Ridge Campground Introduce
Ridge Campground, situated within the historically rich and naturally beautiful Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, CA 96161, is a highly-regarded camping destination that perfectly blends a wilderness experience with convenient access to urban amenities. For those searching under the "Camping Near Me" category, Ridge Campground offers an array of features and services that cater to various outdoor enthusiasts, from serious anglers to families seeking a peaceful getaway. The campground can be reached at (530) 582-7892 or +1 530-582-7892.
The environment at Ridge Campground is often described as "magical" and "peaceful." It is "shaded by tall dense pines," creating a serene and immersive forest setting. Despite being just "one exit away" from a "full city" (Truckee), the campground is "surrounded by wilderness," making it feel much more remote than its convenient location suggests. Campers report that you "can't even tell you are that close to the city," ensuring a quiet experience free from urban noise and traffic. This unique juxtaposition offers the "best of all worlds" – easy access to shopping and supplies in Truckee, combined with the tranquility of the Sierra Nevada landscape. The park itself is located at about 6,000 feet in elevation, offering crisp, pine-scented air and stunning mountain scenery. The terrain features granite formations from the Sierra Nevada's geologic history, adding to its rugged beauty.
Ridge Campground is part of Donner Memorial State Park, which encompasses Shallenberger Ridge to the south of Donner Lake. This proximity to Donner Lake is a major environmental highlight, providing "multiple swimming areas" and "great fishing with huge fish" for anglers interested in native kokanee or planted trout. The lake itself is a "gem of a freshwater mountain lake" with smooth waters and scenic views, ideal for boating, paddling, and even wind sports. The park also features 2.5 miles of trails, mostly flat, offering opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty without strenuous climbs. For more challenging hikes, the nearby Tahoe National Forest provides an extensive network of trails, including the Pacific Crest Trail. In winter, the park transforms, offering opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on designated trails.
In terms of services, Ridge Campground provides 59 campsites equipped with essential amenities for a comfortable camping experience. Each site includes "picnic tables, restrooms, hot showers and food lockers." The presence of hot showers is a significant advantage for campers, offering a level of comfort not always found in more rustic campgrounds. Restrooms with flush toilets are also available, enhancing the convenience for visitors. The provision of food lockers is crucial for bear safety, as campers are advised to store all food and scented items securely to avoid attracting wildlife. All sites are reservable, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance through the California State Parks reservation system (often via recreation.gov), which is highly recommended, especially during the busy summer months. Prices for campsites start at around $35.00 per night, with additional fees for extra vehicles. Seven campsites are designated as accessible, with accessible restrooms and showers in both Creek Camp and Split Rock Camp, and accessible routes from the road to these facilities, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity. A beach wheelchair is also available at the entry station for access to the lake shore.
The features of Ridge Campground extend beyond just the campsites. Within Donner Memorial State Park, visitors have access to a wealth of activities. Boating is popular on Donner Lake, with a public boat launching ramp nearby operated by the Truckee Donner Recreation and Parks district. Fishing along the three miles of fishable shore between Donner Lake and Donner Creek is a major draw. The park offers 2.5 miles of hiking trails, with more extensive options in the nearby Tahoe National Forest for those seeking a greater challenge. Paddling, wind sports (like windsurfing), and swimming (particularly at China Cove Beach, a designated swimming area) are popular water activities. During winter, the park caters to snow sports enthusiasts with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Beyond recreation, the park holds significant historical importance as the site where the ill-fated Donner Party was trapped. The Emigrant Trail Museum, within the park, offers exhibits on Native American life, the Donner Party, and the construction of the transcontinental railroad, providing an educational and contemplative aspect to a camping trip. The Pioneer Monument also commemorates those who emigrated to California. Pet owners will appreciate that dogs are allowed on leash in designated areas, adding to its family-friendly appeal.
Promotional information for Ridge Campground often highlights its "magical" atmosphere and the diverse range of activities available for "your whole family" or "you and your buddies for a fishing trip." The convenience of being "close to town" (Truckee is just "one exit away"), allowing for "any shopping that you need or may have forgot to bring up," while simultaneously feeling "surrounded by wilderness," is a unique selling point. The presence of "multiple swimming areas" and the potential for "huge fish" in Donner Lake are strong draws for water sports and fishing enthusiasts. The cultural and historical significance of Donner Memorial State Park, including the Donner Pass museum near the main entrance and Donner Pass itself a short drive away, provides an enriching dimension to a camping trip. While the campground has a seasonal closing (around mid-September, with opening in late May), its reputation as a beautiful place to stay, with tall, dense pines and proximity to the lake, makes it a highly recommended spot for "Camping Near Me" searches when it is open. Its popularity means early reservations are often essential to secure a spot in this "lovely place to just get away."

Ridge Campground Reviews
This place is magical. It is the best of all worlds. Nice campsites, multiple swimming areas. Great Fishing with huge fish. Very peaceful area. On top of all this just one exit away is a full city where you can get in any shopping that you need or may have forgot to bring up. But just because the city is so close does not mean you have to deal with noise and traffic by the campgrounds. These campground are surrounded by wilderness and you cant even tell you are that close to the city. Lovely place to just get away wit you and your buddies for a fishing trip or for your whole family. There is plenty to do for all.
Nov 25, 2018 · Da ILLESTIntended to camp there 10/1/24. Even though weather was still great, sign said closed as of 9/13/24. Rode thru on my m/c-it would be a beautiful place to stay. Shaded by tall dense pines. Close to town, walk to lake, Donner Pass museum near main entrance, and Donner Pass itself a short drive away. found Upper Little Truckee River campground was still open ( but they got notice to close 10/15/24 while I was there. Next trip for sure.
Oct 08, 2024 · John Sikes SikesLove it, clean, well kept, nice restrooms and showers. Donner Lake nice for open water swimming and most all water sports with rentals for water toys on lake within walking distance. Close to Tahoe and rock climbing as well as hiking and biking.
Aug 20, 2020 · Chuck KightNice clean bathrooms, spacious sites and showers! Ridge campground is my preference, less mosquitoes than the lakeside sites
Jul 27, 2023 · Loren O'RourkeAbsolutely beautiful campground. Just bring a canopy for shade as some of the campsites are not fully covered by the trees. Remember to bring the mosquito repellent and full range of clothes for all weathers since temps might go very low in the early morning even if it is summer. Nice bathrooms, payable showers, beautiful lake nearby. We had a great time. We'll definitely come back.
