Matagamon Wilderness Campground boasts a truly breathtaking environment. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, surrounded by lush forests and the tranquil beauty of the Maine wilderness. According to visitor reviews, the location is simply "beautiful," offering a serene and picturesque backdrop for your camping experience. One happy camper even described their arrival as "serendipity at its finest," highlighting the unexpected beauty and peacefulness of the area. For those looking to escape the crowds, especially during the shoulder seasons, Matagamon Wilderness Campground offers a less crowded alternative, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
The campground's proximity to natural attractions makes it an ideal base for exploration. While one reviewer mentioned that Baxter State Forest camping was closed during their visit, Matagamon Wilderness Campground provided a welcome and beautiful alternative. This suggests its strategic location for those planning to visit the region's renowned natural landmarks. The opportunity for "fishing right out front," as mentioned by another delighted guest who stayed in the "Deer Yard," further emphasizes the campground's connection to the pristine waterways of Maine. Whether you're an avid angler or simply enjoy the soothing presence of water, Matagamon Wilderness Campground offers a chance to connect with Maine's natural aquatic beauty.
Experience Exceptional Hospitality and Services
The heart of any great camping experience lies in the hospitality, and by all accounts, the hosts at Matagamon Wilderness Campground go above and beyond. Their welcoming nature creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, ensuring that guests feel comfortable and well-cared for throughout their stay. This personal touch can make all the difference, transforming a simple camping trip into a truly memorable experience.
While Matagamon Wilderness Campground embraces an "off grid" lifestyle, the hosts ensure that essential amenities are available for their guests. One reviewer noted the presence of a generator running at night, a necessity for off-grid living. However, they also mentioned that it wasn't loud enough to be bothersome, indicating a thoughtful consideration for guest comfort. Furthermore, recognizing the limited cellular service in the area, the campground offers Wi-Fi access in the main house. This thoughtful provision allows guests to stay connected when needed, while still enjoying the tranquility of a remote setting.
Beyond the basic necessities, the campground offers delightful extras that enhance the overall experience. The mention of a delicious "breakfast the next day" being the "cherry on top" suggests that guests can look forward to more than just a campsite. This added service provides convenience and a taste of local hospitality, making your stay even more enjoyable. The reviewer's playful wish for the coffee to be available for sale online further hints at the quality and appeal of the offerings at Matagamon Wilderness Campground.

Knowing that your beloved pets are not just tolerated but genuinely welcomed can be a huge draw for many campers. The spaciousness of the sites, such as the "Deer Yard" mentioned in one review, likely provides ample room for both families and their pets to comfortably enjoy the outdoors.
The direct access to fishing, as experienced by the guest in Deer Yard, is another standout feature. Imagine the convenience of casting your line right from your campsite and enjoying the possibility of catching fresh fish. This amenity caters to fishing enthusiasts of all levels and adds a unique dimension to the camping experience at Matagamon Wilderness Campground.
The "off grid" nature of the campground, while requiring the use of a generator, also contributes to its unique charm. Matagamon Wilderness Campground Reviews
We showed up by happenstance due to poor planning. Baxter State Forest was not open for camping and we had planned to get further North that day. Landing where we did with our camper was ideal, to say the least, especially considering camping gets closed in most locations across Maine after Columbus Day and the winter camping season had yet to begin. The hosts were most accommodating and the location was beautiful. Breakfast the next day was the cherry on top. Serendipity at it's finest. I only wish they made their coffee available for sale online 😉They are off grid so we could hear the generator running at night, but it wasn't loud enough to bother us where we were setup. They offer WiFi in the main house seeing as there is little to no service in the area.I wouldn't mind planning a trip around coming back to stay a few nights to really take in the location. It was truly enjoyable to be 'off season' and not have to share with too many other patrons!

Dec 02, 2024 · Kayla AtwoodWent and had breakfast on our last day of riding. Awesome place with delicious breakfast.
Mar 26, 2025 · Mark PageGreat camp ground and cabins.Nice lake by the cabins and eating place like Shin pond.I do however Wish they will say on their website, that this area has no cell service or no internet. That throws people off in this time and age.Practically no means of communication if people were to get lost.No power outlets in cabin.Gas stove in bears den was broken and was a fire hazard basically. Needs to fix the knobs in the stove. The cabin gets very hot and humid during august summers and no outlet to put a fan on.And so many bugs and mosquitoes that u cant keep windows open.Beautiful starry night.
Aug 13, 2024 · shopping ghoseFun campground right on the river in Northern Maine. Cabins are well taken care of and plenty of room.
