Hunter Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that combines stunning natural beauty with excellent facilities for horseback riding, Hunter Campground near Buffalo, Wyoming, presents an exceptional option. Situated along Hunter Creek Road, this campground is praised for its picturesque setting, well-maintained horse pens, and access to a variety of trails suitable for both novice and experienced riders. While one review notes the trail map's limitations, the freedom to explore the area in any direction appears to be a significant draw. With reports of breathtaking wildflowers, abundant wildlife sightings, and a helpful camp host, Hunter Campground offers a memorable outdoor adventure for individuals and groups alike.
Environment and Scenery:
Hunter Campground is located in a "beautiful area," as highlighted by multiple visitors. The landscape surrounding the campground is characterized by its natural charm, with one reviewer specifically mentioning the "breathtaking" wildflowers during their visit. The views from the campsites are described as "amazing," suggesting a scenic environment that enhances the overall camping experience. The terrain likely includes a mix of meadows, forests, and potentially hilly areas, given the access to varied hiking and riding trails. The elevation might contribute to variable weather conditions, as evidenced by a report of snow in late September, indicating that campers should be prepared for potential temperature fluctuations, especially during shoulder seasons.
The presence of Hunter Creek Road suggests the campground might be situated near a creek, potentially adding to the scenic beauty and providing a water source for horses (as indicated by the hoses at the corrals). The ability to spot numerous moose further underscores the rich wildlife in the area, making it an attractive destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The overall environment appears to be one of natural abundance and tranquility, offering a peaceful escape into the Wyoming wilderness.
Services and Amenities:
A significant amenity at Hunter Campground is the provision of "good pens for horses." One reviewer specifically mentioned the "great corrals" and the convenience of having hoses available to water their horses. This makes the campground particularly well-suited for equestrians looking for a camping destination that caters to their needs. The availability of secure and well-equipped horse pens is a key feature that sets Hunter Campground apart for those traveling with horses.
The reviews also highlight the exceptional service provided by the camp hosts, Stan and Libby. They are described as "great" and "very helpful," checking in with campers every morning and evening. Libby's assistance in recommending suitable trails for a group with varying experience levels demonstrates a high level of helpfulness and local knowledge. The presence of such attentive and knowledgeable camp hosts can greatly enhance the visitor experience, providing guidance and ensuring a pleasant stay.
While specific details about other amenities such as restrooms, water sources, or fire rings are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, the positive feedback regarding the camp hosts suggests that essential services are likely in place and well-maintained. One practical piece of information is that cell service was reportedly available by walking up the hill to the east of the campground, which can be important for those needing to stay connected.
Features and Activities:
The primary activities at Hunter Campground revolve around exploring the beautiful surrounding area through horseback riding and hiking. The reviews mention a "good variety of trails for inexperienced and advanced riders," indicating that the trail system caters to a wide range of skill levels. One highly recommended ride for adults is the "7 Brothers" trail, described as a "must do." The freedom to "ride anywhere and any direction" (despite the uselessness of the trail map) suggests a vast and inviting landscape for exploration on horseback.
For hikers, the same trail system likely offers opportunities to discover the scenic beauty of the area on foot. The breathtaking wildflowers mentioned by one reviewer would be a significant attraction for hikers and nature enthusiasts during the blooming season. The chance to spot numerous moose adds an element of excitement and wildlife viewing to any outing from the campground.
The campground's location in a "beautiful area" naturally lends itself to other outdoor activities such as nature photography, wildlife observation, and simply enjoying the peace and tranquility of the Wyoming wilderness. The potential for variable weather, including colder temperatures and even snow in September, suggests that visitors should come prepared for changing conditions, allowing them to enjoy the beauty of the area regardless of the weather.

Hunter Campground Reviews
Beautiful area, Nice campground, good pens for horses, useless trail map, but you can ride anywhere and any direction. Snowed on Sept 20,2022 and cold that day.
Oct 11, 2021 · C MartinBeautiful week! Wildflowers were breath taking. Great camp host (Stan and Libby) that checked in every morning and evening. Libby was very helpful with helping us pick suitable trails. We had 20 people ranging from 1 to 63. Good variety of trails for inexperienced and advanced riders. Adults went to 7 Brothers. A must do ride. Great corrals and loved having hoses to water our horses. We were able to get cell service by walking up the hill to the east. Was a bit windy our first 2 days but the view from campsite is amazing! We spotted numerous Moose.
