Redwood Area Camp Introduce
For those seeking a deeply spiritual and communal camping experience within the majestic embrace of the California redwoods, Redwood Area Camp stands out as a unique destination under the "Camping Near Me" category. Located at 2437 Dyerville Loop Rd, Redcrest, CA 95569, this is not a public campground in the traditional sense, but rather a private camp primarily hosting an annual Christian camp meeting, making it a special retreat for spiritual refreshment and fellowship.
Redwood Area Camp is set in a truly "beautiful place" surrounded by the iconic, towering redwood trees of southern Humboldt County. This natural grandeur provides a serene and awe-inspiring backdrop, ideal for reflection and worship. The camp's location immerses visitors in a lush, forested environment, offering ample shade and a sense of peaceful seclusion. The "luxury of fog-cooled mornings and hot afternoons" contributes to a refreshing experience, characteristic of the redwood region.
A significant environmental feature is its proximity to the Eel River, with one of the six rivers in the area bordering the camp. This provides opportunities for connecting with nature beyond the immediate campsite. The overall atmosphere is described as "peaceful" and conducive to spiritual renewal, allowing attendees to "worship God in nature." It has been a beloved destination for thousands of campers dating back to the 1950s, a testament to its enduring appeal and natural beauty.
The camp spans approximately 100 acres and can accommodate a large number of campers, with around 1700 campsites across the property. Despite its capacity, the natural setting allows for a sense of connection with the environment. However, as it is in a flood plain of the Eel River, maintenance is a significant undertaking, often requiring volunteer efforts to keep the camp in pristine condition.
Redwood Area Camp offers a blend of essential amenities designed to support a comfortable, albeit focused, camping experience. While it is "basically a dry camp experience," meaning electrical hookups for RVs might be limited or partial, there are crucial facilities that enhance comfort and convenience.
Key amenities include:
- Flush Toilets and Showers: This is a significant comfort for campers, providing modern restroom facilities often not found in more primitive settings.
- Water Access: Each campsite "does have access to water," which is vital for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene.
- Campsites: The camp can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. While it is a "dry camp" in terms of hookups, the presence of these facilities ensures a manageable stay.
- Support Services: During the annual camp meeting, the camp provides comprehensive services including a Nurses' Station for medical needs, a Registration trailer for check-ins, and a Headquarters for general assistance. They also offer services like battery recharges and pumper truck sign-ups for RVs, indicating a practical approach to managing a large number of campers.
The camp emphasizes safety, requiring fire extinguishers for every campsite and enforcing an eight-foot separation between all camping vehicles and tents for fire prevention. Roadways must be kept clear at all times. There is also an ABC Food and Book Sales store on-site during the camp meeting, offering convenience for attendees.
The defining feature of Redwood Area Camp is its role as a dedicated venue for a Christian camp meeting, primarily organized by the Northern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. This annual event, typically held at the end of July and extending into early August, is the focal point of the camp's operations.
Features that distinguish Redwood Area Camp include:
- Spiritual Programs: The camp hosts daily morning and evening meetings for attendees of all ages, covering various spiritual topics. There are specific programs for children, youth, young adults, and adults, often featuring guest speakers, music performers, and interactive learning experiences.
- Fellowship: The camp provides a unique opportunity for "fellowship with other believers" and a strong sense of community, with many attendees making it an annual tradition.
- Nature and Worship: The setting "in the Redwoods" is explicitly promoted as a place to "worship God in nature" and for "spiritual refreshment."
- Educational Offerings: Classes held by pastors are described as "awe-inspiring," with elaborately themed stages for children's learning.
- Volunteer Opportunities: Given its private nature and the need for maintenance, the camp actively seeks volunteers for various projects throughout the year, from wood cutting and repairs to general cleanup, fostering a strong sense of community involvement.
- Proximity to Eel River: While swimming in the river is not recommended due to high bacteria levels, its presence offers a natural boundary and visual appeal.
It is important to note that while the natural setting is beautiful, campers are advised to exercise caution regarding local wildlife, including mountain lions and deer ticks, and to be aware of poison oak, which is prevalent in the area.
Redwood Area Camp's primary promotional focus is on its annual Christian Camp Meeting. The official dates for the camp meeting are well-published, for example, July 27 – August 2, 2025. This indicates a structured, event-based operation rather than a general public campground open year-round for individual bookings outside of this specific event.
Key contact information:
- Phone: (707) 946-2452
- Email: redwoodareacamp.reservations@gmail.com (for reservations) or redwoodareacamp.director@gmail.com (for the Camp Director, Harry Salvini).
The camp's website and social media channels (e.g., Facebook) are used to disseminate information, camp schedules, and details for registration. Pre-registered campers may benefit from a "fast track" check-in process. A roster of checked-in campers is posted to help locate friends and family.
Rules and guidelines are in place to ensure a harmonious experience for all attendees. These include respecting Sabbath hours by minimizing camp setup on arrival during this time and adhering to an eight-person maximum per site. "No show" policies are also enforced, where unconfirmed attendance for two consecutive years may lead to a site being released.
Visitors frequently express their excitement and anticipation for the annual camp meeting, highlighting it as a "special time of year" and expressing intentions to return. This strong positive feedback underscores the camp's success in providing a meaningful spiritual experience in a beautiful natural setting. The camp is supported by donations, with checks made out to Redwood Area Camp, demonstrating its community-funded nature.
In summary, Redwood Area Camp is a distinctive "Camping Near Me" option for individuals and families seeking a Christian camp meeting experience in the breathtaking California redwoods. While it operates as a private venue primarily for its annual spiritual gathering, it offers essential amenities and a deeply peaceful environment for spiritual refreshment, fellowship, and worship amidst nature's grandeur. Prospective visitors should align their plans with the annual camp meeting schedule and be prepared for a focused, faith-based outdoor retreat.
