Main Brothers Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a conveniently located and well-maintained campground in Southern Illinois, particularly those interested in exploring the Tunnel Hill State Trail or venturing into the Shawnee National Forest, Main Brothers Campground, situated at 164-224 S Franklin St, Karnak, IL 62956, USA, offers a solid option within the "camping near me" category. Reachable by phone at (618) 634-9311 or +1 618-634-9311, this small but functional campground provides essential amenities, easy access to local attractions, and a welcoming atmosphere for both RV and tent campers.
The environment surrounding Main Brothers Campground offers a blend of accessibility to recreational activities and proximity to basic conveniences. Its location at the southern end of the Tunnel Hill State Trail is a significant advantage for cyclists and hikers looking to explore this extensive "Rail to Trail" conversion, which spans approximately 45-50 miles one way. Campers can easily access the trail directly from the campground, making it an ideal base for multi-day biking or hiking excursions. Furthermore, the campground's proximity to a Dollar General store, just around the corner, provides convenient access to essential supplies and groceries. While dining establishments within easy walking or biking distance from the campground may be limited, the convenience of the nearby store adds to the practicality of the location. The campground itself is described as being on a fairly flat area, making it easier for parking and setting up camp. A small nature trail attached to the campground offers a limited opportunity for a quick nature walk, and the nearby Shawnee National Forest presents vast possibilities for outdoor adventures, making Main Brothers a good stopping point for those planning to explore the region.
Main Brothers Campground offers a range of services and features to accommodate both RV and tent campers. For RVs, the campground provides water hookups, 30 amp electrical service (with a mention of potential 50 amp service as well), and sewer hookups at the sites. The parking areas are fairly flat, making it easier to back into a spot, although pull-through sites are not available. A dump station is conveniently located at the entrance for RVers to empty their tanks upon arrival or departure. Water availability at each site is mentioned as "one tank," with a request for conservation, indicating that while hookups are present, there might be some limitations on continuous water usage at each individual site. For tent campers, the campground offers "interesting" tent sites, although specific details about these sites are not provided. All campers can benefit from the nice fire rings available at each site, perfect for campfires and outdoor cooking. A medium-sized area is also available for group cookouts, providing a communal space for gatherings. Onsite laundry facilities are not explicitly mentioned, so this might be a consideration for longer stays.
A notable feature of Main Brothers Campground is the presence of an area for kids to play, making it a potentially family-friendly destination. The well-maintained nature of the small and basic campground is also consistently highlighted in reviews, suggesting that while it might not offer extensive amenities, the facilities are kept in good condition. The availability of both 30 and 50 amp electrical service caters to a range of RV power needs. While the campground is located approximately half a mile from swampland, which can lead to a significant mosquito population (making bug spray essential), this is an environmental factor to be aware of rather than a direct feature of the campground itself. Campers have the option to purchase firewood nearby or, if properly equipped with boots and pants, can scrounge for fallen wood along the small nature trail or nearby main trail.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. There are no mentions of specific rates, discounts, or reservation policies. However, the positive feedback regarding the well-maintained grounds, convenient hookups, and access to the Tunnel Hill State Trail serve as indirect endorsements. One reviewer gave the campground a "solid 3 stars...almost 4," indicating a generally positive experience with room for minor improvements. For local users interested in staying at Main Brothers Campground, contacting them directly using the provided phone numbers, (618) 634-9311 or +1 618-634-9311, would be the best way to obtain current information on pricing, availability, and any specific rules or recommendations for campers.
The size of the campground is described as "small," which can contribute to a quieter and more personal camping experience. The spacing between RV sites, noted as being 30-40 feet side to side and a generous 60 feet between tail and stern, suggests ample space for maneuvering and privacy between campsites. This is a significant advantage, especially for RVers who appreciate having room to set up and relax. The campground's role as a good stopping point for those with a drop trailer embarking on Shawnee adventures further highlights its strategic location for exploring the broader region.
In conclusion, Main Brothers Campground in Karnak, IL, offers a well-maintained and conveniently located option for those seeking "camping near me" in Southern Illinois. Its direct access to the Tunnel Hill State Trail makes it a prime choice for cyclists and hikers, while its proximity to the Shawnee National Forest caters to nature enthusiasts. The availability of full hookups for RVs, along with a dump station, and the presence of tent sites, fire rings, and a kids' play area, provide essential amenities for a comfortable stay. The nearby Dollar General offers added convenience for supplies. While the small size and potential for mosquitoes (due to nearby swampland) are factors to consider, the overall functionality and strategic location of Main Brothers Campground make it a solid choice for exploring the natural and recreational attractions of the region.

Main Brothers Campground Reviews
Rooms were our 34’ motorhome which was excellent.Water hookup, 30amp…, I believe 50 amp too, and sewer hookup.Campground at the Southern end of the Tunnel Hill Rail to Trail. One way is approximately 45-50 miles. We rode from campground to Tunnel Hill trail head access. There is just around the corner from campground a Dollar General for about any need and quite a few wants. No dining establishments nearby that we wanted to pedal too after doing half the trail and turning around at Tunnel Hill.Nice fire rings. We actually were too tired to fire ours up so we pulled out with a fresh fire built just waiting for someone to touch off when they got the site next.
Aug 07, 2024 · Alan DeanRV camped. Solid 3 stars...almost 4. Campground is small and basic. That said - it is well maintained. Electric service (30/50) available. Fairly flat area to back in park...no pull through. Area for kids to play and a medium size area to have a group cookout. Tent sites looked interesting. Bring bug spray...mosquitoes are no joke but site is 1/2 mile from swampland. You can buy wood nearby or you can scrounge for fallen wood if you have boots and pants all around the attached small nature trail or venture off of main nearby trail. Dump station is available @ entrance, one tank of water available @ site and they ask you to not take more. Sites are 30 - 40 feet from each other side to side...w easily 60 feet between each site tail - stern. Good stopping point if you have a drop trailer to embark on Shawnee adventures.
Oct 15, 2020 · Aangi Dornblaser-MilesPretty nice campground. Fairly level spots, partial shade for some. Some cement slabs for 50 amps. Many full hook-ups.Close access to bike and walking trails. Close to wildlife preserve.Gave 4 stars because site not mowed, up to our knees and fire pit not cleaned.
Sep 13, 2022 · Kristen McNallyIt's an average campground. There was hardly anyone their over labor day weekend which was okay with us. It sits behind a quiet little town. Site was quite. No one picked up our trash for 3 days and it was overflowing. So, each morning we had to pick up what the critters scattered. Would have been happy to empty it ourselves except there wasn't a dumpster. We came in expecting full hookup (and we had electric and sewer), but the water was a shared component and we did not have a hose long enough or a splitter. They only have port-a-potties and porta-showers. Luckily we were self contained. If we head back down to the Cache we would stay again, but be better prepared.
Sep 08, 2020 · Beth BrowneThis campground was nice. We had a full hookup site not in the main campground but directly off of the road leading into town. Surprisingly, it was quiet and peaceful. Not a lot to do in the area but we were only there for 2 days. We're thinking about going back next season to do some more exploring.
