The Environment: Breathtaking Natural Beauty
The environment surrounding Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park Campground is clearly a major draw. Reviewers highlight the "breathtaking beauty" of the forest, the Mattawamkeag River, water rapids, and outcrop rocks along canyon walls. The area evokes a sense of pristine wilderness, with one visitor even imagining seeing indigenous people passing by. The potential for seasonal beauty is also noted, with the anticipation of colorful foliage in the autumn and the possibility of snowshoeing in the early winter. The presence of the river suggests opportunities for enjoying the water, and the clean and brisk feel of the water was mentioned by a visitor who tested its temperature. This campground is ideal for those seeking a "camping near me" experience deeply connected with Maine's natural landscapes.
Services and Facilities: Rustic with Lean-Tos and a Screen House
Based on the recent reviews, the services and facilities at Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park Campground appear to be somewhat rustic. While past reviews mentioned "lots amenities & pavilion for camping," a recent visitor noted the absence of a visible pavilion, bathhouse, or restrooms during their walk around the campground. They did observe a few picnic tables and fire pits that were reportedly in disrepair. However, another reviewer mentioned the presence of "many lean toos and even a screen house that you can enjoy." This suggests that while traditional amenities might be limited or less obvious, the campground offers more primitive shelter options like lean-tos and a screen house. Local users considering "camping near me" here should likely expect a more wilderness-oriented experience with potentially fewer modern conveniences and more reliance on natural shelters or their own camping gear.

Direct access to the Mattawamkeag River is a significant feature, offering potential for fishing and exploring along its banks. The presence of trails, including smaller ones possibly used for snowmobiles and marked ATV club trails, indicates opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding forest. The mention of Lower Gordon Falls as a lunch break spot during a hike further highlights the area's suitability for outdoor adventures. Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park Campground Reviews
August 11, 2024 - Split review . . . My wife and I love Maine’s natural beauty, every time we’re in State we visit & explore ! ❤️😃We hiked along the Mattawamkeag River , into the Mattawamkeag Wilderness Campground. Past reviews mention lots amenities & pavilion for camping. The park office was closed, as we walked around the campground, we didn’t see a pavilion, no bath house or restrooms? A few picnic tables, and fit pits in disrepair? The breathtaking beauty is clearly seen in the forest, river, water rapids , outcrop rocks along canyon walls. I expected to see Indians passing us , while on their return to their tribe from hunting ! We stopped at Lower Gordon Falls for a lunch break.I’d love to return in the autumn, for a repeat hike ! The maple trees would provide a colorful landscape of yellows, oranges, and red among the foliage!Or maybe bring our snowshoes for an early winter hike in December? There are smaller trails cut into the woods for snowmobiles! We noticed small signs marking ATV club trails.I would guess that there’s fish 🐟 throughout the streams & river that run through this wilderness park! The water looked so clean , and brisk as I stepped in to test the temperature!

Aug 17, 2020 · Becky NoyesThe crown jewel of the entire area. The Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park and Campground is one of the most unique places in Maine. If you visit the state, make it a point to venture to this one-of-a kind Campground. The river, the hiking trails, camping area, you will not regret it. Working on a FULL Review.
May 13, 2019 · syn edgēAmazing place! Best Campground I've visited! A little of everything ✨️ Will return always my favorite new spot!
Jul 01, 2024 · Miss CFirst time visiting. First camping trip with my father over Father's Day. Dad's pick and I could, in no way, have been any happier anywhere else! History. Beauty. Clean. Friendly. Amazing!Shower access. Garbage bins at each campsite. Good sized sites. Playground and rec room. All in walking distance really. I plan on asking at the office if they may need a hand hanging things up, moving wood, whatever I am capable of doing to help.
