Pleasant Grove Camp Ground Introduce
For local residents in and around Waxhaw, North Carolina (zip code 28173) searching for 'camping near me,' Pleasant Grove Camp Ground, located at 2220 Billy Howey Rd, presents a unique and historic destination. However, it is crucial to understand that Pleasant Grove Camp Ground is not a traditional campground offering typical campsites for tents or RVs. Instead, it is a seasonal historic retreat ground with a rich history dating back to 1829, primarily serving as a church retreat. Therefore, while it might appear in searches for 'camping near me' due to the term "camp ground," its function and offerings are distinct, focusing on a specific type of community and religious gathering rather than general camping accommodations.
The environment of Pleasant Grove Camp Ground is described as "beautiful" and "peaceful," characterized by "large oak trees" that create a serene and shaded setting. As a historic retreat ground, the atmosphere is likely one of tranquility and community, fostering a sense of connection among visitors, particularly during its active season. The presence of the Arbor, an open-air gathering place, suggests a central area for communal activities and worship. The Methodist Church on the grounds serves as the focal point for religious services. The "small cabins referred to as 'tents'" indicate a unique form of on-site accommodation that is likely privately owned or leased by families who participate in the annual retreat. The seasonal nature of the retreat ground means that its environment is most vibrant and active during specific times of the year, primarily around the annual camp meeting. Local users seeking a traditional camping experience with RV hookups or tent sites should note that this is not the nature of Pleasant Grove Camp Ground.
The services offered at Pleasant Grove Camp Ground are tailored to its function as a historic church retreat. The primary service revolves around the annual "camp meeting week," which occurs during the third week of July. During this time, families gather for worship twice a day and engage in fellowship with friends and relatives, some of whom may travel from afar. A "camp store operates during camp meeting," providing essential supplies and perhaps religious materials for attendees. The presence of "public restrooms" indicates basic facilities for the convenience of those staying on the grounds during the active season. It is explicitly noted that there are "no RV or campsites here," underscoring that Pleasant Grove Camp Ground does not offer the typical amenities associated with a public or private campground. The services are geared towards supporting the specific activities and needs of the families who have a connection to this historic retreat and participate in its annual gathering.
The features of Pleasant Grove Camp Ground are unique and reflective of its historical and religious purpose. The Arbor, as an open-air gathering place, serves as a central feature for worship and communal events. The presence of a Methodist Church on the grounds highlights the spiritual foundation of the retreat. The "small cabins referred to as 'tents'" are a distinctive feature, representing the long-standing tradition of families having a dedicated space on the grounds for their seasonal stay. These are not typical rental cabins but rather structures associated with families who have a connection to the camp ground. The annual camp meeting week, with its twice-daily worship and emphasis on fellowship, is the central event and a key feature of Pleasant Grove Camp Ground. The large oak trees contribute to the peaceful and historic ambiance of the grounds. It is crucial to reiterate that the absence of RV sites and traditional tent campsites means that the features are not geared towards general camping but rather towards the specific needs of a seasonal religious retreat community.
Given that Pleasant Grove Camp Ground functions as a historic church retreat rather than a public campground, information about typical promotional offers is not applicable. The focus is on the annual camp meeting, which likely has its own established procedures for participation and any associated costs for those who have a connection to the grounds and its traditions. Local users who are part of the community or have family ties to Pleasant Grove Camp Ground would be aware of any relevant fees or guidelines for participation in the annual retreat or for maintaining their "tents/cabins" on the site. For those seeking general camping accommodations in the Waxhaw area, Pleasant Grove Camp Ground is not the appropriate destination. Instead, they should look for campgrounds specifically advertised as offering RV sites, tent camping areas, or cabin rentals. Information about any costs or participation in the activities at Pleasant Grove Camp Ground would likely be communicated directly to the families and individuals involved in this historic retreat community.
In summary, for local residents searching for 'camping near me' in Waxhaw, NC, Pleasant Grove Camp Ground at 2220 Billy Howey Rd is a historic and beautiful location with a rich tradition. However, it is essential to recognize that it operates as a seasonal church retreat rather than a public campground. Pleasant Grove Camp Ground Reviews
I think the first time I visited here was as a kid for summer camp back in 1999 or 2000. As an adult it's interesting to come back because my now husband's family has a tent/cabin on site. So beautiful and a great place to be with your family.
Aug 08, 2022 · Alicia MalcombThis is a seasonal historic retreat ground, founded in 1829. Grounds are so peaceful, large oak trees, features the Arbor (open-air gathering place), a Methodist Church, and small cabins referred to as "tents." During camp meeting week (third week of July annually) families will gather for worship twice a day and fellowship with friends and far-flung cousins. A camp store operates during camp meeting. There are public restrooms. NOTE: There are no RV or campsites here. This is a church retreat camp, not a campground.
Aug 15, 2023 · Lynn WinchesterWhile some may find Pleasant Grove an oddity, it has been where some of my family and friends have gathered together each year since before my great grandparents were born. Daily "revival - oriented" services by the local United Methodist church for a week in mid-July, and most participants stay in "tents" (small wooden houses with electricity, plumbing, and sometimes air conditioning). A step back into the past and away from the fast pace of modern life, Pleasant Grove is an amazing tradition that lives on and thrives through the love of generations.
