South Fork Campground Introduce
Looking for an unforgettable "camping near me" experience in the heart of Wyoming's stunning landscapes? South Fork Campground, located off US-16 in Buffalo, WY 82834, USA, might just be your perfect destination. Praised by visitors as a favorite campground, South Fork offers a serene environment with riverside campsites, abundant natural beauty, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you're a solo traveler, a family with young children, or a senior seeking a peaceful getaway, South Fork Campground appears to cater to a wide range of camping enthusiasts.
The environment of South Fork Campground is consistently highlighted as a major draw. Situated near a gently flowing river, the sound of the water provides a soothing natural soundtrack 24 hours a day. Reviewers specifically mention that the river is "not deep and crazy," making it a comfortable and safe environment even for families with small children. The campsites are described as being nestled among "trees and shade everywhere," offering a cool and pleasant atmosphere, especially during warmer months. The spaciousness of the sites is also noteworthy, allowing for a sense of privacy where you can "see your neighbors but not hear them." For nature lovers, the campground is a haven. Mule deer are reported to frequent the area every morning, and even moose sightings are not uncommon. Additionally, an "abundance of hummingbirds" provides delightful entertainment for campers.
The services and features at South Fork Campground contribute significantly to the positive experiences reported by visitors. The restrooms are consistently described as "very clean" and even "smelled good," a testament to the campground's maintenance. The well water is also praised for its amazing taste. For those looking to explore the surroundings, the campground boasts "great hiking trails" located at both the top and bottom of the camping area. One particularly mentioned trail leads through "wildflowers and lush evergreen forests" to the Tie Hack Reservoir, a mostly level walk of about 25 minutes each way. This provides an excellent opportunity for scenic hikes and enjoying the natural beauty of the Bighorn National Forest. Accessibility is also considered, with at least one site (#8) noted as "wheelchair friendly." Water is available at two sources within the campground, although visitors should be prepared to pump it themselves.
While South Fork Campground offers a fantastic natural experience, it's important to note a few logistical considerations. One significant point is the lack of cell service within the campground itself. However, a signal can be obtained by driving "a few minutes toward town." Another point to be aware of is that there is no RV dump station on-site. For this service, campers can utilize the Cenex in town or a National Forest dump site located approximately 18 miles west of the campground on highway 16, both of which are reported to be free. Across the road from the campground, there is a "small lodge restaurant" offering good food and a gift shop, providing a convenient option for meals or souvenirs.
The campground hosts are consistently commended for their exceptional service. Debby is described as "great," offering a warm welcome and brief interaction before allowing guests to enjoy their privacy. Sharon, another host mentioned by a long-term visitor, is also praised as "great" and "always willing to be of help." This friendly and helpful presence of the campground hosts significantly enhances the overall camping experience, making guests feel welcome and supported.
In terms of promotional information, one significant detail is the availability of a discount for seniors. One reviewer mentioned paying "$8.50 a night with our Senior Pass," indicating that this campground participates in the Senior Pass program, offering substantial savings for eligible visitors. This makes South Fork Campground an particularly attractive and affordable option for senior citizens looking for a beautiful and peaceful camping destination.
For local users searching for "camping near me," South Fork Campground offers an exceptional opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Wyoming. Its riverside location, shaded campsites, and abundant wildlife provide a tranquil and picturesque setting. The availability of hiking trails directly from the campground caters to those who enjoy exploring the outdoors on foot. The clean facilities and the welcoming presence of the campground hosts further enhance the appeal. Moreover, the potential for savings with a Senior Pass makes it an even more attractive option for older campers in the area.
To experience the wonders of South Fork Campground, you can contact them by phone at (406) 587-9054 or mobile phone at +1 406-587-9054. Calling ahead may be useful for checking availability, especially during peak seasons, and for any specific inquiries you might have. While online booking platforms are not mentioned in the reviews, contacting the provided phone numbers is a direct way to secure your spot at this highly recommended campground.
In conclusion, South Fork Campground offers local users a truly remarkable "camping near me" experience. Its combination of a stunning natural environment – with the soothing river, shady trees, and frequent wildlife sightings – coupled with clean facilities and exceptional hospitality from the campground hosts, creates an ideal setting for a relaxing and memorable getaway. The convenience of nearby hiking trails and the potential for senior discounts further elevate its appeal. Despite the lack of cell service within the campground and the absence of an on-site RV dump, the overall positive reviews and the beauty of the location strongly suggest that South Fork Campground is a hidden gem worth discovering for your next camping adventure in Wyoming.

South Fork Campground Reviews
Probably my favorite Campground in years. Not a huge campground with only about 10 spots plus a handful of tent spots across a bridge. We had spot #2 and it was amazing: trees and shade everywhere, river running through nearby (not deep and crazy, so I would be comfortable if I had small kids there) so we heard the water 24 hours. The campsite was plenty large, so we could see our neighbors but not hear them. Bathrooms were very clean and smelled good, well water tasted amazing, great hiking trails at top and bottom of Campground, you name it. Oh, and the host Debby was great. She welcomed us and talked with us briefly, then left us alone and just gave a wave when we would see her around. Really nice lady. This whole place is awesome, can't wait to spend more time there. These mountains are as beautiful as any in the USA.
Aug 14, 2024 · Darrin TaylorWe stayed here for 10 nights in our 32 ft. Motorhome. We were at site #8 which is the best sight in the camp. The best spot on the beautiful creek. There were mule deer there every morning and a moose one day. There was an abundance of hummingbirds which were so fun to watch. There is plenty is hiking right there. There is a nice trail through wildflowers and lush evergreen forests to the Tie Hack Reservoir. It is about a 25 minute walk one way and mostly level. Our site was wheelchair friendly. There are two water sources but be ready to pump it! The restrooms were super clean. Sharon, the host, was great and always willing to be of help. We paid $8.50 a night with our Senior Pass. The one negative is that the is NO cell service. You can drive a few minutes toward town and get some signal. There is no RV dump there. You can go to Cenex in town or to the National Forest dump site located about 18 miles west of the campground on highway 16. These are both free. There is a small lodge restaurant across the road from the campground with good food and a gift shop. We camped with friends and family in a total of four sites. It was so beautiful. I was sad to leave. The mountains are glorious!
Aug 11, 2018 · Janet RachelI stayed here for the first time when I was less than ten years old, so I have an affinity for this place. I've stayed here many times since then.Update: I camped 🏕 here again 8/24/2022. There was an Inconsiderate slob running a generator most of the night. I had put my tent up in my usual spot. These RVers did not like that. They said that the spot that I was in was for RVers only. I said that this is a public place and that I was NOT going to move my tent 😒 😐 😑!Bring the kids...
Aug 26, 2022 · Miles WinslowWe took a camping loop of the western US, staying in half a dozen different campgrounds over the course of 2 weeks (Yellowstone, Tetons, Badlands of both ND and SD, etc.). South Fork was our favorite campsite of all - beautiful area, great sites, and a rushing stream to lull us all to sleep. Really nice little hiking trail behind the campsite too. Our biggest regret was not having more time to explore the area.
Jun 23, 2020 · Isaac LandrusLoved this place with our family, great fishing brook, lots to see and friendly ranger on site! Thank you for your hospitality. Big Horns National Park is the best kept secret :)
