Malad Summit Guard Station Introduce
For those in the Downey, Idaho area or planning a trip and searching for "camping near me" or unique lodging experiences, Malad Summit Guard Station, located at Power House Rd, Downey, ID 83234, USA, offers a distinctive option. Unlike traditional campgrounds, this facility appears to be a rentable guard station, providing a more cabin-like experience while still being immersed in nature.
When seeking "camping near me," individuals often look for a variety of experiences, from traditional tent camping to RV sites and more unique accommodations. Malad Summit Guard Station caters to those interested in a rustic yet comfortable getaway, offering amenities not typically found in standard campgrounds. The positive reviews highlight its appeal for different types of trips and during various seasons.
Based on the available customer reviews, the environment surrounding Malad Summit Guard Station is a significant draw. One reviewer who stayed over Thanksgiving described it as a "beautiful winter forest" after a snowfall, indicating its scenic appeal during the colder months. The presence of a creek, although shallow, was also noted as an enjoyable natural feature, even for "mini cold plunges," suggesting a connection to a water source for potential recreation. The overall setting appears to be one of natural beauty and tranquility, suitable for a peaceful getaway.
In terms of services and features, Malad Summit Guard Station offers a notable set of amenities that differentiate it from typical campgrounds. One key piece of information is that there is "no running water," a fact that was communicated to renters beforehand and did not pose a problem for them as they were prepared. Despite the lack of running water, the station does provide "electricity, a fridge, a stove and a heater." These amenities offer a significant level of comfort and convenience, allowing for food storage and preparation, as well as a source of heat, which is particularly valuable during colder weather. However, one reviewer noted that "the heater isn't great," advising future guests to come prepared with supplemental heating, as they did with a portable electric heater and wood for potentially a wood-burning stove (though a wood stove isn't explicitly mentioned as provided). Another reviewer who visited in June 2023 confirmed that the "fridge and stove were both working great," and also mentioned that there were "no problems with the shower, water heater, or any other amenities," which seems to contradict the "no running water" statement from the Thanksgiving visitor. This discrepancy suggests that the availability of certain amenities, particularly water-related ones, might be seasonal or subject to specific conditions, requiring clarification from the management.
The restroom is another feature mentioned, with one reviewer noting that it is "shown in the photos and was clean." This transparency about the restroom facilities is helpful for prospective renters. The fact that it was clean is a significant positive aspect for any camping or lodging situation.
A notable feature for pet owners is that Malad Summit Guard Station is "dog friendly," making it an attractive option for those who like to travel with their canine companions. This inclusivity can be a major deciding factor for many when searching for "camping near me."
The reviews also provide some insights into the experience of staying at the guard station. The Thanksgiving visitors found it to be a "great getaway," emphasizing its suitability for a weekend retreat with friends. The June visitor also described their stay as positive, noting that the station was "clean and tidy" and that they encountered "just lots of mosquitoes," which is a common consideration for outdoor activities during warmer months in many areas.
While specific details about the capacity of the guard station, the number of beds, or other interior features are not provided in these reviews, the overall impression is of a rustic and functional accommodation that offers more amenities than traditional tent camping while still providing an immersive natural experience.
For local users searching for "camping near me" around Downey, ID, Malad Summit Guard Station offers a unique alternative to traditional campgrounds. The combination of a scenic environment, essential amenities like electricity, a fridge, and a stove, and its pet-friendly policy make it an appealing option for various types of getaways, from winter retreats to summer explorations. However, the conflicting information regarding running water and shower/water heater necessitates direct inquiry with the management to clarify the availability of these amenities based on the time of year and current conditions.
As there is no mention of specific promotional offers in the provided reviews, it would be beneficial for interested individuals to contact the management directly to inquire about rental rates, availability for different seasons, and any potential discounts for longer stays or specific groups. Given the unique nature of this accommodation, booking in advance might be advisable, especially during peak seasons or holidays.
To gather more comprehensive information about Malad Summit Guard Station, local users should consider contacting the relevant authorities or land management agencies in the Downey, ID area, as guard stations are often managed by such entities. Inquiring about reservation procedures, capacity limits, a detailed list of provided amenities (including clarification on water availability), specific rules and regulations, and any available photos beyond what might be in the reviews would be beneficial. Additionally, asking about the surrounding area and potential activities such as hiking trails or other natural attractions would help in planning a complete getaway.
In conclusion, Malad Summit Guard Station near Downey, ID, offers a unique "camping near me" experience by providing a rentable guard station with amenities like electricity, a fridge, and a stove, in a scenic and pet-friendly environment. While the availability of running water and related amenities needs clarification, the positive reviews highlight its potential for a memorable getaway, whether enjoying a winter wonderland or exploring the area in the summer. Direct inquiry with the managing authority is recommended to obtain complete details and make reservations.

Malad Summit Guard Station Reviews
Friends and I rented it for a weekend getaway over Thanksgiving. It snowed the first night so it was a beautiful winter forest for us. There was no running, we were informed prior so it was no problem. There was electricity, a fridge, a stove and a heater. The heater isn't great but we were prepared. We got wood in Malad and brought a portable electric heater. The restroom is shown in the photos and was clean. It is dog friendly. The creek is shallow but was enjoyed for mini cold plunges. Great getaway!
Nov 26, 2023 · Kenn EdwardsWent up there end of June 2023. Fridge and stove were both working great. It was clean and tidy. No problems with the shower, water heater, or any other amenities. Just lots of mosquitoes.
Jun 29, 2023 · Nicholas DaleyGreat small cabin that you can stay in year round except for when the forest service is using it. It is not a nice caben like in island park or bear lake, but it sure is warmer then outside. It is great for youth groups to be able to camp in the winter time. It has no running water in the winter. And there is no indoor bathroom, you have to use an outhouse. In the winter you have to walk through the snow for about a quarter mile to get to the cabin.
