Pettigrew State Park Campground Introduce
Are you searching for a tranquil and affordable "camping near me" destination in North Carolina? Look no further than Pettigrew State Park Campground, located at 4400 Thirty Foot Canal Rd, Creswell, NC 27928, USA. This lesser-known gem within the North Carolina State Parks system offers a unique and rewarding camping experience, as highlighted by enthusiastic local users. With its limited number of campsites, it provides a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere compared to larger campgrounds, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a quiet retreat in nature.
Immerse Yourself in the Natural Environment:
Pettigrew State Park Campground is nestled within the scenic Pettigrew State Park, renowned for its diverse natural beauty and the expansive Lake Phelps. The campground's proximity to the lake offers campers opportunities for various water-related activities and stunning waterfront views. One reviewer specifically mentions the availability of a "swimming area along the boardwalk near the campground," suggesting a refreshing way to cool off during warmer months. Furthermore, the presence of a "boat ramp/jetties" is a significant feature for those interested in boating, kayaking, or simply enjoying the serene waters of Lake Phelps. The same reviewer also notes that the boat ramp/jetties are "great for star gazing over lake Phelps," indicating the potential for breathtaking night skies away from city lights. For nature enthusiasts, the area offers "nice little hikes," providing opportunities to explore the surrounding woodlands and observe local flora and fauna. Notably, one camper mentioned the presence of "tundra swans" during a February visit, highlighting the park's appeal for bird watching, particularly during migration seasons. However, it's important to be aware of the local wildlife, as another reviewer noted evidence of "bear presence," emphasizing the need to store food properly.
Well-Maintained Services and Amenities:
Despite its smaller size, Pettigrew State Park Campground offers essential and well-maintained amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. According to a recent visitor, the campground features "well maintained and cleaned toilets and showers," which is a significant convenience for tent campers and those seeking to freshen up after outdoor activities. Additionally, the presence of a "dish washing area" makes meal preparation and cleanup more manageable. Practical amenities such as a "water spout" for filling water containers and "phone charging sockets (at the toilet block)" add to the convenience and cater to the needs of modern campers. The fact that these amenities are described as "well maintained and cleaned" suggests a commitment to providing a positive experience for all guests.
Unique Features and Nearby Attractions:
One of the standout features of Pettigrew State Park Campground is its proximity to Somerset House, a significant "historical plantation site that's well worth touring," as recommended by a reviewer. This adjacent attraction offers a glimpse into the region's past and provides an enriching experience beyond the natural environment of the park. The combination of natural beauty and historical significance makes Pettigrew State Park Campground a unique destination for "camping near me." The limited number of campsites, around "a dozen or so sites," contributes to the campground's peaceful and intimate atmosphere, often allowing for a more secluded experience compared to larger, more crowded campgrounds. The fact that a reviewer was able to "book a Saturday site online just a day in advance in late August" suggests that while it's wise to book ahead, there might still be opportunities for relatively last-minute getaways, especially during the off-season or on weekdays.
Affordable Camping:
Adding to its appeal, Pettigrew State Park Campground is remarkably affordable. One reviewer explicitly mentions the low cost of "just $26 a night!" This exceptional value makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious local users seeking "camping near me" without compromising on natural beauty or essential amenities. The combination of a low price point and the quality of the facilities and surrounding environment makes Pettigrew State Park Campground a truly hidden treasure.
Important Considerations:
While the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, one crucial piece of advice from a camper is to "pack your bug spray." This suggests that, like many natural areas, the campground may have a significant insect population, particularly during warmer months. Being prepared with insect repellent is essential for a comfortable outdoor experience. Additionally, the mention of "bear presence" underscores the importance of following Leave No Trace principles, especially regarding food storage and disposal, to ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife.

Pettigrew State Park Campground Reviews
What a little hidden treasure of a NC State Campground! Only a dozen or so sites, but we were able to book a Saturday site online just a day in advance in late August. Site #2 is VERY shaded. There are well maintained and cleaned toilets and showers, a dish washing area, water spout and phone charging sockets (at the toilet block). There's Somerset House next door (a historical plantation site that's well worth touring) and a swimming area along the boardwalk near the campground. Oh, and there's a boat ramp/jetties - great for star gazing over lake Phelps. All for just $26 a night! Do pack your bug spray.
Aug 30, 2021 · Michael CrawshawSmall campground, only two other campers in February. The tundra swans were interesting and noisy. Nice little hikes in the area. Definitely a bear presence, as evidenced by the marks on a tree, so don't leave your food out.
Mar 03, 2022 · Eddie DixonPretty, cozy little campground. Easy lake access. The Somerset Place historic site is just a short walking trail away, really adds perspective.Half the sites are shaded, the others open to the field but tucked up against trees. The bathrooms are in rough shape - women’s bathroom doors won’t close or lock, and the paneling on the showers are moldy and coming off the wall. Sink washing station has plenty of hot water which is nice.
Oct 18, 2024 · Beatrice MaThis place has only 13 sites so it doesn’t feel so crowded like some other popular camping places. One side of the loop ( with bathroom) is much less private, you park and camp next to your neighbor. This side is all grassy, so there were lots of mosquitoes. Toilet doesn’t flush super well, had to press and hold the button for a while. Overall, it’s a nice quiet place to stay after enjoying the beautiful lake.
Sep 22, 2021 · 郭洋Nice campground. Very family friendly. Lake is great. Lots of hiking and wildlife to see. Only complaint was bathroom a old and dark. The word is that the entire camp ground is getting rebuilt next year to fix the issue.
