I helped build this campsite, landing was on east side almost to southern end, bit of a hill to scramble up, campsite is up trail to north, privy was further up trail to north( but may have been relocated by now) there was talk of putting a picnic table there but don't know if they did. Room for a few tents and hammocks. -1 star for the poor landing at time of construction, maybe a better one has been created by now. - Joe McCann

Hubbard Island Campsite Introduce

For local users in the Charlestown, NH area looking for a unique and potentially secluded "camping near me" experience, Hubbard Island Campsite, located at approximately 8JV2+QQ, Charlestown, NH 03603, USA, offers a primitive island camping opportunity. Access to this campsite is by water, providing a sense of isolation and a direct connection with nature. Based on the available review from someone who helped build the site, Hubbard Island Campsite has a specific layout and some features that prospective campers should be aware of.

The review indicates that the primary landing area, at least at the time of construction, was on the east side of the island, towards the southern end. From the landing, there was "a bit of a hill to scramble up" to reach the campsite itself, which was located further up a trail to the north. This suggests that accessing the camping area involves a short hike from the landing spot, which might be important for campers to consider when packing gear.

A privy (outhouse) was also located further up the trail to the north from the campsite, although the reviewer noted that its location "may have been relocated by now." This indicates that some basic sanitation facilities are available, albeit potentially in a primitive form. The reviewer also mentioned a discussion about placing a picnic table at the campsite but was unsure if this had been implemented.

In terms of capacity, the campsite offers "Room for a few tents and hammocks," suggesting it is a smaller, more intimate camping area suitable for small groups or individuals. This limited capacity likely contributes to the potential for a secluded experience.

The reviewer gave a -1 star rating due to the "poor landing at time of construction," expressing hope that a better landing area might have been created since then. This is a crucial piece of information for those planning to arrive by boat, as the ease of landing and unloading gear can significantly impact the initial experience.

Environment and Location:

Being an island campsite, the environment of Hubbard Island is inherently defined by its waterfront location. Charlestown, NH, is situated along the Connecticut River, which features several islands. Hubbard Island is likely one of these, offering campers the experience of being surrounded by water. Island camping often provides a unique perspective on the natural landscape and can offer a quieter environment away from more developed mainland areas.

The mention of a hill to scramble up and a trail leading to the north suggests some variation in the island's topography. This could mean potential for slightly elevated campsites with views or a more varied hiking experience within the small island. The presence of trees suitable for hammocks is also indicated.

Services and Amenities:

Based on the review, the known amenities at Hubbard Island Campsite include:

  • A landing area on the east side (condition potentially improved since construction).
  • A trail leading to the campsite.
  • A privy (composting or pit toilet), the location of which might have changed.
  • Potential for a picnic table (uncertain if installed).
  • Space for a few tents and hammocks.

The absence of mention of other facilities like water sources, fire pits, or designated cooking areas suggests that Hubbard Island Campsite likely offers a primitive camping experience. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing their own water, cooking equipment, and possibly portable toilet if the privy's condition or location is not suitable for their needs.

Features and Highlights:

  • Island Camping: A unique and potentially secluded experience on an island.
  • Limited Capacity: Room for a few tents and hammocks, ensuring a quieter setting.
  • Waterfront Access: Surrounded by water, likely offering opportunities for swimming, boating, or fishing (though not explicitly mentioned).
