Norway Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Monticello, Indiana area, Norway Campground, located at 1995 N E Shafer Dr, Monticello, IN 47960, USA, demands careful consideration based on recent and concerning customer reviews. The available feedback paints a picture that significantly deviates from the peaceful getaway many campers seek, highlighting potential issues with noise levels, safety, and the overall management of the campground.
Regarding the environment, while the address suggests proximity to Lake Shafer, the immediate ambiance and conditions within the campground, according to one detailed review, were far from serene. The reviewer described their two-night stay as "absolute HELL," citing an extremely loud music venue operating within the campground. This was not just background music but a "full blown concert at supersonic volume" on the first night, followed by a "playlist blasting at the same level" on the second night. The noise was so intense that the reviewer and their husband, who had traveled a significant distance to reach Monticello, experienced vibrating floors and walls in their RV, even with noise-canceling earbuds. This level of noise pollution severely detracts from the peaceful enjoyment typically associated with camping.
The services and management of Norway Campground also come under heavy criticism in the reviews. The lack of control over the extreme noise levels suggests a disregard for the comfort and well-being of paying guests. Furthermore, the second morning of the reviewer's stay involved an encounter with a local homeowner living near the campground, who informed them of ongoing legal action against the park due to the "awful experience" caused by the "wild partying and insanely loud music." This indicates that the issues extend beyond the campground boundaries and are impacting the surrounding community, raising further concerns about the management's responsibility and neighborly conduct.
The most alarming aspect highlighted in one review is a serious safety concern. The reviewer recounted a disturbing incident where a man "exposed himself" to her while she was walking back to her RV from the showers. The individual was reportedly "touching himself and laughing." This incident raises significant red flags about the safety and security of the campground, particularly for women and children. The reviewer, a self-described "native New Yorker" accustomed to urban realities, expressed being shocked and disturbed by this event in a small town setting, emphasizing that this is not the kind of experience one would expect in a place where people seek relaxation and a peaceful environment.
Another review corroborates the negative experiences and provides further insight into potential management issues. This reviewer mentioned a recent meeting where the "real" owner reportedly stated intentions to "flip the place" and acknowledged that the "sewers were in need of major repairs." The reviewer also noted that the prices had already been raised by approximately $500, despite the campground being described as "old outdated" and plagued by "terrible drunks." This suggests a potential decline in the quality of the facilities and an increase in cost, further diminishing the value proposition for potential campers.
Features that might typically be attractive in a campground, such as proximity to a lake, are overshadowed by the significant negative experiences reported. The extreme noise, safety concerns, and potential disrepair of the facilities, coupled with rising prices, make it difficult to identify positive features based on the provided reviews. The lack of any positive feedback regarding amenities, recreational activities within the campground itself (beyond potential lake access), or the general upkeep of the property is also notable.
Promotional information is entirely absent from the provided reviews. Instead, the feedback serves as a strong deterrent, with one reviewer explicitly advising others to "Save your money and stay safely far away from this trash heap" and expressing hope that the city would shut the campground down. This level of negative sentiment is a powerful indicator of serious issues that potential local users should not ignore.
In conclusion, based on the overwhelmingly negative feedback from recent customers, Norway Campground near Monticello, IN, appears to be a problematic choice for local users seeking "camping near me." The severe issues with excessive noise from concerts and loud music, a reported incident of indecent exposure raising significant safety concerns, and allegations of disrepair coupled with rising prices paint a concerning picture. The negative impact on the surrounding community further underscores the severity of the situation. Potential campers should take these firsthand accounts very seriously and exercise extreme caution when considering Norway Campground. It would be prudent to seek alternative campgrounds in the Monticello area that have a more positive and reliable track record for providing a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable camping experience. The strong warnings from previous guests suggest that staying at Norway Campground could result in a far less than desirable outcome. Local users are strongly advised to explore other options for their "camping near me" needs.

Norway Campground Reviews
Stayed there for two nights and it was absolute HELL. I have never been the type to go around complaining and bashing businesses, but I feel a responsibility to warn people. They had some type of music venue, a full blown concert at supersonic volume. The second night was just a playlist blasting at the same level. My husband and I put in a lot of miles to get to Monticello. Just when we had got our rig set lip on the first day, and went to lie down for a bit, music exploded everywhere. There was absolutely no escaping it even with noise canceling ear buds. Our floor and walls were vibrating. This went on well into the night. Several hundred people drunk, screaming, and music at a large concert venue level. The second morning while on a walk to the lake, we ran into a homeowner who lives just down the street from this park. My husband and I asked them how they managed to tolerate the wild partying and insanely loud music. They informed us that they were taking legal steps against the park and that it is an awful experience for everyone else living on the same street. I genuinely felt so bad for these people that they are constantly invaded upon by the selfish and careless owners and residents of the park. We were already planning on leaving but hastened our departure on the second night after a man exposed himself to me as I was walking back to our rig from the showers. He was touching himself and laughing. It’s clearly not a safe place for women or children. I am a native New Yorker and it takes a lot to shock and disturb me. This is something that might be expected in the Big A, but not a nice small town where folks are just looking to get away and enjoy the water and small town vibes. Save your money and stay safely far away from this trash heap. I hope the city shuts them down.
May 26, 2024 · Maeve StatenThe "real" owner said in a recent meeting that he's flipping the place. He said the sewers were need of major repairs. Already raised the price appx $500. It's old out dated and the drunks are terrible.
Sep 11, 2024 · Bryce MichaelThis place is a hidden oasis. The wife and I were a little skeptical coming here. All the farm fields leading up to this place made us think we were going to the absolute middle of no where, but when we got here it was awesome. The people are so friendly. There are things for all ages to do. You can party with the locals, play at the park or bounce pad, chill out in the creek. Very close to many fishing areas, water park, and a small town. They are adding a pool. We will definitely be coming back here again to visit.
Jul 04, 2022 · kiel gerbusThe owners are wonderful people they always have activities planned for weekend and the new pool is awsome. Great place for family fun. Definitely a wonderful campground. This is yr 2023 now 2024 new owners
Jul 07, 2024 · Kim KisseeI have been to many campgrounds and as soon as I stepped foot in this one I knew it would be a great place. Staff and owners are very friendly and helpful. Other campers are also friendly. Bath house is always clean and stocked. Very relaxing to sit by the fire and hear the small waterfall in the creek. A few miles from Indiana Beach. So much to do around here if you just go do it. I love this place!!!!
