Mammoth Guard Station

Forest Rd 0199, Fairview, UT 84629, USA

This is an awesome place! It's a great little getaway up in the mountains in Fairview canyon, just 15 minutes or so from the main drag. To rent the cabins, it's only $50/night/cabin so $100 per night since you have to rent both. They have running water, but they advise not to drink it - so just toilets and washing hands. They do smell a little old so there's that. It's about .5 miles from a nice little reservoir. We had dirt bikes up there and family members had quads and side-by-sides and there was plenty of fun to be had. There are fire pits and plenty of parking spots. - Brandon Young

Mammoth Guard Station Introduce

For those seeking a distinctive "camping near me" experience that combines rustic charm with access to extensive outdoor recreation, Mammoth Guard Station, located on Forest Rd 0199, Fairview, UT 84629, USA, presents an intriguing option. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this historic cabin rental offers a unique opportunity to stay in a former ranger station in the beautiful Fairview Canyon within the Manti-La Sal National Forest. You can reach the local ranger district for inquiries at (435) 384-2372 or +1 435-384-2372.

The environment of Mammoth Guard Station is a significant draw. It is nestled "up in the mountains in Fairview canyon," providing a serene and picturesque setting. The cabin is situated approximately "0.5 miles from a nice little reservoir," which likely offers opportunities for fishing or peaceful water-based activities. The surrounding area is characterized by dense forests, typical of a national forest environment, providing ample shade and a natural ambiance. Despite its secluded feel, it is conveniently located "just 15 minutes or so from the main drag" of Fairview, allowing for relatively easy access to town for supplies or other necessities while still offering a true mountain getaway.

Mammoth Guard Station comprises not just one, but typically two cabins that are rented out together. This makes it an ideal spot for larger families or groups, as you have to "rent both" cabins, totaling "$100 per night" ($50/night/cabin). This collective rental aspect fosters a private group experience, allowing for shared enjoyment of the facilities and the natural surroundings. The cabins themselves are described as "awesome" and a "great little getaway," suggesting a positive and memorable experience for visitors.

As a historic guard station, the cabins offer a rustic but functional living space. They are equipped with "running water," which is a significant amenity for a remote cabin. However, it's crucial for visitors to note that "they advise not to drink it - so just toilets and washing hands." This means campers must "bring your own drinking water," a common practice in many primitive or semi-primitive camping scenarios. The cabins also "do smell a little old," which is to be expected given their age and historic nature, adding to their unique character rather than detracting from the experience for those seeking a rustic charm. Each cabin would typically include basic furnishings, sleeping areas, and potentially a wood-burning stove for heat, depending on the specific setup.

A major feature and drawing card for Mammoth Guard Station is its exceptional access to outdoor recreation, particularly for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts. Reviewers explicitly mention having "dirt bikes up there and family members had quads and side-by-sides and there was plenty of fun to be had." This indicates direct or very close access to an extensive network of ATV trails, including a "photo shows an ATV trail right by the cabins." This makes it a prime location for those looking to combine their cabin stay with motorized recreation on designated routes within the national forest. Beyond OHV riding, the surrounding area likely offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing, typical of the Manti-La Sal National Forest.

Other notable features of the property include "fire pits," allowing for traditional campfire experiences, and "plenty of parking spots," which is convenient for groups bringing multiple vehicles or trailers for their OHVs. The presence of cattle guards indicates that the area is open range, and visitors should be prepared for the possibility of encountering livestock. One review specifically mentioned "cows mooed all night long" due to a cattle guard issue, highlighting a potential aspect of the natural environment visitors might encounter.

In terms of services and promotional information, the fact that the "Forest Service rents out these cabins in this beautiful area" is a key piece of information. This implies that reservations are typically made through recreation.gov or by contacting the local ranger district, ensuring a standardized booking process. The affordability at "$50/night/cabin" (effectively $100 for both) makes it an attractive option for groups seeking a cost-effective mountain retreat compared to commercial lodges. While not a traditional "camping near me" in the sense of bringing your own tent or RV, it serves the same purpose of providing an outdoor lodging experience with more comfort than primitive camping.

For those considering Mammoth Guard Station, it's important to understand the rustic nature of the facilities and to come prepared. This includes bringing your own drinking water, food, bedding, and other personal supplies, as well as being mindful of the open-range livestock. The cabin is ideal for those who appreciate history, the outdoors, and want a base camp for exploring the vast Manti-La Sal National Forest, particularly for activities like ATV riding, dirt biking, hiking, and enjoying the nearby reservoir. The positive reviews consistently highlight the fun and enjoyment had by visitors, reinforcing its reputation as a cherished mountain getaway.

In summary, Mammoth Guard Station on Forest Rd 0199 in Fairview, UT, offers a unique and highly recommended "camping near me" alternative in the form of a historic Forest Service cabin rental. Its location in scenic Fairview Canyon provides a tranquil mountain environment with convenient access to town. The requirement to rent both cabins makes it perfect for groups seeking a private retreat. While rustic, it provides essential amenities like running water (non-potable), fire pits, and ample parking. Its prime location for ATV and dirt bike access, combined with its affordability and the overall positive guest experiences, positions Mammoth Guard Station as an excellent choice for an adventurous and memorable mountain escape in Utah.
