Looking for a quintessential "camping near me" experience that combines the tranquility of nature with convenient access to the beach and a range of recreational activities? Consider Live Oak Campground, situated within the beautiful Edisto Island State Park at Edisto Island, SC 29438, USA. For local users and visitors alike, Live Oak Campground serves as the primary point of contact for checking into the State Park and offers a welcoming gateway to a memorable coastal camping adventure. You can reach them at (843) 869-2156 or +1 843-869-2156 for inquiries about reservations and availability.
Your First Stop for Edisto Island State Park Camping:
Live Oak Campground acts as the central check-in point for all camping within Edisto Island State Park. Upon arrival, visitors can expect to be greeted by friendly staff who efficiently handle reservations and provide necessary park passes. This initial positive interaction sets the tone for a pleasant stay within the park.
A Well-Stocked Camping Store On-Site:
A significant convenience offered by Live Oak Campground is its well-equipped store. This shop caters specifically to the needs of campers, providing a wide array of essential items. You can find a variety of food items suitable for camping meals, ensuring you don't have to venture far for basic provisions. Additionally, the store stocks plenty of camping accessories, ice to keep your coolers chilled, general camping needs, useful wares, and firewood for campfires. As one reviewer aptly notes, "If you may have forgotten something, chances are this little shop may have it inside," offering peace of mind and convenience for all campers.
Shady Campsites Amongst Mature Trees:
The Live Oak Campground itself is characterized by its mature trees, which provide ample shade for most of the campsites. This is a significant advantage, especially during the warm South Carolina summers, offering a cooler and more comfortable camping environment. The presence of "good vegetation growth between sites" also contributes to a sense of privacy and natural separation between camping areas, enhancing the overall camping experience.
Convenient Beach Access, Though Not Directly Adjacent:
While the Live Oak Campground is located approximately 0.7 miles from the beach, access is made easy for campers. Visitors can drive down to the designated beach camping area and utilize the parking facilities there. From the parking area, it is then described as "a very short walk to the beach," allowing campers to readily enjoy the sandy shores and ocean waves of Edisto Beach.
Potential Challenges for Larger Rigs:
Campers with larger recreational vehicles should be aware that the "interior road can get narrow and twisty." This necessitates caution when navigating the campground roads with bigger rigs to avoid any maneuvering difficulties or potential damage. It's advisable for those with large RVs to inquire specifically about site accessibility and road conditions when making reservations.
Varying Levels of Privacy Among Sites:
The layout of the Live Oak Campground includes some pull-through sites that are located on corners. These corner sites may have "limiting your privacy" due to their more exposed position within the campground. Campers who prioritize privacy might want to request specific site types when booking, if possible.
Essential Utilities at Campsites:
For added convenience, the campsites at Live Oak Campground are equipped with electric and water hookups. This is a significant amenity for RV campers and those who appreciate having these basic utilities available at their site. A dump station for RV waste is also conveniently located "across the street" from the campground area.
Contrasting Conditions at the Beach Loop:
It's important to note that the "beach loop" camping area within the State Park offers a different environment compared to Live Oak. The beach loop is described as having "little privacy" and most sites will experience "full sun all day." This stark contrast highlights the appeal of the shady, more private sites at Live Oak Campground for those who prefer a cooler and more secluded camping experience.
Extensive Recreational Trails and Educational Opportunities:
Beyond the camping and beach access, Edisto Island State Park, easily accessible from Live Oak Campground, boasts a network of "well marked hiking and biking trails." These trails provide opportunities for exploring the natural beauty of the island, its maritime forests, and potentially its salt marshes. Additionally, the park features an "Educational Learning Center," suggesting opportunities to learn about the local ecology, history, and wildlife of Edisto Island.
Access to Water-Based Activities:
For those interested in fishing and boating, the State Park offers a "fishing pier" and a "boat launch." These facilities provide access to the waters surrounding Edisto Island, whether for recreational fishing or for exploring the waterways by boat.
Explore the Nearby ACE Basin Nature Reserve:
Adding to the appeal of the location, one reviewer recommends visiting the nearby "Ace Basin nature reserve." The ACE Basin (Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers) is a significant ecological area known for its diverse habitats and wildlife. The reviewer specifically mentions a "hiking loop of just about 3 miles" within the reserve, offering another opportunity for outdoor exploration and nature appreciation in the vicinity of Live Oak Campground.

Live Oak Campground Reviews
This is where you go to first, when checking into the Edisto Island State Park. Every time we check in, there is always someone who is very nice to greet us and check our reservations and give us our passes. The store is well stocked with food items that you would need for camping and plenty of camping accessories, ice, needs, wares and wood. If you may have forgotten something, chances are this little shop may have it inside.

Feb 29, 2024 · Mark Schrimpfwent down hill. prices up. and no trash cans anywhere near bathrooms. when ask ..they said people put door poop in so that reason have to take personal stuff and dental l floss back to campsite. premium pricing less amenities..
Nov 09, 2024 · Kirk LungNice camp area at Edisto Beach State Park. Spaces are mostly shaded and RVs have electric and water, but no sewer connections. There is a dump station across the road from the Live Oak entrance. You need to bring your own fresh water for drinking and cooking, the water is too salty. The trails are nice.
May 16, 2019 · Brenda Harrington-IrelandThis was a quiet campground (Live Oak) located with a handful of sites right on the marsh. It was centrally located to Edisto beach as well as a piece of history at Driftwood Beach. The campground itself offers large sites as well as some tighter sites. In the campground itself—there isn’t much for children to do, but we made the best of it. The state park does offer activities at the Learning Center, but you do need to drive there. The outside of the bathhouse looked presentable, but we never went inside. There is small camp store and the campground didn’t appear to offer WiFi.There was a lot of garbage by the dumpsters and 1 dump station made for a wait, but they do look like they are in the process of adding to the dump station. The campground has beautiful Oak Trees that are admirable and provide plenty of shade!
