For local users searching within the "camping near me" category and seeking a nature-filled escape, Mathews Arm Campground, located on Skyline Drive in Rileyville, VA 22650, USA, presents an appealing option, particularly for those who appreciate scenic beauty and outdoor activities. You can reach them at (540) 999-3132 or +1 540-999-3132. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground within Shenandoah National Park offers a fantastic environment, opportunities for stargazing, and convenient access to hiking trails, although potential visitors using electric vehicles should be aware of the lack of charging facilities on-site.
The environment of Mathews Arm Campground is consistently praised for its natural beauty. Its location "right next to Skyline Drive" offers campers stunning scenery, especially during the fall season when the autumn colors are vibrant and immersive. This makes it a prime destination for leaf-peeping and enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the Shenandoah Valley. The campground is described as a "fantastic spot for nature lovers," emphasizing its appeal to those who appreciate being surrounded by the outdoors.
One of the unique features highlighted by a reviewer is the "incredibly clear night sky," which is characteristic of locations within national parks due to lower levels of light pollution. The campground even offers a "stargazing information session," suggesting an effort to enhance visitors' appreciation of the night sky and making the experience even more educational and enjoyable. This could be a significant draw for astronomy enthusiasts and families looking for a memorable nighttime activity.
Mathews Arm Campground also boasts "peaceful surroundings," contributing to a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere for campers. This serenity, combined with the scenic views, makes it an ideal getaway for those seeking respite from the noise and stress of urban life. The easy access to hiking trails is another major advantage. Shenandoah National Park is renowned for its extensive network of trails catering to various skill levels, offering opportunities for exploration and immersion in the natural environment directly from the campground.
In terms of campsite selection, one reviewer shared their experience of arriving on a Saturday morning and successfully securing a "great" first-come-first-serve spot (A86). They described it as "private with woods across from us!" This indicates that while the campground operates on a first-come-first-served basis, there are desirable and private sites available. However, the reviewer also noted that you are "pretty close to your neighbors here," suggesting that while some sites offer more privacy, overall proximity to other campers might be expected. This proximity can also be a "bonus for meeting people" for those who enjoy a social camping experience.
For those feeling "bold," the reviewer recommends doing the hike down to the waterfalls, indicating that there are potentially scenic and rewarding hiking opportunities accessible from or near the campground. Shenandoah National Park is known for its beautiful waterfalls, and access to such trails would undoubtedly enhance the appeal of Mathews Arm Campground for hikers.
However, one camper traveling in a Tesla pointed out a crucial consideration for electric vehicle owners: "there’s no charging station nearby." This necessitates "extra planning" for EV camping to manage battery life carefully. While this wasn't a deterrent for the reviewer, who found the experience "worthwhile" due to the surroundings and hiking access, it is essential information for local users considering camping at Mathews Arm with an EV.

Mathews Arm Campground Reviews
Mathews Arm Campground is a fantastic spot for nature lovers, especially in the fall! Its location right next to Skyline Drive offers stunning scenery, making it a perfect place to soak in the autumn colors. One of the highlights of our stay was the incredibly clear night sky—we loved the stargazing information session, which made the experience even more special. We camped in our Tesla, which required some extra planning since there’s no charging station nearby. If you’re doing EV camping, make sure to manage your battery carefully. That said, the peaceful surroundings and easy access to hiking trails made it all worthwhile. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a quiet and scenic getaway in Shenandoah National Park!
Jan 30, 2025 · Anup SheshadriWe loved every minute of our time at Matthew's Arm. We showed up at 8:30am on Saturday to claim a first-come-first-serve spot and were lucky to get a great one, A86. Private with woods across from us! You are pretty close to your neighbors here, but that can be a bonus for meeting people. I highly recommend this site for singles, couples, and families. If you're feeling bold, do the hike down to the waterfalls.
Oct 14, 2024 · Amanda GCampground itself is not bad. Some are little too open, close to the road and close to other sites but overall not too bad. There is a trail that goes around the campground. You won't see people on it but you can hear them all day. So it's not so quiet. There is no camp store at the campground. You need to drive 5-10 minutes for it.2 bad experiences yesterday.1. Potable water at dump station is broken. They know it and wrapped it with some tape which doesn't help at all.The cover of sewer is broken too.Not so well maintained.2. One of volunteer campsite host(I believe he was at the site between loop A and C) walking down, in the middle of the road, blocking the road, walked straight to my car and made me completely stop. Then kept staring at me with no words then passed by me. I wasn't speeding, nor I had a space to move out for him. He wasn't supposed to walk in the middle of the road and get mad at me.That was rude and weird. He shouldn't work there as camp host.
Sep 29, 2024 · Sin JeonOne of my faves! Spacious, fairly private sites & love that it's one of the few places that still has first come first served sites. They have changed their reservation system this year to being much more fair in my opinion to people who can't make plans 6 months in advance. The hiking is great, the place is pretty empty on weekdays, & very pet friendly. I try to spend time here every year!
