13 miles to the campground is non pavement. It’s all gravel. I have RV Van I could not run more than 5 mph the unevenly gravel made it was to difficult to drive. If you have off road van it will be great. I turn around didn’t make it. I did not want my van to run to the extreme drive. - janine v

For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking "Camping Near Me" that offers a more rustic and cost-effective experience, Selby Campground in New Cuyama, California, presents an interesting option. Located off Selby Road in New Cuyama, CA 93254, USA, this campground provides basic amenities and a natural setting, particularly appealing during wildflower season. You can reach them at (661) 391-6000 or their mobile number, +1 661-391-6000, for any inquiries, although reservations may not be applicable given its nature.

The environment surrounding Selby Campground is described as green and pretty, especially during April when the wildflowers are in bloom. The campground offers views of the plains below, providing a scenic backdrop for your camping experience. However, it's crucial to be aware of the access to the campground. According to a recent visitor, the final 13 miles leading to the site are unpaved and consist entirely of gravel. This uneven gravel road may pose a significant challenge for certain types of vehicles, particularly RV vans that are not designed for off-road conditions. The reviewer with an RV van reported being unable to drive faster than 5 mph due to the difficult terrain and ultimately decided to turn around. Therefore, it is advisable to consider the suitability of your vehicle before attempting to reach Selby Campground. It seems more appropriate for off-road vehicles or those equipped to handle rough, unpaved roads.

Despite the challenging access, those who do make it to Selby Campground will find basic campsites equipped with a table and fire rings. These fundamental amenities cater to a more traditional and self-sufficient camping style. The campground also provides two pit toilet bathrooms, which have been noted to be very clean by at least one visitor. The availability of potable water is another essential service offered at Selby Campground, ensuring that campers have access to drinking water during their stay.

One of the unique features of Selby Campground is that the campsites are free. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers looking for a no-cost place to stay and enjoy nature. The popularity of free camping is evident in the fact that during the wildflower bloom in April, the sites were fully occupied even on a Wednesday night. This suggests that Selby Campground can be quite popular during peak seasons, particularly when the natural surroundings are at their most vibrant.

The informal nature of the campground is also highlighted by a visitor's observation that people were camping in spots that were not designated sites, and everyone was getting along harmoniously. This indicates a more communal and perhaps less regulated camping environment. However, it's important to be mindful of others and respect the natural surroundings, regardless of where you choose to set up camp.

The review also mentions that the campground is located at the end of a 5-mile dirt, dead-end road. This reinforces the information about the unpaved access and suggests that once you are on this road, the campground is the final destination. This remoteness can contribute to the peace and quiet of the location, but it also means that you should be well-prepared with all necessary supplies before heading in.

An important consideration for campers at Selby Campground is the presence of wildlife. One visitor explicitly advises locking up food and trash due to creatures being active at night. This is a standard precaution in many natural camping environments to prevent attracting animals to your campsite and to ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife. Proper food storage and waste disposal are essential practices to follow.

In summary, for local users exploring "Camping Near Me," Selby Campground offers a unique experience characterized by:

  • Free campsites, making it a budget-friendly option for camping in nature.
  • Basic amenities including a table and fire rings at each site.
  • Clean pit toilet bathrooms.
  • Potable water available for campers.
  • A green and pretty environment, especially during the wildflower bloom in April, with views of the plains.
  • A potentially popular location, especially during peak seasons like wildflower season.
  • A more informal camping atmosphere where people may camp in undesignated spots.
  • A remote location accessed via a challenging 13-mile unpaved gravel road, with the final 5 miles being a dirt, dead-end road, suggesting it is more suitable for off-road vehicles.
  • The presence of nocturnal wildlife, requiring campers to secure food and trash properly.

If you possess a vehicle capable of handling rough, unpaved roads and are seeking a free, basic camping experience in a natural setting with potentially beautiful wildflower displays and plains views, Selby Campground might be worth considering. However, it is crucial to be fully aware of the access conditions and the need to be self-sufficient and prepared for wildlife encounters. Contact them at (661) 391-6000 or +1 661-391-6000 for any specific questions you might have about the campground and its accessibility before planning your trip.
