by past campers. While the scenery is magnificent, some level of road noise should be anticipated, and earplugs have been recommended by some guests for sleeping.

In terms of services, Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground is well-equipped to provide a comfortable camping experience. It features 30 single-family campsites, typically open seasonally, usually from Memorial Day to Labor Day, though the day-use area is open year-round. Each spacious and clean campsite includes a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill, perfect for enjoying outdoor meals and evening campfires. The campground offers flush toilets, which are a welcome convenience, and coin-operated showers, ensuring campers can refresh themselves after a day of exploration. Drinking water is available throughout the campground. Bear-resistant food lockers are provided at each site, a necessary amenity as the park is in active bear country, and proper food storage is essential for safety. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the campsites, the presence of showers and flush toilets elevates the comfort level compared to more primitive campgrounds. The park also features a visitor center with exhibits and a bookstore, offering educational insights into the redwoods and local wildlife. During the summer season, interpretive activities such as nature walks, Junior Ranger programs for children, and evening campfire programs are often held, providing engaging experiences for all ages.

Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground offers a variety of features and activities. Its primary draw is undoubtedly the ancient redwood groves. The park boasts 4.5 miles of hiking trails that wind through these magnificent trees, offering a chance for quiet contemplation and stunning photography. The Cheatham Grove, known for its majestic redwoods, is accessible via a 0.7-mile loop trail, parts of which are accessible. Beyond hiking, the Van Duzen River is a focal point for recreation. In addition to the popular swimming hole, the river is suitable for canoeing, kayaking, and rafting, especially when water levels are appropriate. Fishing for salmon and steelhead is possible in the Van Duzen River during the fall and winter, though fishing is often closed in summer due to low water flow, and a California fishing license is required. The campground's paved loop is safe for children to ride bikes, contributing to its family-friendly appeal. While the park is relatively small in acreage, its density of big trees and fewer visitors compared to some other redwood parks provide a strong sense of seclusion within its groves.

For promotional and practical information, planning ahead for a stay at Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground is advisable. Campsites are generally priced around $35 per night, with an additional $8 reservation fee if booked online. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during the summer months and on weekends, as the limited number of sites can fill up quickly. Reservations can often be made up to six months in advance through the California State Parks reservation system (ReserveCalifornia.com). The park is located at 16718 CA-36, Carlotta, CA 95528, approximately 17 miles east of Highway 101 on Highway 36. While the address is Carlotta, it's about 20 miles southeast of Eureka. The maximum length for RVs and trailers is generally advised as 24 feet due to road and campsite size limitations, although some sources mention up to 30 feet may be accommodated. Pets are allowed in the campground and on paved roads, but must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and confined to a tent or vehicle at night; pets are generally not allowed on trails. The park operates a day-use area that is open year-round from 8 a.m. to sunset, with a day-use parking fee. Visitors should check the California State Parks website or call the park directly (707-777-3683) for the most current information regarding operating hours, fees, and any restrictions or alerts, especially concerning fire bans or road conditions. Despite the highway noise, many visitors find the trade-off of camping among the magnificent redwoods and having access to the river's recreational opportunities to be well worth it, making Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground a memorable destination for those seeking an authentic Northern California redwood experience.
