Based on customer reviews, Maple River Campground is often described as a "great relaxing place" with "incredible" owners who are consistently helpful and attentive to the needs of their guests. One reviewer specifically mentioned enjoying the resident pet ducks, adding a unique and charming element to the campground experience. This positive feedback suggests a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, making it an appealing option for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the "camping near me" category.
One guest who stayed in a tent at site 21 in August 2023 shared a detailed account of their experience. They noted the kindness and consideration of Pam, one of the owners, upon their late arrival. However, they also pointed out a significant issue with cell phone service, mentioning that only Verizon offered coverage on-site, with ATT having no signal until driving about a mile away. This is important information for campers who rely on their phones for communication or other needs.
Regarding facilities, the reviewer observed that the outhouses at the beginning of the park were cleaner than those closer to the tent sites. The second set was described as odorous, leading them to avoid the porta-pot near their location. Additionally, they commented on the "fresh drinking water," noting that its appearance after sitting overnight might not appeal to everyone, although they personally found it acceptable. The fire pits varied in construction, with their site having one made of rocks that could have used cleaning.
Maple River Campground offers a boat ramp providing access to the Maple River, which is a notable feature for those interested in kayaking or other water activities. The reviewer who kayaked mentioned that the cement around the ramp was broken, causing a minor accident. They also described their kayaking experience, noting that the water was very shallow at that time of year and contained multiple trees that required maneuvering around or under. They suggested that removing a large stump blocking a significant portion of the water flow could improve the river's navigability. The water was generally still, making the return trip easier. It was also mentioned that tubing was not permitted, likely due to the slow-moving water and underwater stumps, which could pose safety hazards. While kayaking, the reviewer spotted some smaller bass and a variety of turtles and a few cranes, but not a significant amount of other wildlife. They also noted that the water appeared dirtier in pictures than it was in reality, with the bottom being more visible when the sun was out.
Despite some of these drawbacks related to the river conditions and facilities, the reviewer stated they would stay at the campground again, highlighting it as an overall nice place. However, they would not kayak the Maple River until it was cleaned up. They also addressed previous noise complaints they had read, mentioning that their campsite (the last one) was generally quiet, with only one instance of late-night laughter that did not bother them.
In summary, Maple River Campground in Pewamo, MI, offers a relaxing environment with owners who are frequently praised for their helpfulness and kindness. The presence of pet ducks adds a unique charm. The campground provides river access via a boat ramp, making it suitable for kayaking, although the river conditions may vary seasonally and could benefit from cleanup. Cell service is limited to Verizon in the immediate area. While some aspects of the facilities, such as the outhouses and drinking water, received mixed feedback, the overall sentiment from at least one reviewer was positive regarding the campground itself. If you are looking for "camping near me" with friendly owners and river access, Maple River Campground is worth considering. Contact them directly for the most up-to-date information on amenities and river conditions to ensure it meets your expectations for your next camping trip.

Maple River Campground Reviews
Great relaxing place! Owners are incredible! Always there to help and make sure everyone good and live the pet ducks!!!! We will be back
Jul 01, 2024 · Maggie ThompsonWe stayed Aug 12-14, 2023, sleeping in a tent at site 21. We arrived after 6pm, but called ahead to let them know we would be late. We met Pam, who was kind and considerate, after trying to figure out how to make our phones work.We have ATT cell service, which offered no coverage on site. We had to leave and drive about a mile before we had 1 bar on our phone. We learned that only Verizon offers service out there. The out houses at the beginning of park are a lot cleaner than the set that is closer to the tents. The 2nd set was odorous so we did not even attempt the porta-pot near our site. The "fresh drinking water" was not that fresh (see picture of gallon of water after it set overnight). I'm a hillbilly who grew up on drinking out of the water hose, so I could handle it, but others may not. The fire pits varied from rings, to one's with rocks around them. Ours was rocks and it probably should have been cleaned out prior to our arrival, but we were still able to cook on it.They have a boat ramp where we put our kayaks in. The cement is broken, so I tripped taking my kayak out, which left me with bumps and bruises. No one's fault, but my own for not paying attention. Just wanted to warn others. We took kayaks to left, going under the bridge, and then to the right. Very shallow water at this time of year. Unfortunately Michigan had failed to take care of the water. Multiple trees we had to go around/under (see pictures). We kayaked until there was a huge tree that the stump blocks 99% of the water, I do believe if they were to take this out then the water would move a lot better. Most of the kayak trip the water was still, which made the trip back to the campground easier. The campground said no tubing, i wasnt sure why until we kayaked. The water doesnt move enough to move a tube, plus there are a ton of stumps under water, but cloae enough to the surface that it would make it unsafe. We seen a few rowboats, but nothing else where we were. Theree were a few pontoons at the bank, so im guessing they went to the right when they went out. We caught a few smaller small mouth and large mouth bass. Also, the water looks dirtier in the pictures than it actually is, when the sun hits it you can see the bottom a lot better. There was a ton of turtles, and a few cranes, but other than that not a lot of wildlife to look at.I was hesitant to stay here after I read complaints about noise. As stated, we were at campsite 21. The very last one at the end. Site 20 was empty. Only one time we heard a bunch of laughter late at night, but that did not bother us. We were happy to know people were enjoying themselves.I always ask myself, would you do it again? In this case, it's a two part answer. Yes, I would stay at campground again. Overall nice place. No, I would not kayak the maple river until after they cleaned it up.
Aug 14, 2023 · Christina EI can say their staff is nice and helpful. As far as the lot goes it wasn’t mowed, the fire pit was full and never dug out, the Porta potty‘s they have are nasty and full of flies. The showers were recently upgraded but never cleaned and full of bugs. The river is barely moving and full of marsh. There is a lot of fish and the lots are big and beautiful!
Jul 04, 2023 · Amanda HolcombA perfectly beautiful small campground with a real family feel. Bathrooms are great and the river is gorgeous. It's quiet and serene and there's a boat launch. You can swim here if you want, the kids did.
Jul 19, 2023 · Chelsea MooreNot the greatest campground for younger children. On the other hand, rates are cheap and it's a great place for relaxing and fishing.
