KCL Campground Turnoff

Soda Lake Rd, Santa Margarita, CA 93453, USA

3.0
Surprising nice campground at the base of the hills & edge of a large valley. Clean with vault toilet, picnic benches, fire ring & horse corral. Good views, some nice spaces for walking. There’s a 16ish mile trail up to Caliente Mountain (which overlooks the campground) which starts from Shelby campground (7 miles down the road). Unfortunately there was a large group with generators running all night over the weekend. Not terrible but enough to be annoying when you come out for quiet & peace. Considering the remote location with no guns or ATV’s allowed it was busy with all sites full every night I was there. Wednesday-Monday.No cell coverage for Verizon at the campground but if you go down some dirt roads about 2 miles into the valley you can get a few bars. Also Soda Lake which is up the road a bit was worth a stop. - Jack Rondini

The environment at KCL Campground Turnoff is described as surprisingly nice, offering good views of the surrounding landscape. The campground is situated at the base of rolling hills and overlooks a vast valley, providing a picturesque backdrop for your camping trip. For those who enjoy walking and exploring, there are some pleasant spaces around the campground for leisurely strolls. Additionally, the proximity to the Caliente Range offers opportunities for more extensive hiking.

In terms of amenities, KCL Campground Turnoff provides basic but essential facilities for a comfortable stay. These include a clean vault toilet for sanitation, picnic benches at each site for convenient outdoor dining, and fire rings for campfires and cooking. For those traveling with horses, a notable feature is the presence of a horse corral, making it a suitable destination for equestrian campers. One review mentions a spigot but notes that there was no water access during their visit, so it is advisable to bring your own water supply.

Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to a 16-mile trail that leads up to Caliente Mountain, which overlooks the campground. The trailhead for this hike is located at Shelby Campground, approximately 7 miles down the road from KCL Campground Turnoff. This offers a significant opportunity for a day hike with rewarding panoramic views of the area. Additionally, a "great little hike" to the top of two hills directly behind KCL Campground Turnoff is mentioned, offering stunning views of the Caliente Range without requiring a longer drive.

KCL Campground Turnoff is a free campground, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious campers. Despite its remote location and lack of fees, reviews indicate that it can be quite popular, especially on weekends. One visitor noted that all sites were full every night they were there, from Wednesday to Monday. This suggests that arriving early, particularly on weekends, might be necessary to secure a spot.

The popularity of the campground was also highlighted by the presence of a large group with generators running throughout the night over a weekend. While this wasn't described as terrible, it was enough to be annoying for those seeking peace and quiet in a natural setting. This is a potential drawback to be aware of, as the level of noise from other campers can vary.

The remote location of KCL Campground Turnoff also means limited or no cell phone coverage. One reviewer specifically mentioned the lack of Verizon service at the campground. However, they noted that by traveling about 2 miles down some dirt roads into the valley, it was possible to get a few bars of service. This suggests that while you might be able to connect in an emergency or to check messages, reliable and consistent cell service should not be expected at the campground itself.

Another point of interest near KCL Campground Turnoff is Soda Lake, located a short drive up the road. One visitor recommended it as worth a stop, suggesting it might offer additional scenic or recreational opportunities in the area. Exploring local attractions like Soda Lake can enhance your camping experience.

Based on a visitor's estimation, KCL Campground Turnoff offers around 8 drive-in sites, with only 2-3 of these providing shade. Additionally, there are approximately 8-10 walk-in sites that require a short walk to access and offer no shade. All campsites are equipped with a fire pit and a pole with two hooks, which can be used for various purposes such as hanging lanterns or tethering dogs. Notably, one site was mentioned as having a stone table with a wheelchair spot, indicating some level of accessibility consideration.

The rules of the campground include a prohibition on guns and ATVs, which contributes to a potentially more peaceful and safe environment for all visitors, aside from the occasional generator noise. The fact that it was busy despite these restrictions suggests that the natural beauty and the availability of free camping are strong draws.
