Morris Hill Campground

Coles Mountain Rd, Hot Springs, VA 24445, USA

4.0
For years I have been camping at Bolar Mountain, but because it closes early in the season this time I stayed at Morris Hill. Despite the mixed reviews, I found Morris Hill to be a perfectly adequate campground. It has bathrooms with free hot showers, clean water to drink, firewood for sale, (and during my stay) a very helpful camp host. The campsites have enough room for 2 small tents and 2 cars. None of the campsites have a view of the water. You can see glimpses of blue through the trees, but that is it. There are trails at the campground, but they go to the visitors’ center. They do not go to the lake, or even to a view of the lake. If you want to enjoy the water you will need to drive. Luckily Coles Point is beautiful and less than 10 minutes away. And there is a boat ramp even closer. The campsites are relatively close together. I can imagine how noise and privacy could bother people during the busy season - but this was not an issue post Labor Day.If you are looking for water views and to be able to walk to the lake, you’ll want to stay at Bolar Mountain Campground. But if you don’t mind driving to the water, this end of the lake is also beautiful and worth a visit! - Rhiannon Killeen

Morris Hill Campground Introduce

Are you searching for a "camping near me" option in the Hot Springs, Virginia area, particularly near the scenic Lake Moomaw? Morris Hill Campground, located on Coles Mountain Rd, Hot Springs, VA 24445, USA, offers a conveniently situated base for exploring the natural beauty of the region. While one long-time camper accustomed to nearby Bolar Mountain Campground found Morris Hill to be "perfectly adequate," it's essential for local users to be aware of both its advantages and drawbacks, as highlighted in recent reviews, to make an informed decision about their next outdoor getaway.

The Environment: Forested Setting with Limited Lake Views:

Morris Hill Campground is nestled in a forested area, providing a shaded camping experience. One reviewer specifically noted that Site #2 at a different campground (presumably Bolar Mountain) was "VERY shaded," suggesting that Morris Hill likely offers similar conditions given the comparison. The campsites themselves are described as having "enough room for 2 small tents and 2 cars," indicating a reasonable amount of space for families or small groups. However, a crucial point emphasized in the reviews is the lack of direct water views from the campsites. While glimpses of blue might be visible through the trees, campers should not expect a waterfront experience directly at their site. For those prioritizing immediate access to and views of Lake Moomaw, this is a significant consideration. The campground does have trails, but these are noted to lead to the visitors’ center rather than to the lake or even a scenic overlook of the water. Therefore, while the natural setting is likely pleasant and wooded, it is not a lakeside campground in terms of direct access or views from the individual campsites.

Services and Amenities: Adequate Basics with Room for Improvement:

Morris Hill Campground offers several essential services for a comfortable camping experience. One of the appreciated amenities is the availability of "bathrooms with free hot showers" and "clean water to drink," which are often high priorities for campers. Firewood is also available for sale on-site, adding convenience for those planning campfires. During at least one reviewer's stay, a "very helpful camp host" was present, indicating that assistance and local knowledge might be available. However, the cleanliness of the bathhouse is a significant concern raised in one review. Issues such as being "bug infested, with spiders rampant and webs not knocked down, floors unclean, and shower curtains hanging with insects" were reported. The sink in the bathhouse was also noted to be "full of bugs." While the local site host who maintained the grounds was praised for their helpfulness, the couple responsible for restroom maintenance apparently "lacked understanding" regarding cleanliness. Despite these concerns, the basic amenities of hot showers, clean water, and firewood availability are still valuable.

Key Features: Proximity to Lake Moomaw (by car) and Nearby Attractions:

The primary feature of Morris Hill Campground is its location near the beautiful Lake Moomaw. While not directly accessible by walking or with lake views from the campsites, Coles Point on Lake Moomaw is described as "beautiful and less than 10 minutes away" by car. This provides campers with convenient access to the lake for various water activities. Additionally, a boat ramp is located even closer to the campground, making it an appealing option for those planning to bring boats or participate in boating activities on Lake Moomaw. The trails leading to the visitors’ center might also offer opportunities for short hikes and learning about the local area. For those who don't prioritize walking to the water or having a lake view from their campsite, the proximity to Lake Moomaw (via a short drive) and the availability of a nearby boat ramp are significant advantages.

Considerations for Your Stay: Noise, Privacy, and Bathhouse Conditions:

Potential campers should be aware of a few considerations mentioned in the reviews. The campsites are described as being "relatively close together," which could potentially lead to issues with noise and privacy, especially during the busy season. However, one reviewer noted that this was not a problem post Labor Day, suggesting that the campground might be quieter during the off-season. The significant concern regarding the cleanliness of the bathhouse is something that prospective visitors should keep in mind. While one reviewer still recommends the campground despite this issue, they advise being aware of the conditions. If clean and well-maintained restrooms are a high priority, it might be wise to inquire about the current conditions before booking or to come prepared with personal hygiene supplies and expectations.

Comparison to Bolar Mountain Campground:

One reviewer with experience at Bolar Mountain Campground provides a direct comparison. They note that if "you are looking for water views and to be able to walk to the lake, you’ll want to stay at Bolar Mountain Campground." However, they also point out that "if you don’t mind driving to the water, this end of the lake is also beautiful and worth a visit!" This suggests that Morris Hill Campground serves as a viable alternative, particularly when Bolar Mountain is closed (as it does early in the season), for those willing to drive a short distance to access Lake Moomaw. Both campgrounds offer access to the same lake but with different immediate environments and potentially different amenities or levels of maintenance.
