Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Charlotte and Fort Mill area? The Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey, located at 940 Gold Hill Rd, Fort Mill, SC 29708, USA, offers a camping option for local residents and travelers alike. Accessible via phone at (803) 547-5416 or +1 803-547-5416, this campground aims to provide a convenient stop for those seeking a familiar camping experience under the KOA brand.
Based on recent customer feedback, the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey presents a mixed experience. While some aspects receive positive mentions, others appear to fall short of expectations, particularly when compared to the standards often associated with KOA campgrounds. For local users considering this campground through the "camping near me" platform, it's crucial to weigh these points carefully.
One of the frequently cited advantages of this location is its convenient proximity to major transportation routes and local amenities. Situated near I-77 and a Publix grocery store, the campground offers easy access for those traveling through the area or local campers needing to stock up on supplies. This accessibility can be a significant draw for those prioritizing convenience during their camping trip.
Another positive aspect highlighted in the reviews is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. One reviewer specifically commended an off-duty employee for going above and beyond to assist them when they were assigned an occupied and incorrect campsite upon arrival. This suggests that while initial issues may occur, there are staff members who are willing to provide good customer service and resolve problems. However, it's important to note that this positive interaction occurred after an initial negative experience.
Despite these positives, several areas of concern have been raised by recent visitors, which local users should consider when evaluating this campground within the "camping near me" category. A recurring theme in the feedback is the perceived high cost of staying at the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey. One reviewer mentioned paying $118 for a single night, even with a KOA membership discount, and felt that this price point did not align with the value received compared to other KOA campgrounds that typically charge between $70 and $80.
In addition to the pricing concerns, the physical condition of the campground's infrastructure has been criticized. Reviewers noted that the roads within the campground are narrow and in disrepair, with numerous potholes. This could pose challenges for navigating the campground, particularly for larger RVs or trailers. The upkeep of the internal roads is an important factor for overall guest experience and site accessibility.
Another significant drawback mentioned by a reviewer is the poor quality of the Wi-Fi service. Difficulty with streaming indicates that the internet connectivity may be unreliable or too slow for modern usage demands. For many campers, especially those traveling or needing to stay connected for work or personal reasons, reliable Wi-Fi is a crucial amenity.
Furthermore, the campground has been described as having "very few amenities" compared to other KOA locations. The specific amenities that are lacking are not detailed in the provided reviews, but this statement suggests that the range of facilities and services offered may be limited. Potential campers might want to inquire specifically about the availability of amenities such as a swimming pool, laundry facilities, recreational areas, planned activities, or pet-friendly features, depending on their needs and preferences.
The initial experience of one reviewer, who was assigned an already occupied and incorrect campsite upon arrival after a long drive, raises concerns about the accuracy of site management and the potential for check-in issues. While the problem was eventually resolved with the help of an off-duty employee, the initial stress and inconvenience are significant factors to consider. The management's response of "sorry this happened thanks for letting us know" was perceived by the reviewer as inadequate in addressing the frustration caused by the error.
For local users browsing the "camping near me" category and considering the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey, it's essential to weigh the convenience of its location and the friendliness of some staff members against the reported issues with pricing, infrastructure (roads), Wi-Fi quality, and potentially limited amenities. The discrepancy in value compared to other KOA campgrounds, as perceived by reviewers, is also a significant point to consider.
While the provided information does not detail the specific environment of the campground (e.g., wooded, open, near a specific natural feature), its location in Fort Mill, South Carolina, suggests a typical Piedmont landscape. Potential campers seeking specific natural environments might need to look beyond the general KOA brand and inquire directly about the campground's setting.
In conclusion, the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey offers a conveniently located camping option near Charlotte, NC. However, recent customer reviews highlight concerns regarding its pricing relative to value, the condition of its internal roads, the quality of its Wi-Fi, and potentially limited amenities. While some staff members are reported to be friendly and helpful, issues with campsite assignment have occurred. Local users searching for "camping near me" should carefully consider these points and potentially seek additional information or compare this campground with other options in the area to ensure it meets their expectations for a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience.

Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey Reviews
Overpriced to begin with and when we arrived after driving 12 hours the car tag had a campsite number that was already occupied and didn't even have what we paid for. Now what do we do,! Luckily, an off duty employee noticed us and helped us find the type of site we paid for. I did email and let the management know what happened. Response was "sorry this happened thanks for letting us know." The only bright spot was the off duty gentleman who was very friendly and helpful. We have an expectation of KOA standards after along day of travel and stress of being given the wrong site doesnt bode well. Crossing this one off the list for sure.
Apr 26, 2025 · Katie WestWe usually stay at KOA campgrounds because we expect certain standards will be met. This KOA campground falls short in several areas but let me start with a couple of positives:1. Good location - close proximity to I-77 and Publix grocery store2. Friendly and helpful staffHere is where the campground falls short:1. Overpriced - paid $118 for one night with KOA membership discount included. Most other KOA campgrounds charge $70-$80 and provide more value.2. Roads are too narrow and are in disrepair with numerous pothole3. Terrible wifi - had difficulty streaming.4 Very few amenities as compared to other KOAs
Apr 22, 2025 · Eric FagenThis place deserves every bad review it gets. How does it retain its KOA designation??Roads are narrow, potholed and muddy. We were told we were reserving a site with fill amenities, yet we were assigned a site without sewage. The place was essentially empty and we were paying $75 for one night. When we went back to the office, the woman there said "why do you need sewage when the dump station is free??" What??? The gentleman there quickly gave us another site which had sewage. We are used to high KOA standards and this place doesn't even come close. Stay elsewhere!!
Mar 11, 2025 · Doris CavlovichThe positive about this park is the ease of its location. The negatives are long- WIFI is nonexistent- Large potholes everywhere- No security or gates- Pre-arrival paperwork says sites are 35 ft wide. They are not- While quiet hours are 10 to 7, they come in and make a heck of a lot of noise picking up the garbage at 4:30 am- On our final night, the park supposedly “allowed” another group of campers to run their engine all night long. We asked them to turn it off after 10pm but they wouldn’t. There was no answer to our after hours phone call- Out of all the KOA parks we have stayed at in the past 8 mos, this was the worst
Mar 19, 2025 · Henry Teresa HildebrantThe staff is very amazing!!! And the facilities need to be upgraded. They need to replace their whole water system. Was that a water for four days they didn’t even bring in a water truck or did not even bring cases of water. I hope they would do some testing on the water because you had water sitting in the pipes for several days, hopefully nobody gets sick is amazing. The place needs some upgrades. It sucks the price they charge and when you get there it looks like it’s 20 years behind time.
