Phoenicia Black Bear Campground Introduce
For local users in search of "camping near me" in the scenic Catskill Mountains, Phoenicia Black Bear Campground, located at 17 Bridge St, Phoenicia, NY 12464, USA, offers a highly regarded and conveniently situated camping experience. With contact numbers (845) 688-7405 and +1 845-688-7405, this campground has garnered enthusiastic reviews, particularly for its welcoming owners, prime location along the Esopus Creek, and proximity to the charming town of Phoenicia.
One of the most consistently praised aspects of Phoenicia Black Bear Campground is its ownership. Reviewers repeatedly highlight the owners, George and his wife, as being "extremely cool and laid back," and "fantastic, friendly and extremely helpful." This personal touch from the owners seems to create a welcoming and humble atmosphere, making guests feel immediately comfortable and at ease. The positive interactions with the owners appear to be a significant factor in the campground's popularity and the loyalty of returning visitors.
The campground boasts a diverse range of camping options to suit various preferences and needs. They offer "RV, Overland, Tent camping availability with great locations right on the Esopus creek." This riverside setting is a major draw, providing beautiful views, the soothing sounds of the water, and easy access for potential water-related activities, although specific details about these activities are not provided in the reviews. The availability of different site types ensures that whether you're traveling in a recreational vehicle, an overland setup, or prefer traditional tent camping, Phoenicia Black Bear Campground can accommodate you.
Convenience is another key feature of this campground. The presence of an "office / camp store" is highly beneficial for campers. According to one reviewer, it offers a comprehensive range of essential supplies, including "firewood, ice, tarps, any last min emergency supplies etc." Having these items readily available on-site eliminates the stress of forgetting crucial camping necessities or having to make separate trips into town for basic supplies. This convenience enhances the overall camping experience, allowing guests to focus on relaxation and enjoyment.
A significant advantage of Phoenicia Black Bear Campground is its close proximity to the town of Phoenicia. One reviewer notes that the "main town of Phoenicia is a football fields walk from the campground." This easy walking distance provides campers with access to a variety of local amenities, including "good restaurants, country store, ice cream shop etc." This allows for a blend of natural camping and the ability to easily explore the local culture and cuisine without the need for extensive travel. The convenience of being able to walk to town for meals, shopping, or a sweet treat adds considerable value to the campground's location.
For those seeking a more natural camping experience, particularly one near a "great rafting river," Phoenicia Black Bear Campground is highly recommended. The Esopus Creek is known for its rafting opportunities, although the reviews do not explicitly detail if the campground facilitates or is directly associated with these activities. However, its location alongside the creek makes it a likely base for those interested in water-based adventures.
An intriguing and somewhat unique aspect mentioned in one review is the expectation of encountering bears. The reviewer states, "Expect bears which makes the experience even greater, and remember you’re staying at Black Bear after all." This suggests that the campground is located in an area where black bears are known to be present, adding an element of wildlife and natural authenticity to the camping experience. While exciting for some, it also implies the importance of adhering to proper food storage and safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of both campers and wildlife. The campground's name itself serves as a reminder of the local fauna.
The overwhelmingly positive sentiment from returning visitors speaks volumes about the quality of Phoenicia Black Bear Campground. One long-time visitor of over a decade expressed that from their first visit, they "felt i was in the right place" and plans to return "year after year" as their "escape from NYC." Another reviewer enthusiastically declared it "our favorite campground" and stated their intention to stay there "all the time next camping season!" Such strong endorsements highlight the consistent positive experiences of guests and their loyalty to the campground.
In conclusion, for local users searching for "camping near me" in the Catskills region of New York, Phoenicia Black Bear Campground offers a compelling combination of natural beauty along the Esopus Creek, a convenient location within walking distance to the town of Phoenicia, friendly and helpful owners, a well-stocked camp store, and a range of camping options. Sep 04, 2022 · jennifer woodsLove this campground The owners are the best people and are so kind and nice. We know when we are there we find the peace we are looking for. The sites on the water are breathtaking. Everyone is always so friendly. We park and can walk into town, so convenient. Rustic campground that makes you enjoy the outdoors the way camping should be.
Jul 23, 2022 · Ellen McmenemyLovely campsite and the bathrooms were completely reasonable for being a campground , it was so nice to sleep to the sound of water . Felt like a very safe place to be. Location was prime being that Phoenicia is very central to some great hiking trails and has food and stores nearby
Sep 25, 2023 · Stefanie DBeautiful tent sites right on the river. 5 minute walk to Tanbark Trail and less to the beautiful little village Phoenicia (go to the pizza place). We had a great stay and Linda and George who own the place are awesome.
