Environment: Beautiful Riverside Setting with Lush Grounds
The environment of JR Campground is consistently praised for its beauty. Situated right next to the river, it offers campers the scenic and auditory delights of a waterfront location. One reviewer noted the "beautiful setting" and described the ground as "comfy and lush," suggesting a pleasant and natural terrain for setting up camp. The proximity to the river likely provides opportunities for activities such as fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the peaceful presence of the water. While one reviewer mentioned the potential for bugs, particularly gnats, and speculated that it might be "buggier in the summer," the overall impression of the natural environment is positive, especially the appeal of being "on the water." For those searching for "camping near me" who prioritize a picturesque riverside location, JR Campground appears to be a strong contender.
Services and Amenities: Friendly Staff and Basic Facilities
The standout service at JR Campground, according to the reviews, is the exceptional friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, particularly the owner, Grace. She is described as "the most lovely lady," and the reviewers recount instances of the staff going above and beyond, such as bringing out firewood and checking on campers after dark. This personal touch and genuine care contribute significantly to the positive experience reported by visitors. In terms of facilities, the information mentions a "single porta potty on site," which one reviewer noted became "really gross by Sunday morning," indicating that restroom facilities are basic and may become strained with more campers over a longer period. The provision of a fire pit is implied by the mention of firewood. Overall, the services lean towards friendly and helpful staff, with more basic on-site amenities. For those seeking "camping near me" where personal attention and a welcoming atmosphere are high priorities, JR Campground excels in this aspect.
Features: Riverside Camping with a Sense of Freedom
A key feature of JR Campground is its riverside location, offering direct access to the water and the associated natural beauty. Another notable feature highlighted by a reviewer is the "feeling of freedom" among the campers, coupled with an "overall respect." This suggests a relaxed and community-oriented atmosphere where campers can enjoy themselves without being disruptive to others. The description of being able to "just kinda make your own area" implies a less regimented layout compared to some more structured campgrounds, allowing for a more individualized camping experience. However, a potential drawback mentioned is the need to "drive through a little creek" to access the campground, which might pose a challenge for "little/nice cars." This is an important consideration for potential visitors searching for "camping near me" to be aware of regarding accessibility. The campground seems to cater to those who appreciate a more laid-back and nature-focused camping style.
Customer Experiences: Wonderful and Recommended
The customer reviews for JR Campground are overwhelmingly positive, with multiple recommendations. One reviewer described their experience as "wonderful" and "highly recommend this campground," specifically praising the owner, Grace, and the friendly staff. The beautiful setting and the comfort of the ground for camping were also highlighted. Another reviewer appreciated the balance between "roughing it" and having some amenities, emphasizing the beauty of being on the water and the respectful atmosphere among campers, indicating a desire to return. The main cons mentioned were the potentially challenging creek crossing for some vehicles and the condition of the porta potty by the end of the weekend. Despite these drawbacks, the overall sentiment is positive, suggesting that the positive aspects, such as the location and the owner's hospitality, outweigh the negatives for many visitors seeking "camping near me."

JR Campground Reviews
Wonderful experience! Highly recommend this campground. The owner, Grace, is the most lovely lady and the couple that brought out firewood to us were super friendly as well. They even drove all the way down to our campsite after it got dark to check if we were doing okay. Beautiful setting and the ground was comfy and lush. We went in November so no real bug issues although some gnats during the day. I suspect it might be buggier in the summer since it’s right next to the river. Porta potty on site was fine.
Nov 09, 2020 · Elizabeth BottoPros: grace, the owner! She's so great. Being on the water was beautiful. There was a feeling of freedom, but also an overall respect between all the campers. People had music on and stayed up late, but no one was loud or disrespectful. You just kinda make your own area.Cons: be ready to drive through a little creek. Little/nice cars might struggle. The single porta potty was really gross by Sunday morning. If you're down for something between roughing it and a nice campground with amenities, stay here! We'll be back.
Nov 10, 2020 · elizabethany plogerGreat place for what I'd call "car camping". Wood is available (for a premium but beats hauling your own) and a small rock ring fire pit. The rest is up to you. Next to the river is nice or the small creek you have to ford to get there offers a nice sound to put you to sleep. Took my 7 year old for their first camping trip and they asked if we could go back next weekend!
May 15, 2021 · Aaron MyersPros: Beautiful spot where the Shenandoah River meets Jeremy’s Run. Dark skies and amazing stargazing when the sky is clear. Grace and her camp hosts are friendly and helpful. $25 for a large pile of firewood. Grounds are clean.Cons: camping spots are not delineated and we felt pretty crowded when it got busy. You have to drive across Jeremy’s Run to get to the camping area - be aware if you are traveling in a small car! There are only a few picnic tables throughout the property. $30/car feels a little expensive for no flush toilets, no potable water, and no guarantee of a table. Not the property’s fault, but the folks camping on the other side of the river blasted their music until 3am each night, and again at 5:30am at top volume as a “wake-up” call to their group. The excessive noise really ruined an otherwise idyllic setting.
Oct 12, 2020 · HERMy wife and I were taking a overnight backpacking trip up in the Shenandoah national Park. We wanted to spend one night at a car campground before starting the morning hike. We called Miss Grace a few days before taking the trip to reserve our spot. The campground was extremely clean, quiet, family friendly to include your puppy children, and very spacious. Perched right along the Shenandoah River, there were spots where you could put in your kayak, canoe, or just walk and wade in the river. Clean Porta Johns, firewood available. Fire pits for making your campfire and Smore‘s. I would definitely recommend and stay here again in the future.
