Tahoe Donner Campground Introduce
Welcome to Tahoe Donner Campground, your gateway to an unforgettable outdoor adventure in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains, just a stone's throw from the majestic Lake Tahoe and historic Donner Lake. Located at 13813 Alder Creek Rd, Truckee, CA 96161, USA, this popular destination offers a diverse camping experience for both RV and tent campers, making it a perfect fit for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me."
Tahoe Donner Campground is renowned for its picturesque alpine setting. Imagine waking up to the crisp mountain air, surrounded by towering Jeffrey Pines and impressive boulders, creating a serene and natural ambiance. While the campground is situated in a high-elevation area, offering cooler temperatures, especially at night, even in summer, it provides an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The sounds of nature, combined with the scent of pine, contribute to a truly immersive outdoor experience. It's important to note that due to the high elevation, snow can extend the winter season, so checking weather and road conditions before your visit is always recommended. This natural environment is also a bear habitat, emphasizing the importance of proper food storage in bear-proof containers and responsible waste disposal to ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife.
Tahoe Donner Campground offers a range of services and amenities designed to enhance your stay and provide comfort amidst the wilderness. For those who prefer a more traditional camping experience, tent sites are available, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in nature. RV enthusiasts will appreciate the convenience of RV sites equipped with electrical and water hookups, making your stay comfortable and hassle-free. Additionally, the campground provides essential facilities such as clean restrooms with flush toilets and sinks, along with hot showers. Coin-operated heated shower facilities are also available for your convenience. Community water spigots with potable water are readily accessible throughout the campground. For RVers, a dump station is available on-site, free for registered campers and available for a fee for non-campers. Trash dumpsters are provided for responsible waste disposal. Complimentary WiFi access is also available, allowing you to stay connected if needed. It's important to note that quiet hours are typically enforced from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM, including generator use, to ensure a peaceful environment for all campers. Pets are welcome at Tahoe Donner Campground for a fee, with a maximum of two dogs allowed per campsite. All dogs must remain on a leash at all times and cannot be left unattended at the campsite. The campground is also a non-smoking resort, and smoking is prohibited throughout the entire area, promoting a healthier and safer environment, especially concerning fire prevention.
Tahoe Donner Campground is more than just a place to pitch your tent or park your RV; it's a hub for a variety of recreational activities that cater to all ages and interests. Its prime location offers easy access to the Emigrant Trail and an extensive network of trails within the wider Tahoe Donner association. This makes it simple for visitors to explore the breathtaking Sierra Nevada wilderness through hiking and mountain biking. The region boasts numerous trails suitable for all skill levels. Beyond the immediate campground, the proximity to Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe provides ample opportunities for water activities such as swimming, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Fishing licenses are required for those looking to cast a line. For those seeking active recreation within the campground itself, facilities for volleyball, ping pong, and horseshoes are available. The broader Tahoe Donner Association also offers a wealth of additional amenities, including an Equestrian Center for horseback riding tours, a Golf Course, and a Tennis + Pickleball Center. During the winter months, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, with opportunities for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and tubing/sledding at the Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort and Cross Country Ski Center. The area is rich in history and natural beauty, with local attractions like Donner Memorial State Park just a few miles away, offering insightful exhibits on the Emigrant Experience, the Donner Party, and the construction of the transcontinental railroad. Historic downtown Truckee, with its charming shops and restaurants, is also a short drive away. Various events and programs are often hosted by the Tahoe Donner Association, providing additional opportunities for engagement and entertainment.
Tahoe Donner Campground is a public amenity, open to anyone looking to enjoy the Truckee-Tahoe area. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak season, and can be made through ReserveAmerica.com. Stays are limited to 28 consecutive days. Additional fees may apply for extra vehicles or dogs. Specific 4-week stay rates are also available. Cancellation policies typically require at least two days' notice to avoid a one-night no-show fee.
Customer reviews offer valuable insights into the camping experience. One satisfied camper who spent an entire summer at the campground praised the "amazing people amazing campground," emphasizing that following the rules ensures a great stay. They noted that it "can get loud on weekends but other than that quite nice," and highlighted the owners' dedication to ensuring a pleasant experience, highly recommending the campground. Another current guest expressed happiness about the strict fire and smog restrictions, stating, "So so happy that fire and all this stuff with smog not allowed. So so happy about that. Hate campfires and smog from it." However, this guest also noted, "It is a bit loud due to very disrespectful people around. They are very loud and music also very loud." These reviews indicate that while the campground offers a beautiful environment and attentive staff, noise levels can sometimes be a concern, particularly on weekends. Generally, campers appreciate the clean facilities, spacious sites, and the convenient access to nearby attractions like Donner Memorial State Park and Donner Lake. Reviewers frequently mention the beauty of the surrounding nature, with some suggesting sites closer to the stream for their beauty and spaciousness, though noting they might be closer to neighbors. The value compared to other RV parks in the area is also often highlighted. It is also noted that cell service can be spotty in the forest, so taking a screenshot of the map before arrival is a useful tip.

Jun 23, 2024 · Anya KI spent the entire summer in this campground. Amazing people amazing campground. Just follow the rules and don't be stupid and you'll have a great stay. Can get loud on weekends but other than that quite nice. The owners went out of their way to make sure I had a great stay multiple times. Highly recommend!
Oct 06, 2022 · Matthew EckersonGreat location for hiking trails, great amenities, I mean heck they have a ice machine and a stainless steel sink for cleaning up dishes! The creek is very soothing to listen to at night, and the RV crowd was very quiet. In past at other campgrounds I've heard loud music, generators, etc well into the late night. Here it was very peaceful and friendly.
Jun 11, 2018 · ShaunReally nice. Clean and friendly, showers and bathrooms work fine. Trash and ice machine are nice perks. They have RV hookups but I went in a tent. There was a Fire ban. But you can burn with propane, so if you bring propane you can cook and have a little fire. Obviously it's inconvenience but still. Nice weather, but a lot of mosquitoes. I would definitely go again
Jul 28, 2019 · Andrew RamosNice campground. Clean. Respectful campers. Good mix of tent & RV sites. Showers, laundry, (clean) flush toilets available for the wife. Within 30 minutes of Lake Tahoe (Kings Beach) - even closer to smaller lakes with fishing. Bike/hiking trails and a creek accessible by walking.
