West Tensleep Lake Campground Introduce
Nestled high in the Bighorn National Forest near Buffalo, Wyoming, West Tensleep Lake Campground offers a stunning alpine camping experience centered around the pristine and icy cold waters of West Tensleep Lake. For local users seeking an unforgettable "camping near me" destination, this campground promises breathtaking scenery, a variety of recreational activities, and well-regarded facilities. While the journey to this elevated location at approximately 9000 feet may require some effort, the overwhelming consensus from visitors is that the reward is well worth the trek.
Environment and Scenery:
West Tensleep Lake Campground is situated in a location described by visitors as "one of the most beautiful places" they have ever been. The centerpiece is the clear and cold West Tensleep Lake, which provides a stunning visual focal point and opportunities for various water-based activities. The campground is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Bighorn National Forest, characterized by potentially rugged terrain, dense forests, and the expansive wilderness of the Cloud Peak Wilderness area, which is directly accessible from the lake. The campsites themselves are described as large, with the unique feature of backing directly onto the forest, providing a sense of almost unlimited space and immersion in nature. This open-backed design enhances the feeling of being truly connected to the surrounding environment.
The high altitude of the campground contributes to a distinct climate. Visitors should be prepared for colder temperatures, especially at night, even during the summer months. The weather can also be variable, with the possibility of both sunny days and periods of rain or sprinkles. The presence of fire rings at each campsite, coupled with the availability of dead wood in the surrounding forest (with a little searching), allows campers to enjoy campfires, adding to the quintessential camping experience. The overall environment is one of natural beauty and tranquility, offering a significant escape from more developed and potentially crowded campgrounds.
Services and Amenities:
One of the consistently praised aspects of West Tensleep Lake Campground is the excellent camp host. According to multiple reviews, the host is diligent in maintaining the cleanliness and stocking of the bathrooms. Visitors have noted that even though the bathrooms are of the outhouse (vault toilet) type, they are exceptionally clean and well-maintained, often cited as some of the best rudimentary facilities campers have encountered. This attention to hygiene contributes significantly to a positive camping experience.
While not explicitly stated, the presence of a camp host often implies some level of oversight and assistance for campers. The availability of fire rings at each site suggests that campfires are permitted, likely with adherence to national forest regulations regarding fire safety. The mention of large campsites indicates ample space for setting up tents or parking recreational vehicles, although not all sites may be suitable for larger campers. The availability of potable water is not directly mentioned in the reviews, so campers should come prepared with their own water or a means to purify water from the lake or other natural sources if necessary.
Features and Activities:
West Tensleep Lake itself is a major feature of the campground, offering opportunities for a variety of recreational activities. Visitors have enjoyed paddleboarding, fishing, swimming (though the lake is noted as being icy cold), and general "mucking about" in the lake and a nearby creek. The clear waters of the lake enhance the enjoyment of these activities and provide beautiful scenery.
For hiking enthusiasts, the direct access to the Cloud Peak Wilderness trail system from the lake is a significant advantage. This vast wilderness area offers numerous trails for day hikes and longer backpacking trips, allowing exploration of the rugged and stunning landscapes of the Bighorn Mountains. The proximity to these trails makes West Tensleep Lake Campground an ideal basecamp for those looking to venture deeper into the wilderness.
Wildlife viewing is another prominent feature of the area. Campers have reported seeing plenty of moose and some elk. While bears were not encountered by the reviewers, the Bighorn National Forest is bear country, so visitors should be aware of and adhere to proper food storage and safety guidelines. The natural environment surrounding the lake and campground provides ample opportunities to observe the local fauna in their natural habitat.
The generally quiet atmosphere of the campground, especially at night, contributes to a relaxing and enjoyable stay. While some daytime generator use by campers (including those with travel trailers) was noted, the nights are reported to be peaceful. The open-backed campsites further enhance the feeling of being immersed in the tranquility of the forest.

West Tensleep Lake Campground Reviews
Our family just spent five days here camping in our travel trailer. It was a bit of a trek to get up here with our van but it was well worth it. This had to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever been! The lake is icy cold and clear. We enjoyed many afternoons of paddleboarding, fishing, swimming, and general mucking about in the creek and on the lake itself. We saw plenty of moose, some elk, and no bears thankfully. As others have mentioned, the camp host is excellent! She kept the bathrooms clean and well stocked and every interaction we had with her was pleasant.
Aug 25, 2024 · Leah UdeGreat campground and the bathroom are open, clean, and were well maintained. In fact for rudimentary bathrooms (outhouse type) they were some of the best I have used. The campground is a nice fairly quiet spot, although everyone with a camper (including us) had a generator that they used for short time periods. The nights were nice and quiet though. The campsites are all large, but not every site would accommodate a camper. We were in site 6 and out 18ft camper fit okay. I love the fact that all the sites are open in the back to the forest. It gave you almost unlimited camping space. The fire rings were great, and with just a little bit of searching there is lots of dead wood in the forest. It is cold at 9000 ft, especially at night, and it sprinkled / rained all three days we were there,m. We also had some nice weather too. Come prepared for the cold though. The Cloud Peak Wilderness trail system takes off from this lake, so there are some great day hikes in the area as well.
Jun 24, 2018 · Mike SechlerIn our 7 years of camping in our RV, this definitely was the best campground we ever stayed in. It's off the beaten path by about 6 miles, but well worth it. There are only 10 camping spots, and it is quiet. The lake is beautiful! Caught several trout from shore and we even ate them on the grill. Even saw a moose and her calf across the lake. The camp host Deb, was the best camp host I have ever encountered. She went above her duties to ensure we were well taken care of. I would love to return to this campground one day in the future.
Jul 06, 2024 · Gary PGreat campground! Remember to make reservations! The restrooms are very clean! I will return.
Jul 28, 2018 · Mike EckhardtIf you want to listen to ATVS all weekend. Do not go here. Honestly. Worst camping experience ever. There's never silence and people drive bay with their cars or AVTs all day. Wasn't worth paying 48 to reserve anyways. If your tent camping. Backpack up the trail and save your money. The place was clean and people were ok/nice but never silent to listen to nature until it's pitch black out.
