Robert W Craig Campground Introduce
For local users exploring the "camping near me" category in the search of a well-maintained and scenic campground, Robert W Craig Campground, located at 787 Robert Craig Ln, Elk Garden, WV 26717, USA, presents a compelling option. Situated in the picturesque landscapes of West Virginia, this ACE campground offers a generally positive camping experience, albeit with a few considerations to keep in mind. While it might not have every amenity, its strengths in maintenance, friendly staff, and access to natural attractions make it a noteworthy destination for those seeking a retreat into nature.
The environment at Robert W Craig Campground is consistently praised for its upkeep. Visitors note that the campground is "very well maintained," contributing to a pleasant and organized camping experience. The majority of the campsites are described as "very nice" and benefit from being paved. This is a significant advantage for RVers and tent campers alike, providing a stable and clean surface. Some sites also feature an "addition of gravel to extend the length," which can be particularly useful for larger vehicles or those wanting extra space around their setup.
However, it's important to note that not all sites are created equal. Some are described as "short," which might pose a challenge for longer RVs, and others are "far from level even though they’re paved," requiring careful leveling upon arrival. Therefore, when booking, it might be beneficial to inquire about the specific characteristics of individual sites to ensure they meet your needs.
In terms of services, Robert W Craig Campground offers electric hookups at all sites. This is a significant convenience for RV travelers needing power for their appliances and devices. However, it is crucial to note, as highlighted by a reviewer, that the campground currently only offers electric sites and does not have full hookups (sewer and water connections at each site). This lack of full hookups was the primary reason for a 4-star rating from one visitor who otherwise had a great experience and would have given a full 5 stars if this amenity were available. For RVers planning longer stays or those who prefer the convenience of on-site water and sewer, this is a key consideration.
The staff at Robert W Craig Campground are consistently described as "real nice" and "very well maintained," echoing the sentiment about the overall upkeep of the facility. The campground also features a store, although one reviewer noted that it has "weird hours." However, a helpful feature is the availability of a camp host who is willing to open the store during off-hours if guests need something, demonstrating a commitment to guest service even with limited operating times.
For essential facilities, Robert W Craig Campground provides restrooms and showers that are reported to be "kept clean." However, one reviewer noted that there is only "one shower house," which could be inconvenient for campers situated in the "higher numbered loop" who might need to take a walk "through the wooded path or around the road" to access it. Additionally, the bathhouse and shower house were given a rating of "maybe a 6/10," described as "mostly clean but pretty dated and lack of upkeep in terms of painting etc." While functional, guests should be aware that the facilities might not be the most modern.
One significant factor for those planning to stay connected is the very poor cell signal at the campground. A visitor reported only getting "1-2 bars of LTE, no G," suggesting that it is wise to "consider yourself unplugged" during your visit if you rely heavily on cellular data or calls. This could be a significant drawback for those needing to work remotely or stay in constant communication, but a welcome opportunity for others looking to disconnect and fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.
Robert W Craig Campground offers access to a beautiful and clear lake that features a swimming beach and a picnic area, making it a great spot for families and those looking to enjoy water-based activities. There is also an overlook that provides views of the lake and the interesting "Waffle rock," a unique 300-million-year-old geological formation with a fascinating history related to the lake's construction. However, one reviewer noted that they did not find "any path...from the campground to the lake," which could mean a drive or a longer walk along the road might be necessary to access these lakeside amenities.
Finally, it is crucial for those traveling to Robert W Craig Campground, especially in larger RVs or with trailers, to be aware of the road conditions leading to the location. Reviewers caution that the roads "getting from Keyser, WV or Westernport MD are narrow, winding and have steep switchbacks." One reviewer specifically advised against taking the road to or from Keyser with a camper, recommending instead to use Route 46 to and from Westernport, which they found to be a better alternative, although still potentially challenging for big rigs. It's noted that "big rigs can manage them at a low speed," but careful driving and awareness of these conditions are essential for a safe arrival.
Despite the limitations of only having electric hookups, the potentially dated bathhouse facilities, the poor cell signal, and the challenging road access for larger vehicles, Robert W Craig Campground still holds appeal for many due to its well-maintained sites, friendly staff, and access to a beautiful lake and hiking trails. For local users in the "camping near me" category who prioritize paved campsites and a generally peaceful environment and are prepared for the aforementioned considerations, Robert W Craig Campground offers a solid option for a West Virginia camping adventure. Robert W Craig Campground Reviews
I visited Robert Craig Campground in May '23. I had a great experience. The reason for the 4/5 stars is because they only have electric sites. If they had full-hookup I would give them 5/5. The staff is real nice, very well maintained. The store has weird hours but if you need something, a camp host will open the store on off hours. Restrooms and showers are kept clean. If you plan on doing work while visiting, there is very poor cell signal so consider yourself unplugged. The best cell signal was1-2 bars of LTE, no G. I plan on going back myself but without full-hookup I'll be leaving the family at home.

Some are short and some are far from level even though they’re paved. There is one shower house so if you’re in the higher numbered loop you need to walk through the wooded path or around the road. Mostly clean but pretty dated and lack of upkeep in terms of painting etc.the roads getting from Keyser, WV or Westernport MD are narrow, winding and have steep switchbacks. Not big rig friendly but big rigs can manage them at a low speed. I would NOT take the road to or from Keyser with a camper. We did it getting there and then did 46 to amd from Westernport. There are a couple of nice hiking trails. There’s no path, that we found, from the campground to the lake. The lake is beautiful and clear and has a swimming beach, picnic area and overlook with Waffle rock (an interesting 300 million year old unique geological pattern, and lake construction history.
Jun 05, 2021 · Cece & Dave Donovan-GreeneThis is our second campsite. I'm just a beginner camper, but I'm wildly excited. The children didn't want to leave. Every day there was some kind of entertainment for the children. Thank you, we enjoyed it very much.
Jul 11, 2023 · Mary PrasvirynaNice little Army Corps campground. Well kept and it's surprisingly nice for the area. The camp store has very limited hours and you have to travel off the mountain if it's closed, so prepare ahead of time. Short drive to the WV boat launch at Jennings Randolph.
Jul 03, 2024 · Nathan RohrbaughJust finished our trip here and the campsites are really nice. They are clean, shady, and decent size. The restrooms are cleaned periodically but they were very clean. We ran into a few things that were kinda disappointing but mostly because of covid not because of the park. No visitors lake was closed and you have to use their firewood and most of the firewood was damp so it was hard to get a decent fire started. But over all was a nice trip and we will be coming back again! Also the lake picnic area is like a min away driving time and has a amazing view
