Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground

First time at this beach, and it was pretty awesome. The stairs to the beach from the parking are a workout, to be honest. I'm not sure if there's easier access to get down if you have elderly. Water is cold but not freezing. Love to see the shells, rocks, and seaweed wash up on the shore, reminds me of the beaches in Hawaii. Killer view from the benches at the top before going down those stairs. It's better than Sunset Beach, and I think we'll be going to Manresa a lot more often. - Bianca Banuelos

Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground Introduce

Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground, nestled at 205 Manresa Uplands Rd, Watsonville, CA 95076, USA, stands as a premier destination for those searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Central California coastal region. This state beach and its associated campground offer a distinct and immersive natural experience, characterized by breathtaking ocean views, expansive sandy shores, and a serene environment, making it a highly sought-after location for outdoor enthusiasts.

The environment of Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground is truly its most compelling feature. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the campground provides campers with "killer view from the benches at the top before going down those stairs." The beach itself is described as "more expansive and quiet compared to other beaches," offering a sense of seclusion and tranquility that is often hard to find in popular coastal areas. Visitors can appreciate the "extra layers of rough waves" while also noting how they "calm to the likeness of a lake in some areas when they meet the sand," creating diverse aquatic experiences. The natural beauty is further enhanced by the sight of "shells, rocks, and seaweed wash up on the shore," evoking a sense of pristine, untouched nature reminiscent of "the beaches in Hawaii." Sunsets at Manresa are frequently highlighted as "breathtaking," providing a spectacular end to each day. The area supports a rich natural habitat, including coastal scrub and strand plant communities, attracting various wildlife such as seabirds, marine mammals like seals and sea lions, and even migratory whales during certain seasons. The presence of sensitive habitats like natural dunes underscores the importance of staying on designated trails to protect native flora and fauna.

Access to this stunning beach is a defining characteristic and a point of note for prospective visitors. Reaching the sand involves navigating "175 stairs," which is described as "a workout, to be honest." This challenging descent and ascent are part of the Manresa experience, and visitors are advised to "feel the burn" when making the climb back up. While this might pose a challenge for some, particularly the elderly or those with mobility issues, beach wheelchairs are available free of charge and can be reserved in advance to aid accessibility. This effort to provide assistance, despite the inherent terrain, demonstrates a commitment to making the beach experience available to a wider audience.

As a state beach and campground, Manresa Uplands offers specific services and features tailored for camping. The campground, known as Manresa Uplands Campground, is unique in that it is primarily a tent-only, walk-in campground. It features 64 sites spread across three loops: Willow, Bay, and Lupine, set on a bluff above the beach. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring (where fires must be confined), and a food locker to deter wildlife. While RVs and trailers are generally not allowed for camping at the Uplands campground itself, the presence of a dedicated parking lot for day-use and for campers to unload their gear before moving vehicles to an upper overnight lot signifies its setup for a true camping experience. There are restrooms and pay showers available, with quarters needed for hot water. Potable water is also accessible. Pets are allowed in the campground and on the beach but must be kept on a six-foot leash and attended to.

Activities at Manresa Uplands are diverse and cater to a range of interests. The expansive beach is perfect for "beachcombing," where visitors can discover various shells, rocks, and seaweed. Fishing is a popular pastime, with opportunities to catch halibut, perch, and smelt, though a valid California fishing license is required for anglers aged 16 and older. For the more adventurous, surfing and bodyboarding are common, though the "frigid water temperatures, dangerous rip currents, and deep offshore dropoffs" mean that "only experienced surfers should be in the water." Coastal trails offer opportunities for hiking and birding, with various species like red-tailed hawks, white-tailed kites, and snowy plovers frequently spotted. Picnic tables are available along the bluff for enjoying meals with panoramic ocean views. The campground is also known to host summer surf camps, attracting both beginners and intermediate surfers due to its consistent waves and quieter atmosphere compared to other spots.

Promotional information for Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground emphasizes its status as a "hidden gem" offering "stunning coastal views and a peaceful atmosphere." Its close proximity to the beach makes it "perfect for both relaxation and adventure." The fact that it is a walk-in, tent-only campground can be highlighted as a unique selling proposition for those seeking a more immersive and traditional camping experience, away from the typical noise of larger RV parks. Reservations for campsites are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons (mid-May to October), and can typically be made up to six months in advance through the California State Parks reservation system. The phone number, (831) 761-1795, provides a direct line for inquiries. The park's appeal lies in its combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and a tranquil setting that feels removed from the everyday, making it a desirable destination for campers and beachgoers alike in the Watsonville area and beyond.
