This campground provides free "dry" camping amidst the stunning backdrop of the California desert, highlighted by access to remarkable palm oases and hiking trails with breathtaking views. If you are seeking a more self-sufficient camping adventure in a beautiful and ecologically significant environment, Mountain Palm Springs Campground is a destination worth exploring.
The environment of Mountain Palm Springs Campground is characterized by the dramatic beauty of the California desert, punctuated by the surprising and welcome sight of natural palm oases. The reviews emphasize the presence of "amazing" palms, with one grove noted to contain over 80 trees. These oases offer a striking contrast to the arid surroundings, providing a vital source of shade and a unique microclimate that supports a variety of flora and fauna. The landscape also includes opportunities for "scrambling up the mountain beyond the palms," suggesting a rugged terrain with potential for more adventurous exploration. Campers can expect "Magnificent views of the desert, valley, and mountains beyond," indicating a location that offers expansive vistas and a deep connection with the natural landscape. The presence of even a "small trickle of water and a few tiny pools" highlights the preciousness of water in this desert environment and the life it supports.
In terms of services, Mountain Palm Springs Campground is described as "lovely, free 'dry' camping." This implies that there are no hookups for water, electricity, or sewer, and campers must be fully self-contained. The only specific amenity mentioned is a "Pit toilet" which is noted to be "well maintained," indicating a basic but functional sanitation facility. The absence of other mentioned amenities suggests that this is a primitive camping experience, where campers should come prepared with all their own supplies, including water, food, shelter, and waste disposal. The "free" aspect is a significant draw, offering an economical way to experience the beauty of the desert.
The features of Mountain Palm Springs Campground are centered around its natural attractions and the opportunities for outdoor activities. The primary feature is the access to several short trails leading to different palm groves, including one notably large grove with over 80 trees. These oases are not only visually stunning but also offer a chance to experience a unique desert ecosystem. The campground also serves as a gateway to hiking trails that extend beyond the palm groves and up into the surrounding mountains, providing opportunities for exploration and exercise. The potential for "scrambling up the mountain" suggests more challenging hiking options for those seeking adventure. The magnificent views of the desert, valley, and distant mountains are another key feature, offering a rewarding backdrop for camping and hiking.
The reviews also provide practical information for potential visitors. The mention of "roads are soft sand" is an important consideration for vehicle access. While one reviewer with a 25' RV experienced only minor difficulty ("just one bit of tire digging"), this suggests that two-wheel drive vehicles might face challenges, and caution is advised when navigating within the campground area. The advice to "Bring lots of water (especially on a sunny day, even in winter)" underscores the importance of hydration in the desert environment, particularly if engaging in hiking or other physical activities. The reviewer also notes that the hike to the oasis is "not too strenuous unless you do it in midday sun," highlighting the need to be mindful of the desert heat and plan activities accordingly.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Mountain Palm Springs Campground based on the provided reviews. For local users considering a camping trip to Mountain Palm Springs Campground, it is essential to be well-prepared for dry camping. This means bringing an adequate supply of water for drinking, cooking, and washing, as no water sources are explicitly mentioned. Campers should also have appropriate shelter, food, cooking equipment, and a plan for waste disposal, adhering strictly to Leave No Trace principles to protect the fragile desert environment. Given the soft sandy roads, it may be wise to have a vehicle with good traction or be prepared for potential challenges in navigating the campground. Informing someone of your travel plans and expected return is always a good safety practice, especially when camping in more remote areas. Additionally, being aware of desert wildlife and taking necessary precautions is recommended.
In conclusion, Mountain Palm Springs Campground offers a compelling "Camping Near Me" option for local users in California seeking a unique and free desert camping experience. Its key features include access to stunning natural palm oases, scenic hiking trails with magnificent views, and a tranquil desert environment. While it is a "dry" camping area with limited amenities (a pit toilet being the only one mentioned), the beauty of the landscape and the opportunity for hiking and exploration are significant draws. The advice from fellow campers regarding bringing plenty of water and being aware of the sandy roads is valuable for planning a successful trip to this remarkable desert oasis.

Mountain Palm Springs Campground Reviews
Loved this hike. It's not too strenuous unless you do it in midday sun. Bring lots of water (especially on a sunny day, even in winter). It's such a treat to see an oasis. The palms are amazing. There was a small trickle of water and a few tiny pools when I went. There's lots of opportunity for scrambling up the mountain beyond the palms. Magnificent views of the desert, valley, and mountains beyond.
Feb 25, 2020 · E CLovely, free "dry" camping. Pit toilet is well maintained. Several short trails to different palm groves - one quite large with 80+ trees. Roads are soft sand, so can be a concern for 2 wheel drive vehicles, but I was able to get our 25' RV in with just one bit of tire digging.

Jan 19, 2024 · Andrew DonnellyThis is a great little campground with views looking over the valley. There are lots of interesting desert plants and trails that lead to palm groves. No facilities - just a nice clean outhouse.
