Gooseberry Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking a genuine escape into nature, Gooseberry Campground offers a unique and tranquil camping experience nestled within the expansive Manti-La Sal National Forest. If you're searching for "camping near me" and desire a retreat away from the hustle and bustle, Gooseberry Campground might be the perfect destination. While it presents a more rustic approach to camping, its natural beauty and secluded atmosphere are highly rewarding for those prepared for it.
Embrace the Natural Environment: Gooseberry Campground is described by visitors as a "gorgeous," "quiet," "peaceful," and "serene" location. Situated deep within the Manti-La Sal National Forest, the campground is surrounded by dense trees, primarily along the edge of a cottonwood forest characterized by thick underbrush and tall grasses. This lush vegetation provides ample shade cover for most campsites, creating a cool and comfortable environment, especially during warmer months. The feeling of being immersed in the woods and enjoying a sense of solitude is a significant draw for many campers.
Understanding the Services and Amenities: It's important for prospective visitors to understand the nature of the services available at Gooseberry Campground. As noted by reviewers, there are no hookups for water, electricity, or sewer. This reinforces its designation as a more primitive or backcountry camping experience. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient in terms of their power and water needs. Furthermore, a crucial aspect to be aware of is the requirement to pack out all garbage. There are no refuse disposal services provided, emphasizing the need for campers to adhere to Leave No Trace principles.
Despite the lack of utility hookups, the campground does offer some basic but essential amenities. Visitors can expect to find several vault toilets that are reportedly well-maintained. Each campsite is also equipped with a sturdy concrete fire pit, ideal for campfires and cooking (when permitted and following local regulations), and a large, wooden picnic bench, providing a designated space for meals and gathering.
Unique Features and Activities: Gooseberry Campground boasts several distinctive features that contribute to its appeal. One of the most frequently highlighted aspects is the amazing nighttime star watching opportunities. Its significant distance from any towns or sources of light pollution creates an exceptionally dark sky, allowing for breathtaking views of the cosmos. The quiet environment, far from the sounds of highways, also means that campers have a higher chance of hearing the natural sounds of the forest, such as the evocative calls of elk.
For those interested in outdoor activities beyond simply relaxing in nature, Gooseberry Campground offers proximity to both good fishing spots and extensive ATV trails that run throughout the area. One reviewer specifically mentioned the short distance to fishing opportunities and the convenience of accessing ATV trails directly from or near the campground. However, it's worth noting that while a creek is located nearby, accessing it requires a somewhat challenging 20-minute scramble down a "scraggly hill," and there are no designated hiking trails directly adjacent to the campground itself. Therefore, the primary activities readily accessible are relaxation, stargazing, fishing in the vicinity, and exploring the ATV trails.
Accessibility Considerations: Potential visitors should be aware of the access to Gooseberry Campground. Reviews indicate that it is reached via a long and rutted dirt road. This type of road surface can pose challenges for certain types of vehicles. Specifically, it is mentioned that accessing the campground with anything longer than a 25-foot camping trailer would be difficult. Campers should assess their vehicle and towing capabilities before attempting to reach the site. The remote location also means there is no welcome building or on-site staff, so visitors need to be fully prepared with all necessary supplies and have a clear understanding of self-sufficient camping.
Promotional Insights and Recommendations: Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews, Gooseberry Campground is highly recommended for individuals and families seeking a peaceful and immersive nature experience. It's particularly well-suited for those who appreciate a more secluded setting and are comfortable with the responsibilities of no-hookup camping. The stunning night skies and the proximity to fishing and ATV trails add significant value for those interested in these activities. However, due to the access road and lack of amenities, it's perhaps best suited for what one reviewer described as an "intermediate camping experience" – individuals who have some prior camping knowledge and are prepared for a more self-reliant outing.
If you are looking for a "camping near me" option that prioritizes tranquility, natural beauty, and opportunities for stargazing, fishing, and ATV adventures, Gooseberry Campground in the Manti-La Sal National Forest deserves consideration. Remember to plan accordingly for the lack of hookups and the need to pack out all waste, and be mindful of the access road conditions. Prepare to embrace the quiet serenity and the feeling of being truly immersed in nature at this hidden gem of a campground.

Gooseberry Campground Reviews
Gooseberry Campground is a small, yet beautiful little campsite nestled in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. Accessible by a long and rutted dirt road, it would be difficult to access with anything longer than a 25 foot camping trailer. There are no hookups, and all garbage has to be packed out, but that feeling of being on your own for a little while in the woods is exciting and fun. There are several vault toilets that are well maintained, and every site has a concrete fire pit and large wooden picnic bench. Dense trees provide a lot of shade cover and you'll be camping right up against the edge of a cottonwood forest with dense underbrush and think grasses. The sites themselves are a little on the smaller side, but they're well spaced and each has its own charm.Although there is a creek nearby, there isn't a path down to it. If you really want to get close, you'll need to scramble down a scraggly hill for about 20 minutes. There are no hiking trailers anywhere near the site either, so this campground is best enjoyed by those who prefer to relax in nature. Due to it being so far from any light polluting town, this site offers amazing nighttime star watching, and its distance from the highway means you'll likely hear elk calling over the sound of any cars.We loved our short stay at Gooseberry Campground and would recommend it as an intermediate camping experience. There is no welcome building or amenities, so you really have to know what to pack to enjoy a couple evenings. My photos were taken from Site 9.

Sep 08, 2019 · Jeremy UBeautiful little circle campground tucked in a Quaking Aspen Grove. Campsites are spacious and the bathroom is clean and well tended. Amazing views down to Gooseberry Reservoir.
Aug 09, 2020 · Nina KlopfenstineGreat place to camp. This being out first camping experience in the area, we enjoyed it. Each site has it's own picnic table and fire pit. Area is clean and quiet. You really get to experience nature at it's best! The only thing is, there is no running water. Good thing we brought our own to shower.
