I strongly urge anyone considering Getaway Mountain Campground to stay far away. Our experience here was nothing short of appalling. From the moment we checked in, the owners were extremely rude and unwelcoming. After staying for the weekend, we extended our stay due to the campground’s cleanliness, thinking it would be perfect for our family, including our three children with special needs and our service animals.Unfortunately, the owner’s behavior quickly escalated. One day, the man running the office drove by on his golf cart and began yelling and swearing at me, accusing us of not picking up after our dogs. I explained that we always clean up after them, but he refused to listen. We decided to leave for the weekend to avoid further conflict, but when we returned, we found piles of dog poop deliberately placed near our motorhome. Things worsened when one of our children, who is nonverbal, picked up a pile of the mess. When we addressed the issue with the office, the owner’s wife not only refused to acknowledge their behavior but also accused us of lying. The man’s hostile behavior escalated again, yelling and swearing at us in front of our children. He threatened to have us thrown out by the police, which he followed through on. The officers who responded could see that this was a personal issue and were baffled as to why they had been called. We were told to leave, but not before being denied a refund for the remaining days we had already paid for.To make matters worse, we’ve since learned that the owners of Getaway Mountain Campground have been actively calling around to other campgrounds, slandering our name. They falsely claim we don’t pick up after our dogs and that my husband chased the owner with a 2x4—an outright lie. The current campground we’re staying at informed us of this and has stated that they’ve seen no issues with us or our pets. In fact, the surrounding campers have no complaints, and the campground owner is willing to write a statement about the situation, including notifying the authorities of this baseless harassment. The entire experience left us feeling targeted and mistreated. We have traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and have never encountered anything like this. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this campground at all costs.Verdict: AVOID Getaway Mountain Campground. - Janeth Cyr

Getaway Mountain Campground Introduce

For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Ascutney, VT area, Getaway Mountain Campground, located at 3628 US-5, Ascutney, VT 05030, USA, has received some strongly negative feedback in recent reviews. It is crucial for prospective campers to be aware of these experiences when considering this location for their camping needs.

One extensive review details a deeply negative experience, urging others to "stay far away." The reviewer initially found the campground clean and decided to extend their stay with their family, including three children with special needs and service animals. However, their experience quickly deteriorated. They reported that the male owner was "extremely rude and unwelcoming" from the moment of check-in.

The situation escalated when the owner allegedly yelled and swore at the reviewer from a golf cart, accusing them of not cleaning up after their dogs, despite their claims of always doing so. To avoid further conflict, the family left for a weekend, but upon their return, they found "piles of dog poop deliberately placed near our motorhome." The situation became particularly distressing when one of their nonverbal children picked up the mess.

When this incident was brought to the attention of the office, the reviewer states that the owner's wife refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing and accused them of lying. Subsequently, the male owner's hostile behavior reportedly continued, with more yelling and swearing in front of the children. This culminated in the owner threatening to have them removed by the police, which he allegedly followed through on. The responding officers reportedly perceived the issue as a personal matter and were surprised by the call. The family was asked to leave and was allegedly denied a refund for the remaining days they had paid for.

Adding to their negative experience, the reviewer claims to have learned that the owners of Getaway Mountain Campground have been contacting other campgrounds to slander them, falsely accusing them of not picking up after their dogs and fabricating a story about the reviewer's husband chasing the owner with a 2x4. The reviewer mentioned that their current campground was aware of these alleged actions and had seen no issues with them or their pets, with the owner even willing to provide a statement about the situation.

The reviewer concluded by stating that the entire experience left them feeling targeted and mistreated, unlike anything they had encountered in their extensive travels across the U.S., and strongly recommended avoiding Getaway Mountain Campground.

Another brief review echoed a similarly negative sentiment, labeling Getaway Mountain Campground as the "Worst campground in 30k miles." This reviewer described it as "Rude, unfriendly and unsafe for kids," citing "Dog poop everywhere, and just plan dirty!!" They also explicitly stated they "would not recommend this place to anyone" and suggested "Running bear just up the road is a much friendlier campground."

Environment and Location:

While the reviews heavily focus on negative interactions, there is limited information provided about the physical environment of Getaway Mountain Campground. One reviewer initially noted the "campground’s cleanliness" as a reason for extending their stay, which suggests that at some point, the cleanliness was perceived positively, though this later changed. The location in Ascutney, VT, implies a setting within a potentially scenic mountainous region, but the specific natural features of the campground itself (e.g., wooded areas, proximity to water, views) are not detailed in these reviews.

Services and Amenities:

The reviews do not provide a comprehensive list of services and amenities offered at Getaway Mountain Campground. The initial mention of cleanliness suggests that basic upkeep might have been intended, at least initially. However, the later comment about "just plan dirty!!" contradicts this. The presence of RV sites is implied by the reviewer staying in a motorhome. Beyond this, information about hookups, restrooms, showers, recreational facilities, or other amenities is not available in these strongly negative accounts.

Features and Highlights:

Given the overwhelmingly negative nature of the provided reviews, it is difficult to identify positive features or highlights of Getaway Mountain Campground based solely on this feedback. The initial positive impression of cleanliness by one reviewer was quickly overshadowed by negative interactions and alleged issues with pet waste and owner behavior.

Promotional Information:

Based on the provided customer reviews, it would be imprudent to offer any positive promotional information for Getaway Mountain Campground. The experiences shared paint a picture of rude and unwelcoming owners, alleged harassment, and concerns about cleanliness. Local users seeking "camping near me" should carefully consider these recent and detailed negative accounts.

Prospective campers might want to look for more recent reviews from other sources to get a broader perspective or to see if there have been any changes in management or conditions. However, based on the information currently available, there are significant concerns raised by multiple reviewers.

In conclusion, the recent feedback for Getaway Mountain Campground in Ascutney, VT, is overwhelmingly negative, citing issues with owner behavior, cleanliness, and alleged harassment. Local users looking for "camping near me" are strongly advised to read these reviews carefully and consider alternative campgrounds in the area before making a decision. The provided information does not support a positive introduction or any promotional messaging for this campground at this time.
