Reyes Peak Campground Introduce
Are you a local adventurer seeking a truly unique and remote camping experience at a high elevation with breathtaking panoramic views? Look no further than Reyes Peak Campground, situated at 7000 feet along Pine Mountain Ridge Road in Maricopa, California. As part of the 'Camping Near Me' platform, we bring you a detailed introduction to this one-of-a-kind destination, drawing upon firsthand accounts to provide you with essential information about its environment, limited services, distinctive features, and the journey to reach this elevated haven.
Immerse Yourself in a Remote High-Altitude Setting
Reyes Peak Campground offers a camping experience unlike many others, primarily due to its significant elevation of 7000 feet. This high-altitude setting contributes to a distinct environment characterized by large pine trees and scattered boulders, creating a sense of being truly immersed in nature and far removed from the everyday. The campsites are described as spread out and quiet, nestled amongst this picturesque landscape, offering a sense of privacy and tranquility that many campers seek. The altitude also brings the benefit of cooler temperatures during the summer months, especially with the presence of ridge breezes, making it a potentially refreshing escape from warmer inland areas.
Limited Services: Embrace Self-Sufficiency
It is crucial for potential visitors to be aware that Reyes Peak Campground offers very limited services, emphasizing a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience. According to camper reviews, there is no water available at the campground. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to bring an ample supply of water for all your needs, including drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. The only restroom facility mentioned is a single pit toilet located across from campsite number 2. Campers should come prepared for these basic amenities and embrace aLeave No Trace philosophy, ensuring they pack out everything they pack in.
Unique Features: Bouldering and Stunning Vistas
Despite the limited services, Reyes Peak Campground boasts unique features that make it a compelling destination for certain types of campers. For those who enjoy rock climbing, there is reportedly some great bouldering to be found among campsites 4 through 6. This offers an added element of adventure and recreation right within the campground area. However, the most consistently praised feature is undoubtedly the amazing views. From the campground, you can experience sweeping panoramas that extend towards the Ventura coast and back towards the Cuyama Badlands, offering a visual spectacle that is truly unforgettable, especially for those who reach the ridge line.
The Journey In: A Curvy and Potentially Hair-Raising Drive
Accessing Reyes Peak Campground is part of the adventure, and it's important to be prepared for the nature of the drive. The route in from Highway 33 is reported to be entirely paved, which is a benefit. However, it is also described as a single-lane and very curvy road that takes approximately 20 minutes to navigate. This can be a "bit hair-raising" as drivers are advised to honk before curves in the hope that no one is traveling too fast in the opposite direction. While the drive is acknowledged as potentially nerve-wracking, the consensus among reviewers is that the exceptional camping experience at the end is well worth the cautious journey. It's advisable to drive slowly and be extremely mindful of oncoming traffic, especially around blind curves.
Campsite Selection: Insights from Fellow Campers
For those planning a visit, insights from previous campers regarding campsite selection can be invaluable. The most beautiful sites are reportedly site number 6, followed by site number 5, and then site number 4. These sites likely offer the best combination of views and setting. For campers seeking more shade, sites number 2 and 3 are noted as being the most shaded. This information can help you make informed choices when reserving a site, if reservations are possible, or when selecting a site upon arrival if it operates on a first-come, first-served basis (though reservation information was not provided).
Backpacking Opportunities: A Challenging Ascent
In addition to car camping, Reyes Peak Campground also serves as the endpoint for a challenging backpacking trip originating from the Chorro Grande trailhead down off Highway 33. One reviewer described a "hell a hike" ascending from the trailhead through typical chaparral that transitions into switchbacks up the steep mountain before eventually reaching a coniferous forest and the paved campground. This highlights the potential for more adventurous local users to incorporate Reyes Peak Campground into a longer backpacking excursion, rewarding their efforts with the stunning views from the top.
Why Choose Reyes Peak Campground?
Reyes Peak Campground is an ideal destination for local campers who prioritize stunning natural beauty, a remote and quiet atmosphere, and are comfortable with a more self-sufficient camping style. The panoramic views stretching to the coast and the unique bouldering opportunities offer distinct attractions. While the drive in requires caution and the lack of water necessitates careful planning, the overall experience is consistently described as "worth taking your life in your hands" due to the unparalleled beauty and tranquility found at this high-altitude retreat.

Reyes Peak Campground Reviews
Beautiful, remote campground with spread-out, quiet sites nestled among big pines and boulders. No water; single pit toilet across from site 2. The altitude and ridge breezes keep it cool in summer. Some great bouldering among sites 4-6. The most beautiful sites are 6, 5, then 4. Sites 2 and 3 are most shaded. The drive in from 33 is all paved, but single-lane and curvy so it's a bit hair-raising for 20 minutes: honking before curves hoping no one is moving fast the other direction. But the camping is worth taking your life in your hands.
Sep 06, 2020 · Randy WilsonThis campround is one of a kind, at 7000 ft this was one hell a hike. I I started my one-night backpacking trip at the Chorro grande trailhead down off the 33, I ascended through typical chaparrel that turns into switchbacks up the steep mountain. It eventually turns to a conifirous forest and ends on the paved Reyes peak campround. The campground has amazing views that span the Ventura coast and back towards the Cuyama Badlands.
Mar 27, 2019 · Jesse RodriguezThis campground has a lot going for it. Just be mindful of what campsite you choose. We stayed at a site that had a serious hornet, wasp and bee problem. But the campsite was otherwise beautiful.
Sep 28, 2022 · Daniel JBeautiful and so close to home. Love the big trees and view. The elevation is a little surprising and drastically different weather for only being less than two hours from the beach. We had a great time. There are only two FF spots, the rest need reservation. We had spot #4
Nov 07, 2020 · Shelby HaleGreat tucked away campground. Walk up spots with a board to pay at. Great building around. Fire pits, picnic table, grill at each site. 7 sites below at pine mountain campground too. Plus a couple pull offs if you're vanning it.
