Deer Park Campground

Ten Sleep, WY 82442, USA

4.0
Very lovely spot in the woods. Would have been perfectly quiet if the neighbors hadn't used a generator all day. There is plenty if deer in the meadows, squirrels with pinecone collections everywhere. Be careful they launch them and they hurt when they hit you. We had spot #3 there is lots of sap from trees. The terrain is nice in the spot but the tree roots are showing and in many spots the ground is uneven. Behind our site there was a small hike up a hill where someone built a log fort. We cleaned up a lot of the trash left prior and left our site best it could be, most of it pictured is when we packed up how we left it. Very close to the bathrooms. all Gravel roads. easy outhouse access even for handicap. For those who enjoy the park, you are not alone. Please be courteous of your generators as they are loud next to the road running late. Some folk sleep at 8/9pm to get early starts. Out neighbors were unfortunately not very neighborly running more than 1 campsite with a generator. But I won't let that take away what these sites have to hold for the next person. I hope a host is able to take over this campground soon as many at night seem to think the rules don't apply to them when nobody is looking. Dogs were not leashed and nobody cleaned up after them when they ran around pooping in our site and marking everything. - Christina Currie

Deer Park Campground Introduce

Nestled in a charming wooded setting near Ten Sleep, Wyoming, Deer Park Campground offers a rustic and relatively private camping experience within reach of the stunning Bighorn National Forest. For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate a natural environment with opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation, Deer Park Campground presents a viable option. While some aspects might require consideration, the campground's spacing and access to outdoor activities make it a noteworthy choice for those seeking a more secluded camping experience.

Environment and Scenery:

Deer Park Campground is situated in a "very lovely spot in the woods," as described by a visitor, suggesting an immersive natural environment. The presence of meadows nearby indicates potential for open views and wildlife sightings. The campground is home to a significant deer population, offering frequent opportunities to observe these graceful animals in their natural habitat. Additionally, squirrels are abundant, adding to the woodland charm, although visitors should be mindful of their tendency to playfully (and sometimes forcefully) launch pinecones. The terrain within individual campsites can vary, with some areas exhibiting tree roots and uneven ground, which is typical of a natural forest setting. Gravel roads provide access throughout the campground.

The campsites are noted for being "widely spaced," with brush around several of them, enhancing privacy between camping parties. This feature contributes to a more secluded and intimate camping experience, allowing visitors to feel more immersed in the natural surroundings. The overall ambiance is generally peaceful, although, as noted in reviews, occasional noise from neighboring campers' generators can disrupt the tranquility. Being aware of potential sap from trees, especially at certain campsites like #3, is also advisable for campers to take necessary precautions.

Services and Amenities:

Deer Park Campground offers basic but functional amenities. The facilities include separate male and female vault toilets, providing essential sanitation. Water is available via a hand pump, which is reported to provide "good water." It's important for campers to be prepared for these more rustic facilities compared to campgrounds with flush toilets and running water at each site. The easy access to the outhouses, even for individuals with disabilities, is a positive aspect of the campground's layout.

The reviews mention the absence of a campground host at the time of some visits, which unfortunately led to some issues with noise and adherence to campground etiquette. The potential for a host to be present in the future could significantly improve the overall experience by ensuring rules are respected. The campground's popularity is evident from reports of it being full or nearly full in late August, indicating its appeal despite the basic amenities.

Features and Activities:

A significant advantage of Deer Park Campground is its proximity to excellent hiking trails. The Highline Trailhead is located a short walk up the road from the campground, providing access to potentially scenic hikes and opportunities to spot wildlife, including moose, as reported by a visitor. Furthermore, the West Tensleep Trailhead is just a short drive away, offering even more extensive hiking options within the Bighorn National Forest. This makes Deer Park Campground a convenient basecamp for those interested in exploring the area's natural beauty on foot.

Wildlife viewing is another key feature of this campground. The frequent presence of deer in the meadows surrounding the campsites offers delightful opportunities for observation and photography. While the squirrels add to the natural charm, campers should be aware of their playful antics with pinecones. The overall setting in the woods provides a chance to connect with nature and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the forest (when not interrupted by generators).

The campground's location within Bighorn National Forest also provides access to the broader recreational opportunities available in the area, such as scenic drives, fishing in nearby streams or lakes (though not specifically mentioned for the immediate campground), and exploring other parts of the vast national forest.
